The Emoji Movie unlocks the never-before-seen secret world inside your smartphone. Hidden within the messaging app is Textopolis, a bustling city where all your favorite emojis live, hoping to be selected by the phone's user. In this world, each emoji has only one facial expression - except for Gene, an exuberant emoji who was born without a filter and is bursting with multiple expressions. Determined to become "normal" like the other emojis, Gene enlists the help of his handy best friend Hi-5 and the notorious code breaker emoji Jailbreak. Together, they embark on an epic "app-venture" through the apps on the phone, each its own wild and fun world, to find the Code that will fix Gene. But when a greater danger threatens the phone, the fate of all emojis depends on these three unlikely friends who must save their world before it's deleted forever. Written by

In the Latinamerican Spanish version, the name of Jailbreak was changed with the name of "Lady Hacker". See more »
Gene's failed first scan at the beginning of the movie has multiple expressions mixed in a single image, while his second and third scans at the end of the movie result in an animated image.
This is incorrectly regarded as an inconsistency. In the beginning, the scanner is controlled by the "chips", while at the end, the scanner is controlled by Jailbreak, implying that Jailbreak reconfigured the scanner. See more »

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand the Emoji Movie (2017).
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand the Emoji Movie (2017). The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Gene's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike the Emoji Movie (2017). truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Gene's existential catchphrase "My feelings are huge. Maybe I'm meant to have more than just one emotion! I have so much more," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Sony Picture's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂
And yes, by the way, i DO have a the Emoji Movie (2017). tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothing personnel kid 😎
