Keegan-Michael Key Fulfills a 'Dream Deferred' in 2017 (Exclusive)

Keegan-Michael Key Fulfills a 'Dream Deferred' in 2017 (Exclusive)
There’s no doubting that Keegan-Michael Key is a funny guy, as he’s proven on the Emmy-winning Comedy Central sketch series Key & Peele and with scene-stealing roles in everything from Pitch Perfect 2 to the first season of Fargo on FX.

But after Key & Peele came to an end in 2015, Key says he purposefully sought out work that would take him as far away from the sketch comedy world, which, also thanks to his years on MadTV, had defined much of his career up until that point. “I felt like we had done almost as much as we could do with the form,” he tells Et, and he was ready to set his career on a new course with roles that tapped into his classical training.

The first sign of that transition came in 2016 with Don’t Think Twice, a dramedy about standup comedians, and then a leading role as Ethan on Netflix’s Friends From College. But it was

The Best TV Performances of 2017

The Best TV Performances of 2017
It’s virtually impossible to limit year-end lists to 10 or 20 shows, so it’s literally impossible to include all the great performances from 2017 on one list. But IndieWire has done our best, wading through the hundreds of award-worthy turns from veteran actors and TV newbies to find the best performances this year.

These actors accomplished something special: They elevated their shows even when it seemed like the series couldn’t go any higher. They found surprising depths within the writers’ words and surprised directors with keen insights into their characters. They made us laugh, cry, jump for joy, and scream in frustration. Their precision in understanding who they played helped evoke passion in the audience watching.

We will not soon forget, and if you haven’t yet seen some of these fine thespians go to work, make sure to make the time. There may be a lot of television out there,

Owen Gleiberman’s 10 Best Films of 2017

Owen Gleiberman’s 10 Best Films of 2017
Earlier this year, as winter was doing its slow fade, something happened in the world of movies you don’t see too often: A film arrived out of nowhere to become a fast-break phenomenon, lionized by critics and flocked to by audiences. I’m talking about Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” (#2 on my 10 Best list), which was made on a tiny budget ($4.5 million!) but became, virtually overnight, a seismic pop-cultural event.

For a moment or two, a movie owned not just the multiplexes but the conversation. It was thrilled to, talked about, granted the hot-potato status of a sociological wake-up call. For a moment, the concept of “niche culture” felt like it was being left in the dust. Something similar happened six months later, in the middle of the summer, when Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk” (which didn’t make my list — to me, it was an awesome spectacle but too remote) rode a veritable tidal wave of

Golden Globes Nominations: 21 Biggest Snubs and Surprises

Golden Globes Nominations: 21 Biggest Snubs and Surprises
On Monday morning, the Golden Globes reinforced the notion that Hollywood is still a boy’s club. The organization, made up of about 90 foreign journalists, seemed to go out on a limb not to nominate a single woman for best director. Not Greta Gerwig (“Lady Bird”). Not Patty Jenkins (“Wonder Woman”). Not Dee Rees (“Mudbound”).

Although 2017 has been called the year of the woman, the Globes managed to overlook two of the biggest female-led hits of the year: “Beauty and the Beast,” the most successful movie of 2017 so far, was snubbed in the musical/comedy category, and “Wonder Woman” was shut out for any awards. Other surprises: Jordan Peele didn’t get a nomination for writing or directing “Get Out,” although his movie did receive two nominations (for best picture and actor).

Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water,” a love story between a lonely woman and a monster, led all movies with seven nominations.

Matt Shakman direct The Phantom Tollbooth

Last August it was announced that TriStar Pictures was developing an adaptation of the classic children’s book The Phantom Tollbooth, and now Deadline is reporting that the studio has enlisted Matt Shakman (Game of Thrones, Fargo) to direct the project.

Based on the 1961 book by writer Norton Juster and illustrator Jules Feiffer, The Phantom Tollbooth “tells the story of a bored young boy named Milo who unexpectedly received a magic tollbooth one afternoon and, having nothing better to do, decides to drive through it in his toy car. The tollbooth transports him to a land called the Kingdom of Wisdom, where he acquires two faithful companions, has many adventures, and goes on a quest to rescue the princesses of the kingdom from a castle in the air.”

The Phantom Tollbooth has been scripted by Michael Vukadinovic (Rememory) and Phil Johnston (Wreck-It Ralph 2), and has Donald De Line and Ed McDonnell producing.

