Content Media hires Tom Butterfield

Content Media has hired the producer and 2015 Screen Future Leader as head of production at its film division.

Butterfield will report to Content’s president of film Jamie Carmichael and assumes immediate oversight of the present and future slate.

He will also be responsible for expanding national and international partnerships with key talent, producers, agents and publishers and identifying new opportunities for film collaborations.

“Tom brings a wealth of production experience along with many strong industry relationships, from both London and Los Angeles that aligns perfectly with our growing trans-continental business,” said Carmichael.

Butterfield added: “I’m really excited to be joining the Content Team at this exciting time for the company, and I’m looking forward to working with them to expand the film slate.”

Prior to joining Content Butterfield founded and ran Culmination Productions where he produced “Life At These Speeds and London Town. Before that he worked for Zide/Perry Productions in Los Angeles

Content boards John Hawkes noir 'Too Late'

Content Media has acquired international sales to Dennis Hauck’s neo-noir detective thriller and will host a private buyers screening in Toronto.

John Hawkes stars alongside Crystal Reed, Dichen Lachman, Natalie Zea, Jeff Fahey and Robert Forster in the non-linear story in the vein of Pulp Fiction, Short Cuts and Memento about a private eye on a perilous missing persons case.

Too Late premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival earlier in the summer.

Too Late is a cinephile gold dream, with stunning 35mm cinematography, white hot dialogue and a masterful performance from Academy Award nominee John Hawkes,” said Content’s president of film Jamie Carmichael.

“Add to that the smoky clubs, glamorous mansions, scenic vistas and retro-cool drive-in theatres that make Los Angeles iconic and you have a unique, ultra-hip noir thriller to die for.”

Casting: Han, Bishe, Rodriguez, Holt, Roth

Independence Day 2

Chin Han ("The Dark Knight") has joined the cast of the "Independence Day" sequel shooting in New Mexico. The film's director Roland Emmerich announced the news through his Twitter account.

Han previously worked with Emmerich on "2012" and here will play the leader of the Chinese Space Squadron. The film is due for release June 24th 2016. [Source: Twitter]

Rupture

Kerry Bishe, Peter Stormare, Lesley Manville and Ari Millen have joined the cast of sci-fi adventure thriller "Rupture" alongside Noomi Rapace and Michael Chiklis. Filming began Tuesday in Toronto.

Bruce Campbell and James Frecheville have joined the cast of Marc Forby's road comedy "Highly Functional" with filming about to take place in New Mexico and Canada over the next month. Tom Dibble penned the script.

AFM: Graham Rogers Starring in Drama ‘Life at These Speeds’
Graham Rogers has landed the lead in Content’s romantic drama “Life at These Speeds,” joining Douglas Booth, Billy Crudup, AnnaSophia Robb and Sam Rockwell.

Life at These Speeds” is set to shoot later this fall with Leif Tilden directing from Mark Novak’s script. Content came on to the project at Cannes and has been selling international markets at Afm.

Rogers will portray a young man who — after his best friends die in a tragic accident — finds that running allows him to remember them perfectly. He soon finds himself caught between keeping the past alive and making new memories in the present.

Producers are Tom Butterfield (“The Trust”) and Scott Alvarez (“Down for Life”).

Rogers’ credits include “Love And Mercy,” “Struck By Lightning” and “Crazy Kind Of Love.” He also starred in the first season of NBC’s “Revolution.”

Content Media has bulked up its Afm slate with international rights to the rom-com starring Emmy Rossum and Justin Long.

IFC Films has acquired North American rights and set a December release on the time-hopping tale about a seemingly odd couple who meet at the Hollywood Cemetery during a meteor shower. Eric Winter also stars.

“I fell in love with Comet when I read the script many months ago, and it has lived up to its ambitious expectations,” said Content Media president of film Jamie Carmichael.

“The film has a unique quality – it’s funny, emotional and very beautiful – and wonderfully clever too. It will have couples of all ages talking about Emmy and Justin long into the night!”

“With his feature film debut, Sam Esmail has created a romance for the ages,” said Jonathan Sehring, president of Sundance Selects/IFC Films. “Emmy and Justin shine in this chronicle of a star-crossed relationship.”

IFC Midnight enters Dark Summer
IFC Midnight has acquired North American rights to the supernatural horror film that Content Media will introduce to international buyers at the Afm.

Dark Summer is a stylised contemporary ghost story about a home-alone teenager on house arrest who experiences a terrifying presence. Keir Gilchrist stars with Stella Maeve, Grace Phipps, Maestro Harrell and Peter Stormare.

Paul Solet directed for Preferred Film & TV (Pft) from a screenplay by Mike Le. Pft’s Ross M Dinerstein produced and Content’s Jamie Carmichael is the executive producer.

The distributor has set the multi-platform release for January 9, 2015, after brokering the deal with Preferred Content and Content Media.

“IFC Midnight truly excels in the elevated genre space and has been a great North American home for the Pact franchise – so we’re very happy to have them as partners on Dark Summer,” said Carmichael.

Exclusive: The company has reported a strong response following Toronto to its sci-fi thriller starring Caity Lotz, Brandon Routh, Dane Cook and Ben Feldman.

Deals have closed with Splendid Film in Germany, Benelux and Scandinavia, New Select in Japan and Transmission Films in Australia/New Zealand.

Content screened first footage in Toronto to the thriller from New Artists Alliance and North American distributor XLrator Media.

Matt Osterman directs from his screenplay about four astronauts who agree to take part in a simulated mission that may not be all that it seems.

Gabriel Cowan and John Suits of New Artists Alliance produce 400 Days, which is in post-production.
