‘Dangal’ Review: Aamir Khan’s Bollywood Wrestling Drama Is a Christmas Treat — Until It Isn’t

‘Dangal’ Review: Aamir Khan’s Bollywood Wrestling Drama Is a Christmas Treat — Until It Isn’t
Dangal” is Disney India’s big Christmas bet, and the Aamir Khan wrestling drama starts strong. The characters are sketched with the kind of patience that can only come from a place of confidence. There are enough crowd-pleasing moments to fill an entire summer blockbuster. The soundtrack is brash and exhilarating; the songs here will dominate many workout playlists in the new year. The social commentary is not subtle, but it is forthright and consistent.

What a shame about that second half. It is rare that a film manages to undo so much of its groundwork so thoroughly in so short a span of time. The creative decisions made here amount to self-sabotage.

Aamir Khan in ‘Dangal’: How a Major Bollywood Star Uses Cinema to Raise Awareness
Call Aamir Khan a perfectionist, and he’ll lightheartedly brush off the label, preferring to describe himself as simply “passionate” instead. Terminology aside, a mere glance at his 28-year career is ample proof that for Khan, going the extra mile is practically the equivalent of slacking off—the 51-year-old actor, producer, and director usually travels another 10 for good measure.

He did it in 1998’s “Ghulam,” when he turned down a body double or special effects in favor of sprinting towards an oncoming train for a stunt, avoiding it by a mere second and gambling his life for the sake of realism.

In 1999, when a script about 19th century villagers protesting British land tax with a game of cricket was dismissed by every financier in Bollywood, Khan took on his first producing role alongside his acting credit to make the film. Three years of grueling production later, “Lagaan” became the third

At the Ram Nath Goenka Awards for excellence in Journalism in India, organized by the Indian Express Group today evening, Aamir Khan broke his silence on the intolerance debate in India by making a startling disclosure that his wife Kiran Rao had asked him recently that the family should move out of India because of the "insecure environment" in the country. "For the first time Kiran has spoken about moving out of the country. She fears for her child. That is a disastrous and a big statement for Kiran to make to me. She feels scared to open the newspapers everyday. That does indicate there's a growing despondency apart from alarm. You feel depressed, low, why is this happening. That does exist in me," Aamir stated. "India's social fabric is not at its best right now. I am certainly alarmed. I feel there is a sense of insecurity, fear. It

Bollywood Star Aamir Khan Uses Celebrity to Shed Light on Social Issues
Movie stars often aren’t shy when it comes to using their clout to help shed light on worthy causes, but few have the platform of Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, whose weekly talkshow “Satyamev Jayate” (Truth Alone Prevails) recently completed its third season on 21st Century Fox’s Star India network and Indian national broadcaster Doordarshan.

Khan, the star of “Dhoom: 3,” India’s all-time highest box office earner, at $88 million, also starred in “3 Idiots,” the locally produced B.O. champ that “Dhoom: 3” toppled, and was the star and producer of 2001’s “Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India,” which earned India’s last Oscar nomination in the foreign-language category. All three films were hits in China and Japan — non-traditional markets for Indian cinema.

On his TV show, Khan focuses on social issues like domestic violence, “honor” killings, sexual abuse and female feticide in a nation in which corruption and superstitious practices are endemic.
