Ministry Intervention Tips Goa Film Festival Into Chaos

The upcoming edition of the International Film Festival of India (Iffi), in Goa, is has been tipped into chaos following the withdrawal of two films from the Indian Panorama section on the orders of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting.

Filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh (“Kahaani”), the head selectors (referred to as jurors) for the Indian Panorama section, has resigned in protest. He was followed by fellow jurors, editor and screenwriter Apurva Asrani (“Aligarh”) and Gyan Correa, director of 2015 Oscar contender, “The Good Road”). The powerful Marathi film lobby is considering boycotting the festival unless one of the films, “Nude,” is reinstated.

“Nude”, a sensitive portrayal of a woman who poses for painting students, directed by Ravi Jadhav, was due to open the strand. Sanal Kumar Sasidharan’s Malayalam-language “Sexy Durga” has won a host of international awards, including the Hivos Tiger for best film at Rotterdam. Busan: Kross Pictures Finds Fertile Ground in India-Korea Remakes

Busan: Kross Pictures Finds Fertile Ground in India-Korea Remakes
For years, South Korea’s high-concept feature movies, including prominent titles such as “Oldboy,” have been ripped off, plagiarized and blatantly copied by some companies in India.

Now, Korean producer and packaging company Kross Pictures is busily turning Korean films and intellectual property into a viable business in India.

Headed by Thomas Kim Hyunwoo, a former investment banker and L.A.-based Disney executive, Kross last year produced Amitabh Bachchan-vehicle “Te3n” as an authorized remake of 2013 Korean crime drama “Montage.” It now has 10 other Korea-to-India projects at different stages of development.

“Our model is about obtaining and controlling established IP, with a view to packaging it for film and TV,” said Kim, speaking at the Busan Film Festival’s Asian Film Market. China and Vietnam are among the other markets Kross is targeting, though India is arguably the most promising. “We see many commonalities along with the cultural differences.”

Mutual back-scratching and back-biting go hand in hand in Tollywood: Parambrata Chatterjee

He used to be the blue-eyed boy of almost every urban filmmaker, but seems to have lost the hot seat to some of his contemporaries. Now, after bagging the most coveted copyright in the Bengali film industry, Parambrata Chatterjee is back in business with Feluda. In a freewheeling chat with us, the actor-director-producer spoke about his journey from Topshe to Feluda, the copyright tiff with Sandip Ray and things that he no longer finds interesting in Tollywood. Excerpts: Anukul has released and everybody is praising your work… I was waiting to work with Sujoyda (Ghosh) again. In the five years since Kahaani, we’ve planned so many things — some never happened, some will happen in the coming years. But this came as a sudden opportunity and we pounced on it. Now that it’s receiving so much appreciation, I feel ratified and satisfied to the hilt. In Tollywood, nobody rubs anybody the wrong way.

Shortly after completing the shoot of Tumhari Sulu, Neha Dhupia, who plays Maria, Sulu’s radio boss, invited her co-star and new friend, Vidya Balan on her much – discussed celebrity show, “No Filter Neha”.

The conversation between the two was as fun, no-holds barred and uncensored as it could get.

When asked if a “shaadi” had any “side effects”, Vidya said, “I don’t think I’ve experienced any. My name did not change. I didn’t let it. My address changed, for the better. I’d never lived with anyone before so I wondered how it would be to share the same space, but we’re quite alike, so it’s fun.”

Years back, when Vidya had No One Killed Jessica, The Dirty Picture and Kahaani, she was called a Khan. She laughed, “At a press conference after The Dirty Picture Ekta (Kapoor) called me Vidya Balan Khan and that became a thing.

The case study of Vidya Balan and Indian Female Stardom

Vidya Balan is anything but conventional, shattering glass ceilings and breaking stereotypes – She was the first female star from Bollywood to proudly shoulder a woman-centric film and rewrote history with the blockbuster The Dirty Picture.

Having headlined several game changing films for women stars in movies including Ishqya and the Kahaani franchise , the actress who has dared to be different and stuck to her roots, has always been a favorite while studying how the Contemporary Female Star in Bollywood has shaped aspirations for the New Indian Woman.

Tupur Chatterjee of the University of Texas at Austin Department of Radio-Television-Film, United States recently wrote a piece addressing the subject as part of Synoptique, a special selection of texts that addressed questions of “national” Indian cinema within the context of art film circuits and transnational/national/regional film industries, celebrated film cultures and the (re) discovery of forgotten ones.
