X Factor star Sam Bailey: ‘Being a prison officer is tough. But I miss it every day’ | Erwin James

My former colleagues do extraordinary work under extreme pressure, says the X Factor winner and former guard. They deserve our recognition – and respect

Before Sam Bailey won the 2013 X Factor final, she had been patrolling the landings and corridors of Hmp Gartree, a life-sentence prison in Leicestershire, for three years. “I didn’t really do a lot of singing at work – though I did sing down the corridors sometimes as the acoustics were great. When all the prisoners were locked up I used to sing as I patrolled the corridors. I loved it. But then obviously I needed some time off for the audition. I ended up owing hours which I had to pay back. When I won the X Factor I had a letter from the prison saying I owed them money.”

Updated Oscar predictions for November

We’re heading towards the end of the line, ladies and gentlemen. Well into November now, we’ve only got a few films left to see before all of the contenders will be known entities. As such, it’s a perfect time for an Academy Award predictions update. This is also the time of the year where multiple updates in a month seems appropriate, and in fact, necessary. The race is constantly evolving, which makes any prediction made a month ago completely obsolete. We’re not quite at the weekly point in the year yet, but that’s not too far off, frankly. Before you know it, the big morning will be upon us, and then it’ll be on to Phase Two. Some things reflected here include Steve Carell going Supporting for Battle of the Sexes, as well as Chappaquidick being pushed to 2018. There’s also the fallout of

Trailer drops for Steven Spielberg’s “The Post”

It was only a matter of time. Perhaps the biggest X factor all season long has been what to make of The Post, Steven Spielberg’s latest film. Centered on the epic fight that The Washington Post had with the United States government over the right to publish the infamous Pentagon Papers, this is Academy catnip. Until now though, it had been completely unseen. We were just going by the fact that Spielberg working with Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep, plus the subject matter, makes it a force to reckon with. Now, a Trailer has dropped, just a few hours ago. You’ll be able to see it shortly, but first…a tiny bit of discussion is in order. The film is described by 20th Century Fox like this: “Steven Spielberg directs Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks in The Post, a thrilling drama about the unlikely partnership between The Washington

Blue Planet II is the perfect tonic as the world turns into a horror show | Stuart Heritage

The BBC’s wildlife sequel has it all – profundity, wonder and trippy visuals. But crucially, it transports viewers to a tranquil place untouched by the awfulness above the ocean

Of course Blue Planet II is the year’s most watched TV show. That was always going to be the case. Half of Bake Off’s audience naffed off the instant it left the BBC. This year’s Strictly has been hamstrung by its colossal shrug of a lineup, while X Factor – never the most placid watch in the first place – has become Brexit-themed Kabuki theatre performed inside an exploded retina. There was never any competition.

Blue Planet II has it all. It’s expansive and profound, showing us the sort of inexplicable wonders we tend to forget about during the tedious mundanity of our everyday put-the-washing-out-and-stress-eat-a-bun lives. It’s narrated by our last true national treasure. There’s a hint

What a 5-Year-Old Girl Just Convinced Prince William to Talk to Prince George About
On Monday evening, Prince William left his growing family at home to attend the Pride of Britain Awards. While chatting with 5-year-old Suzie McCash, who recently saved her mom's life by calling 911 (999 in England), the royal admitted that he didn't know what Prince George would do in an emergency. "I have a four-year-old called George and if I gave him a telephone I do not know what he would do," William said. "And do you know what? I'm going to have a conversation with my George about what to do because of what you've done. It's really important." During the event - which celebrates the achievements of truly remarkable people who make our world a better place - the soon-to-be father of three also posed for a few selfies with some young fans before mingling with celebrities such as David Schofield, Sir Rod Stewart, and X Factor judge Nicole Scherzinger.

X Factor's rule changes have achieved the impossible – they make it more unwatchable

Even Dermot O’Leary doesn’t understand how X Factor’s new rules work – they’re so complicated you need a PhD in advanced quantum pointlessness to understand them. Surely the show is now in its death throes

I’m writing this on the assumption that you didn’t watch X Factor this weekend. Because you didn’t, did you? Your life is short, you’re not being subjected to a form of Clockwork Orange-style aversion therapy by a sinister cabal of scientists and there was a programme about fish on the other side.

And that’s just as well. Because, if you did watch X Factor, you probably would have found yourself being baffled to the very point of unconsciousness. The first of this year’s live shows began on Saturday, and with them came some format changes so infuriatingly labyrinthine that they even managed to outfox the show’s own host.
