Phares et Balises Ramps Up TV Drama Production, Expands Into Film (Exclusive)

Phares et Balises, one of France’s top documentary production banners, is expanding its slate of high-profile drama series and moving into feature films.

The Paris-based company, launched 25 years ago by Jean Labib, has partnered up with Alvaro Longoria (“Everybody Knows”) of Spain’s Morena Films and Laura Bickford (“Traffic”) in the U.S. to develop the feature film “The Man Who Loved Dogs,” which “Narcos” helmer Jose Padilha is attached to direct. The English-language project, adapted from Leonardo Padura’s novel, is a multilayered political thriller revolving around the encounter between a struggling Cuban writer and an exiled Spaniard who turns out to be the man who assassinated Leon Trotsky in Mexico City in 1940.

Phares et Balises has also recently hired French veteran producer Marco Cherqui, whose credits include Jacques Audiard’s “A Prophet.” Cherqui is currently developing a roster of ambitious drama series, notably Rebecca Zlotowski’s “Les Sauvages” and Jean-Marc Rudnicki’s “After the Crash

Sleepless review: Dir. Baran bo Odar (2017)

Sleepless review: Jamie Foxx is in full-on action mode for the massively unbelievable action movie.

Sleepless review by Paul Heath.

Jamie Foxx leads this mindless action thriller, a remake of the 2011 film Nuit Blanche from French director Frédéric Jardin. Foxx plays the role of Vincent Downs, an undercover police officer caught in a web of dodgy cops, murdering gangsters and hardened drug dealers.

The setting is present-day Las Vegas, and Downs is introduced to us by way of a high-octane opening street chase through the streets of downtown Sin City. We see him teamed with partner Sean (rapper turned actor Tip ‘T.I.’ Harris) apparently getting away with a ton of cocaine which, unfortunately, has been lifted from casino boss Rubino (Dermot Mulroney), who has already promised it to a drug kingpin named Novak (Scoot McNairy). Now, Novak is a nasty piece of work and the last person in the world you want to screw with,

Review: ‘Sleepless’ is a Generic Thriller That Runs on Auto-Pilot

If Sleepless doesn’t seem like it is doing anything new it’s, well, not. A remake of Frederic Jardin’s 2011 thriller Nuit blanche (Sleepless Night) rebooted as a low-rent Luc Besson-style affair with half the wit, Sleepless isn’t an unbearable experience. It’s just not a terribly original film, one that seems to suffer a fate like many Hollywood-ized imports taken on by foreign directors: they bring all the style, but leave behind the substance and wit. As often happens, something is lost in translation, even if the absurd hand-to-hand combat and action “thrills” in a contained setting remain intact.

Swedish director Baran bo Odar helms from a script by Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton) that, truth be told, could have been adapted into a tense little thriller in the right hands. One sequence involving a stabbing had me nostalgic for Park Chan-wook and what he might have brought to the table.

Jamie Foxx Grills Michelle Monaghan in First Sleepless Clip

Jamie Foxx Grills Michelle Monaghan in First Sleepless Clip
When you're an undercover cop in Las Vegas, you don't compare resumes, you compare battle wounds. Open Road Films has released a new clip from their upcoming crime thriller Sleepless, which shows a pointed conversation between Las Vegas undercover cop Vincent Downs (Jamie Foxx) and internal affairs investigator Jennifer Bryant (Michelle Monaghan), which doesn't exactly get off on the right foot. After refusing to shake Vincent's hand, after he surprisingly shows up at a crime scene, both Vincent and Jennifer show off their scars.

Sleepless is actually Open Road Films' remake of the 2011 French thriller Nuit Blanche, which starred Lizzie Brochere and Pom Klementieff (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2). This action-thriller was supposed to hit theaters on February 24, 2017, putting it up against Lionsgate's animated movie Rock Dog and Blumhouse's thriller Get Out. However, it was recently pushed up to January 13, where it will face Paramount's Monster Trucks and Stx Entertainment's The Bye Bye Man.

