‘Flatliners’ Review

Stars: Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton, Kiersey Clemons, Kiefer Sutherland | Written by Ben Ripley | Directed by Niels Arden Oplev

Danish director Niels Arden Oplev is still best known for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (what, you mean you don’t remember Dead Man Down?), and he brings the same flat, TV movie aesthetic to this “sequel” to Joel Schumacher’s 1990 sci-horror. The original’s high concept plot is retained and given a 21st century makeover – although it’s still as hokey and dumb as Schumacher’s film, and once again fails to capitalise on its central conceit.

The premise of Flatliners is that a young med student, Courtney (Ellen Page), comes up with the bright idea of having her heart stopped, then started again, under controlled conditions. She employs the help of a group of fellow students, who see the experiment as a shortcut to bountiful medical careers.

The Preview Reel: American Made & Flatliners

Welcome to the “Preview Reel” column, where we look at the week’s upcoming wide-release movies. Last weekend’s box office was lower than expected with Kingsman: The Golden Circle failing to hit $40 million, The Lego Ninjago Movie barely earning $20 million, and Friend Request recording the worst wide opening of all-time with a mere $2 million across 2,500 screens. This week, Kingsman will be doing battle with the new Tom Cruise vehicle, American Made, while the Flatliners remake will most likely be dead on arrival. But will either movie be good? Let’s find out.

American Made

What we are excited about: The last time Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman teamed up was for Edge of Tomorrow (or Live. Die. Repeat. whichever stupid title you prefer) in 2014, and while American Made is a completely different movie, we’re excited for their next collaboration. Liman is known for his fast and loose

Flatliners Trailer Looks Awfully Cool, Still About Same Goofy Idea

27 years ago a bunch of big names got together with Joel Schumacher and made a fairly standard “vacation” movie. It was a screwball idea, but it was entertaining enough.

For reasons no one can fathom, apart from some need to remake everything, we’re jumping into this well again, and while it looks really fantastic, that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a pretty goofball premise that no one was exactly looking to revisit. It looks fantastic in large part because it’s directed by Niels Arden Oplev. Rarely has there been a director that has managed to leave people scratching their heads so much over nearly a decade. Rocketing onto the scene (the American scene anyway) with 2009’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Niels then followed with the lackluster Dead Man Down, a pretty cool foreign film, Speed Walking, a few episodes of television, and now a remake of a 1990 cornball,

Live, Die, and Repeat in the First Trailer for ‘Flatliners’ Remake

In a post-Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping world, the concept of Flatliners loses a bit of its edge after viewing Bill Hader’s one-off scene, but nonetheless a remake will arrive this fall. Starring Ellen Page, Nina Dobrev, Diego Luna, James Norton, and Kiersey Clemons, the first trailer has landed, which followed a group of medical students who experiment with dying, then coming back to life.

“We viewed the original movie as a jumping-off point – and are now telling a re-imagined story with new characters,” producer Michael Douglas tells Fandango, who debuted the trailer. “We have learned more and more about the world, and science keeps answering so many questions and taking us to so many previously unexplored places – but still no one knows what happens after we die. That’s a question we’ll be asking ourselves forever.”

First ‘Flatliners’ Trailer Pulses To Life With Ellen Page & Diego Luna

Since directing the immensely popular “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” in 2009, director Niels Arden Oplev hasn’t been hitting the big screen that much aside from the largely panned “Dead Man Down.” Instead, he’s been cutting his teeth across the television landscape with popular series’ such as “Mr. Robot” and genre fare like “Under the Dome.” That’s about to change with his latest film “Flatliners,” a somewhat odd choice for his first film since 2013 but one that he’s acquired quite a cast for.

Flatliners Remake Is Ready for Reshoots

Flatliners Remake Is Ready for Reshoots
Back in November, Sony Pictures made a numberof changes to their upcoming release schedule, including a shift of their Flatliners remake release date, pushing it from the summer slot of August 18 to September 29. As it turns out, there was a good reason for that shift, with director Niels Arden Oplev assembling his cast once again for reshoots, which will take place in Toronto next month. If the studio would have kept the old release date, it would have been cutting it too close for comfort.

