Review: Tina Fey anchors 'Whiskey Tango Foxtrot' with intelligence and charm

Review: Tina Fey anchors 'Whiskey Tango Foxtrot' with intelligence and charm
I'm not sure Tina Fey was meant to be a movie star. She is, no question about it, a dazzling wit, and I think she can be very funny onstage as well. So far, though, Hollywood has not figured out what to do with Fey as a leading actress because she simply doesn't fit the cookie-cutter archetypes that so many actresses are forced to play, and it's left her in a weird place as an actress. She's obviously talented, but who's writing the roles that she could play? As it turns out, all it takes are directors like Glenn Ficarra and John Requa and a writer like Robert Carlock, who worked with Fey on 30 Rock and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. I like Ficarra and Requa. I don't think every film they've made is great, but they have a good eye for both character and detail. My favorite film of theirs is still I Love You,

Catch the First Trailer for Netflix's New 'Pee-wee's Big Holiday' Movie

"Didn't you ever wonder what life is like outside Fairville?" "Nope. You know I don't want to go anywhere, or try anything new!" Netflix has debuted the first trailer for the return of Pee-wee Herman, played by Paul Reubens, titled Pee-wee's Big Holiday. This is the first real Pee-wee movie since Big Top Pee-wee in 1988 and Pee-wee's Big Adventure in 1985, so this has been a long time in the making. In this new movie, Pee-wee decides to leave his home town and go on adventure in search of actor Joe Manganiello (seen in Magic Mike Xxl, What to Expect When You're Expecting), who shows up to get a milkshake at the start. This looks like it should be quite fun, especially if you're a fan of Pee-wee that has been awaiting his return. Here's the first official trailer for John Lee's Pee-wee's Big Holiday, direct from Netflix's YouTube: In Pee-wee's Big Holiday,

Universal Plans Another Big Fat Greek Wedding

Universal Plans Another Big Fat Greek Wedding
Orginal My Big Fat Greek Wedding star and screenwriter Nia Vardalos announced back in May that she was working on a follow-up. Now she has a studio in which to hold the proceedings. Universal has stepped in to distribute My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 in the Us and much of the rest of the world. Vardalos had planned to direct, but somewhere along the way that job has fallen to Kirk Jones (Nanny McPhee, What To Expect When You're Expecting) instead. The original film told a fictionalised version of Vardalos’ own early relationship with, and marriage to, actor Ian Gomez. The new one plans to continue the tale, with Vardos' Toula Portokalos and husband Ian (John Corbett) unravelling a big family secret at another even bigger, fatter family wedding.“Now that I’m experiencing motherhood, I’m ready to write the next chapter of my family story,” said Vardalos in her original statement.

'My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2' Brings on 'Nanny McPhee' Director
First announced back in May, Universal Pictures has acquired domestic and some international distribution rights for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, with original My Big Fat Greek Wedding stars Nia Vardalos and John Corbett reprising their roles as Toula and Ian.

Kirk Jones (Nanny McPhee) has signed on to direct from a script by Nia Vardalos, which centers on another family wedding that exposes a longtime family secret and brings the Portokalos family back together again. No other cast members have been confirmed at this time.

Playtone partners Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson and Gary Goetzman are returning to produce the sequel, as they did on the original My Big Fat Greek Wedding, which grossed over $241 million domestically and $368 million worldwide, making it one of the most successful indie films of all time. No production schedule was given for the sequel.

Watch: First Trailer For Jennifer Lopez Thriller "The Boy Next Door'

  • The Playlist
She's had a few attempts by now, but Jennifer Lopez is still in search of her movie comeback. While one-time Bennifer partner Ben Affleck has reinvented himself as a director and as Batman, Lopez has gone a while without a real hit, with films like "The Back-up Plan," "What To Expect When You're Expecting" and "Parker" not quite delivering, and no big-screen appearance in two years (a sign, no doubt, of the relative sparcity of roles for women when they enter their forties). But Lopez has something on the way that seems like it could be a legit hit: falling in the footsteps of Halle Berry, who had a sleeper hit a few years back with "The Call," the star is going into thriller territory with next January's "The Boy Next Door," and a trailer has just arrived for the film. Produced by prolific horror maestro Jason Blum, and directed

Prologue Trailer and Poster for 'If I Stay' Starring Chloe Moretz

It's amazing how I can write about a movie less than two months ago and completely forget it even exists a short time later. That's what happened with If I Stay, an upcoming drama starring Chloe Moretz from director R.J. Cutler (The September Issue) and writer Shauna Cross (Whip It, What to Expect When You're Expecting). The film hits theaters on August 22 and centers around a car accident that leaves 17-year-old Mia (Moretz) in a coma and kills the rest of her family. Along with Moretz, the film co-stars Mireille Enos, Liana Liberato, Jamie Blackley, Lauren Lee Smith, Joshua Leonard and Aisha Hinds. Now I'm still trying to get some more statistics to put something together, but it shouldn't come as any surprise when we forget about a movie or don't even know it exists in the first place. Did you know that in 1995 only 370 movies were released in theaters

Forecast: 'Other Woman' to Take Down 'Captain America' This Weekend... >
With the Summer movie season around the corner, the final weekend of April has three fairly modest movies reaching theaters. The Other Woman has the best chance of beating three-time champion Captain America: The Winter Soldier, though holdover Heaven is for Real might also contend for the top spot. Meanwhile, Brick Mansions and The Quiet Ones probably won't reach $10 million. At 3,204 locations, comedy The Other Woman should see solid attendance from female audiences. The movie stars Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton as three women who team up to get revenge on the man who has been sleeping with all three of them. Diaz is easily the biggest star of the bunch, and has a decent track record in comedies like Bad Teacher ($100.3 million) and What Happens in Vegas ($80.3 million). The movie's tagline nicely sums up the focus of the marketing: "The oddest friends are about to get even.

Chloe Moretz Gets into a Car Crash in 'If I Stay' Trailer

I don't have high expectations for If I Stay from director R.J. Cutler (The September Issue) and writer Shauna Cross (Whip It, What to Expect When You're Expecting). amz asin="B0020BUWX2" size="small"Last night the trailer was sent over with a note to be sure and credit Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures and New Line Cinema when mentioning the film, which centers around a car accident that leaves 17-year-old Mia (Chloe Moretz) in a coma and kills the rest of her family. Along with Moretz, the film co-stars Mireille Enos, Liana Liberato, Jamie Blackley, Lauren Lee Smith, Joshua Leonard and Aisha Hinds. Cross adapted the film from Gayle Forman's novel of the same name and it just looks to me like a bit of a sappy groaner, not exactly bad, but a story that would be far more emotional on the page. WB has set an August 22 release for the film,