The Cop Runneth Over…Kamal Haasan’s Thriller Is A Whammy – Subhash K Jha reviews Thoonga Vanam (in Tamil)

Starring Kamal Haasan, Trisha, Prakash Raj

Directed by Rajesh M Selva

The Tamil can do it better than the French. At least, this time. The redoubtable famished-to-the-finish actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan’s insatiable hunger for new challenges now leads him into sin.

Kamal Haasan plays a grey, eminently corruptible cop who lands up in a mess when he tries to outsmart some very dangerous drug dealers who retaliate by kidnapping the cop’s young son. Interestingly the little kidnapped boy looks more bored as a hostage than frightened, probably because the boy knows if you have Kamal Haasan as a father there’s no way the baddies would beat you.

Not by a long shot.

Or maybe the boy has watched the French film Nuit Blanche while Dad’s been cruising the crime beat. We are told, in fleeting moments of domestic revelation, that the cop-hero Diwakar has not been a good husband (to Asha Sarath,

TwitchFilm Presents: 101 Zombie Kills

Pulled out of the dark, rotting bowels of the internet, TwitchFilm proudly presents this extended narrative of undead carnage, 101 Zombie Kills, or in its far more elegant sounding French moniker, Cent Une Tueries de Zombies. Produced by film archivist and Tiff programmer Colin Geddes and directed/edited by Michael Lane for Toronto's Nuit Blanche in 2012, the montage brings together some of the greatest moments in the ever growing catalog of zombie carnage. Beyond a few festival appearances, this has not been seen by many until now. (And arrives just in time for Halloween.)Far more than just another YouTube 'super-cut', Lane (who also put together The Unauthorized Hagiography of Vincent Price) quickly establishes a story-telling rhythm, dividing the 40+ minutes of zombie mayhem into into escalating...

Jamie Foxx Enters The Race For Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver

Jamie Foxx has been curiously absent from the big screen following a turn in last year’s musical Annie. The Oscar-winner could be playing it safe though, after a string of roles in underperforming sequels like The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Rio 2, and Horrible Bosses 2. Choosing to be selective over his upcoming projects during that period out of the spotlight, Foxx has zoned in on a potential return to his former glory, as Deadline reports that he’s currently engaged in talks to co-star in Baby Driver.

Written and directed by Edgar Wright, Ansel Elgort scored the titular role a while back as a music-obsessed getaway driver who assists a criminal kingpin on snatch-and-grab missions. If you hadn’t guessed, Foxx’s people are working to land him the role of Elgort’s mentor who encourages him to risk his life out on the streets. Together with Lily James

Gabrielle Union Ready For A Sleepless Night

Gabrielle Union Ready For A Sleepless Night
We learned in February that Jamie Foxx had taken the lead role in a new thriller called Sleepless Night. Gabrielle Union has now joined him in the film. Swiss director Baran bo Odar is aboard to make the movie, with Andrea Berloff adapting the 2011 French thriller Nuit Blanche for American audiences. Foxx is set to play a cop with connections to the criminal underworld that finds his family – specifically his son – in danger when he double-crosses some very bad people. The title refers to him scouring a nightclub and, presumably some of a city, to find his kidnapped child. Union is set as his ex-wife, who will have to help him if they’re to save the boy from the gangsters’ clutches. It’s not her only film scheduled for this year: the actress has also landed a main role in Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele’s film Keanu. The

CBC’s Dragons’ Den Adds Joe Fresh Founder Joe Mimran

It’s going to be a very different season when CBC‘s Dragons’ Den returns, and adding to the new mix is Joe Fresh founder Joe Mimran.

Fresh off the news that he is stepping down from Joe Fresh, the Dragons’ Den gets a new Dragon, and one that is sure to be an interesting addition.

The show, which for my money has more interesting pitches than Shark Tank, will be starting its 10th season, and with news that Arlene Dickinson won’t be returning, needed a Dragon that can keep hold of the show’s broad base.

The show returns in the fall. Catch all the info below.
