The Emoji Movie unlocks the never-before-seen secret world inside your smartphone. Hidden within the messaging app is Textopolis, a bustling city where all your favorite emojis live, hoping to be selected by the phone's user. In this world, each emoji has only one facial expression - except for Gene, an exuberant emoji who was born without a filter and is bursting with multiple expressions. Determined to become "normal" like the other emojis, Gene enlists the help of his handy best friend Hi-5 and the notorious code breaker emoji Jailbreak. Together, they embark on an epic "app-venture" through the apps on the phone, each its own wild and fun world, to find the Code that will fix Gene. But when a greater danger threatens the phone, the fate of all emojis depends on these three unlikely friends who must save their world before it's deleted forever. Written by

A week before the film was released, Sony tweeted a controversial promotional picture parodying the Hulu series The Handmaid's Tale (2017). It was immediately met with criticism for being tasteless, considering the content and themes of the Hulu series. Following the backlash, the tweet was deleted. See more »
As the Emojis start chanting Gene's name, Hi-5 begins chanting his own name and making comments. During this, his mouth is never in sync with the words, but rather just opening and closing. See more »

When I traversed in to my divisional troupe. I quaked in anticipation of the monstrosity that plagued my YouTube feed. I lingered in my seat, my heart pounded against my chest, waiting for... the music. The Sony Pictures, I was taken by shock, my 97 year old heart couldn't take such savagery, my wife, god bless her soul didn't even make the first 0.02 seconds. My eyes stuck to the screen, and hell glazed back. An hour an a half later, my wife hanging of her seat, the people around me silent, and I with a smile on my face.
The Emoji movie is a masterpiece and worth, a dead wife. It was so enchanting, the animation makes me glad I survived World War II to see it. The character Gene is brilliantly written, with his great voice acting and motivations in mind. One does truly receive a great connection to the world of the Emojis.
I left that theater happy, dragging my wife behind me, telling her about my favorite's scene, the one where they're on that boat, and she's still silent from the shock of it being so good.
So, what do I rate The Emoji Movie? 10/10 would bang