Iatse 873, the local Toronto chapter of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees union, revealed on their website that Flatliners reshoots have been scheduled in Toronto for eight days, spanning July 24 to August 1. If Sony would have kept the August 18 release intact, the production would have certainly been rushing to get this new footage into the movie in just a few short weeks. Still, even with the release date delay,

Flatliners Remake Brings Back Original Star Kiefer Sutherland

Flatliners Remake Brings Back Original Star Kiefer Sutherland
Back in March, we reported that a reboot of the 1990 sci-fi thriller Flatliners is gearing up to start filming this summer, with Ellen Page, Diego Luna and Nina Dobrev attached to star. It was never clear if the filmmakers had planned on reaching out to original cast members such as Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts and Kevin Bacon, but today we have word that Kiefer Sutherland is closing his deal to co-star in the rebooted thriller. The deal isn't finalized yet, but the actor has committed to the project.

The original film followed a group of medical students and close friends who conduct experiments with near death experiences. Each one of them has their heart stopped before being revived instantly, which causes them to experience nightmarish visions of their childhood, reflecting either sins they have committed, or sins committed against them. Their unorthodox extracurricular studies have very dark consequences, as their supernatural visions begin to intensify.

As of right now, the actor is the only original star returning; Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Billy Baldwin and Oliver Platt aren’t currently involved. “Flatliners” starred the quintet as a group of medical students who, not unlike kids today playing the knockout game, purposefully stop their own hearts in order to trigger near-death experiences. As you might imagine, this doesn’t end up being the best idea.

Wade Barrett Quitting WWE To Become A Soccer Analyst? / wikipedia

Wade Barrett’s reason for leaving WWE could be to pursue a career in soccer punditry. Dave Meltzer notes in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter “I do know that Barrett had been interested in being a soccer analyst in the U.K. after his wrestling days were over.”

As a passionate Preston North End fan, and having grown up in the same region as massive clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United, Barrett is very knowledgeable on all things soccer. While punditry jobs are filled with big names in the UK, he could perhaps have a career talking about soccer on the major Us networks. He’s a confident speaker and there’s no reason why he shouldn’t make a go for it if he has the ambition.

He’s also a big Rugby Union fan, which could be another avenue of sports analysis for him to work in.

'Flatliners' Remake Is Happening with Ellen Page

'Flatliners' Remake Is Happening with Ellen Page
Not having quite plundered all of the 80s for every possible remake, Hollywood is now starting to eviscerate the 90s. The latest quasi-classic to get the reboot treatment is Flatliners, which came out just on the cusp of the 1990's emerging into their own as a viable landscape for cinema. The original film contains elements from both eras, making it unique in the sci-fi horror genre. At this time, it's not known how the storyline will be skewered or altered, if at all.

Ellen Page is in talks to headline this version of Flatliners. It isn't known if she will play the role of Dr. Rachel Mannus, originated by Julia Roberts. It's possible that this version could introduce a whole new set of characters. The rest of the ensemble cast from the original included some heavy hitters from that time period, including Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin and Oliver Platt.

Ellen Page In Talks For Flatliners Reboot

Ellen Page In Talks For Flatliners Reboot
As the X-movies’ Kitty Pride, Ellen Page can run through walls and send others’ consciousness through time. Now, it appears she’s ready to dabble in the afterlife, as the actress is in talks to star in the long-developing reboot of 1990s sci-fi thriller Flatliners. If you're unfamiliar with the original, it starred Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin and Oliver Platt, and involved medical students causing themselves all kinds of surreal mental anguish with their ill-advised near-death experiments. Source Code’s Ben Ripley has written the most recent draft of the script, which will likely update the story to include more modern science. And probably less neon, but then the original was a Joel Schumacher film. Dead Man Down’s Niels Arden Oplev was attached to direct in 2013, and Sony has been trying to bring this one to life since at least 2011. It appears to be in a state of limbo,

Colin Farrell Knows Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them

Colin Farrell’s a great actor, but he’s kind of box-office poison.

Just look at this track record.

Total Recall? Bombed.

Fright Night? Nobody bothered.

Dead Man Down? Yup, I don’t really remember that either.

In fact, aside from his hysterical supporting turn in 2011’s Horrible Bosses, S.W.A.T was the actor’s last legitimate hit. That came out in 2003. Granted, since Miami Vice 9 years ago, he’s not been making particularly commercial choices, but for a man still considered an A-lister that reads pretty alarmingly.

Well that’s likely to change with the news he’s been cast in Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Directed by David Yates and written by original novelist J.K Rowling, Farrell has landed a major role alongside Eddie Redmayne and Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice).

Farrell will play Graves, a wizarding accomplice of Redmayne’s protagonist,
