David Lyle, Former Head of Nat Geo and Fremantle, Dies at 67
David Lyle, former head of National Geographic Channels and FremantleMedia North America, died Thursday at 67 after battling cancer. His passing was confirmed by Propagate Content co-ceo Howard Owens, who worked with Lyle at NatGeo. Lyle was the first president of entertainment of Fremantle USA, and his successes there included the launch of “American Idol” on Fox. David Lyle, Veteran Executive and Reality TV Champion, Dies at 67
David Lyle, a TV veteran who championed unscripted TV and headed National Geographic Channels and Fox Reality Channel, died Thursday at his home in Los Angeles after a long battle with cancer. He was 67.

After working in TV in Australia and in London, Lyle came to Los Angeles in 2001 as head of FremantleMedia North America where he helped launch “American Idol” on Fox. He most recently served as president of Pact US, an advocacy org for unscripted TV producers.

Earlier this year, Lyle helped steer the merger of Pact US with the rival Nonfiction Producers Association, creating Npact. The organization reps most of the largest unscripted TV production companies.

Wicked Tuna Season 6: New Competition Comes Aboard

Gloucester’s famed blue-fin tuna fishermen are going to be on full display again as season 6 of National Geographic’s Wicked Tuna kicks off again. Last season Captain Dave Carraro of the Fv-Tuna.com won the competition with a total catch value of $104,785. Just $174 behind was Capt. Paul Hebert, also of Gloucester, who at one time was part of Carraro’s crew. “Spartacus” alum Nick Tarabay has been cast in Season 2 of Syfy’s “The Expanse.” Plus, the cast of “Happy Days” will guest star on Nickelodeon’s “SpongeBob Squarepants.”

“Spartacus” alum Nick Tarabay has been cast in Syfy’s “The Expanse” for Season 2, Variety has exclusively learned.

Tarabay joins the series in a major recurring role and will appear in at least eight episodes. He will play Coyter, a former spy now working in the private sector who is approaed by Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo) about working undercover for her.

Aside from Starz’s “Spartacus,” in which he starred as Ashur, Tarabay’s credits include “Castle,” “Longmire,” “Person of Interest,” “Arrow” and “Star Trek Into Darkness.” He is repped by Abrams Artist Agency.