Where You've Seen This Actress Before Her Black Mirror Episode

Image Source: Netflix Get ready for a wild ride when Black Mirror returns with its fourth season. One of the best episodes is "USS Callister," a parody of the original Star Trek . . . with a Black Mirror twist, of course. The hero of the piece is a woman named Nanette Cole, who may look like a tiny, wide-eyed ingenue, but is actually a brilliant badass, played by the wonderful Cristin Milioti. The actress is perhaps best known for playing the titular mother on CBS's long-running sitcom How I Met Your Mother. She became so popular with viewers that her storyline was be a big part of why fans were so unhappy with the final season and series finale episode. There's a Familiar Face in This Upcoming Black Mirror Episode

Image Source: Netflix Black Mirror will debut its fourth season shortly on Netflix, and one of the episodes already generating a lot of buzz is "USS Callister." The sci-fi episode pays homage to (or perhaps straight-up parodies) the original Star Trek TV series. Jesse Plemons (Fargo, Friday Night Lights) stars as Captain Daly, doing a solid tribute to William Shatner without going over the top. Daly's right-hand man is Walton, whom TV fans will definitely recognize from a variety of shows. Walton is played by Jimmi Simpson, whose most recent noteworthy credit is Westworld. In case you haven't watched the first season, we won't spoil his storyline for you, but generally he's a first-time visitor to Westworld who gets sucked into the deeper meaning of the park's story. Image Source: HBO Before Westworld, Simpson could be seen as computer hacker Gavin Orsay on Netflix's House of Cards and on A&E's short-lived Prison Break pseudo-spinoff,

David Lynch, Jordan Peele, Tiffany Haddish, and More Creators Tell IndieWire What Drove Them in 2017
Words have always had great power, but over the course of the last year — a one of massive change and upheaval in Hollywood and the rest of the world — that old chestnut has never seemed more prescient. 2017 saw the rise of believing those who speak out, even if it hurts to hear, and plenty of the industry’s biggest voices had plenty to say. We talk to a lot of Hollywood’s brightest talents, about the projects which have inspired them most and the industry which at times supports, and at times hinders, their efforts to make their best work.

As individuals, we’re often blown away by their insights; in gathering them together, we end up with a portrait of a community of artists and creators who love their art and their industry, for better and for worse, and refuse to keep quiet about it.

Golden Globes 2018 TV Predictions: Bold Picks in Every Category

Golden Globes 2018 TV Predictions: Bold Picks in Every Category
Best Drama Series “The Crown” “The Deuce” “The Handmaid’s Tale” “Game of Thrones” “Stranger Things

Spoiler: “This Is Us

Since the above predictions feature three returning series and a virtual lock in “The Handmaid’s Tale,” there’s a lot of room for spoilers. Not only could “This Is Us” very easily land its second straight nod for Best Drama Series, but series like “Mindhunter,” “The Good Doctor,” “Ozark,” “Mr. Robot,” “Better Call Saul,” and, yes, even “The Leftovers” could find their way into the final five. The Golden Globes like spotlighting new series, which benefits shows like “Mindhunter” and “Ozark” which haven’t been crowned by other awards shows just yet. The Globes could be the first, but we’re betting they won’t be able to resist David Simon’s “The Deuce” — given that all-star cast — and last year’s winner, “The Crown.” “Game of Thrones” and

Bleak New Trailer For Black Mirror Season 4 Confirms December Premiere

The fourth season of Black Mirror is only three weeks away.

That’s the news coming out of Netflix this afternoon, after the online giant confirmed that six new episodes – six bleak, technology-driven nightmares – will be available to consume from December 29th. A suitably chilling trailer accompanied today’s media dump (see above), which cuts between each new chapter in Charlie Brooker’s Emmy-winning anthology series.

From the Jodie Foster-directed “Arkangel” to “Metalhead,” the show’s first ever black-and-white episode (see below), Black Mirror season 4 looks set to deliver another dose of unmissable drama. It’s vintage Brooker, too: happiness is fleeting and, supposedly, everything happens for a reason. Other instalments include “Crocodile,” “Hang the DJ,” “Black Museum,” and the Star Trek-inspired “USS Callister,” which stars Jesse Plemons and Jimmi Simpson of Fargo and Westworld, respectively.

At the top, Jodie Foster’s “Arkangel” looks to examine the repercussions
