Exclusive: How ‘Underground’ Is Making History by Telling Harriet Tubman’s Story on Screen

Exclusive: How ‘Underground’ Is Making History by Telling Harriet Tubman’s Story on Screen
When Underground returns to Wgn America for season two on Wednesday, March 8, it’ll make history by presenting Harriet Tubman’s narrative onscreen for the first time since 1978, when Cicely Tyson played the abolitionist on the TV miniseries A Woman Called Moses. In the 39 years since, there’s been little of Tubman’s vast story -- from her escape from slavery to the Underground Railroad to her role as spy and military leader during the Civil War and, later, a suffragette -- presented, unless one counts her brief appearance on an episode of NBC's 1982 time-traveling series Voyagers! or in 2012’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which even the film’s screenwriter, Seth Grahame-Smith, admitted was “sad.”

In fact, several versions of Abraham Lincoln’s story have appeared on TV and in theaters since 1978, with Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln earning Daniel Day-Lewis the 2013 Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of the president. Even [link=nm

This November, we'll be meeting a whole new cast of characters from the mind of J.K. Rowling when Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them hits Cineplex theatres on November 18th. When Harry Potter first came out, the films didn't just give us Harry, Ron and Hermione, but also Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson.

While some of the members of this new cast are familiar faces, for many of them this is the biggest project they've yet to be a part of, and the film is bound to introduce these actors to a whole new audience. We're taking a closer look at the cast, one by one.

The Academy has invited 683 new members to join their ranks

Yesterday afternoon, the ranks of Oscar voters grew substantially, with some welcome diversity added in for good measure. Yes, the Academy sent out invitations for new membership about 24 hours ago, with 683 names getting the coveted tap on the proverbial shoulder. Again, what made it so interesting to note is that AMPAS seemed to actively seek out women, minorities, and younger artists, hoping to make the demographics of the Academy slightly less centered on older white males. It won’t suddenly change the makeup of the Oscar nominations or upend how the Academy Awards go down next year, but it’s a slow step in the right direction, and that’s worth applauding for sure. As you can see below, in addition to basically all of last year’s Oscar winners, the new members are a diverse slate. Among the names you’ll see in the acting branch now are John Boyega,

Bishop Td Jakes Marks 20 Years of Heavenly Content

Bishop Td Jakes Marks 20 Years of Heavenly Content
T.D. Jakes is a man with friends in high places. So high, in fact, that President Obama told Variety, “I am fortunate to count myself among the countless Americans whose lives have been touched by the ministry of Bishop T.D. Jakes.” The president said Jakes has made us “better as individuals” and “more compassionate, and more loving as a country.”

It is those kind of key relationships with the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Tyler Perry, Will Smith and Kerry Washington that have turned this preacher from Dallas into a $400 billion media juggernaut. When he isn’t wearing his “bishop” hat, Jakes makes time to serve in a completely separate capacity as CEO of Tdj Enterprises, a for-profit company in its 20th year. “Our company has actually existed longer than the Potter’s House (his church),” Jakes says. “Before I was nationally known, I was leading an enterprise.”

Amy Pascal’s Hits & Misses at the Box Office

Amy Pascal’s Hits & Misses at the Box Office
The news of the end of Amy Pascal’s tenure as head of Sony Pictures Entertainment begs an examination of the studio’s performance under her leadership.

Pascal, who will remain at Sony in a new role as a producer, has long been known around town for her keen eye for winning projects. Though her reputation has suffered recently as a result of North Korea’s infamous hacking attack on the studio, which revealed a few unseemly email exchanges in which Pascal and other execs criticized the attitudes of A-listers and made racially tinged jokes at the expense of President Obama, Pascal steered the studio through her share of triumphs.

Any career as long as Pascal’s is bound to have its peaks and valleys. From the highest heights (“Skyfall,” “Spider-Man 2”) to the lowest lows (“Jack and Jill,” “Sparkle”), Pascal led Sony through it all. Here’s a look

Film Review: ‘Left Behind’

Film Review: ‘Left Behind’
In what was surely a first in the annals of motion-picture marketing, an early ad for “Left Behind” featured a quote taken not from a film critic, but rather from Satan himself, who allegedly quipped, “Please do not bring unbelievers to this movie.” This presents a rare scenario in which Christian moviegoers ought to feel perfectly secure heeding the advice of the Devil, as this faith-based thriller is likely to inspire far more dorm-room drinking games than religious conversions. With a “Sharknado”-inspired visual style and a deeply weary lead performance from Nicolas Cage, “Left Behind” is cheap-looking, overwrought kitsch of the most unintentionally hilarious order, its eschatological bent representing its only real shot at box office redemption. The film hits theaters this weekend, but as for when believers can expect to see the tenets of their faith reflected with any sort of sophistication or intelligence in a mainstream genre film,
