2017’s Best Films By and About Women

Girls Trip”: Michele K. Short/Universal Pictures

The big screen had a lot to offer in 2017: Amazonian warriors kicking ass (and breaking box office records), tennis stars smashing misogyny, a wildly inventive and Nsfw use of a grapefruit, and so much more. We’ve collected some of our favorite films by and about women this year, and they include biopics about athletes, war movies, and a game-changing super hero film. That’s part of what stands out about this year — the fact that women finally had the opportunity to shine in different genres, both on-screen and behind the scenes. This year’s Best Actress frontrunners aren’t playing the wives of powerful men — they are at the center of their own stories. Finally.

Here are some the year’s best films directed by women and/or about female protagonists, according to us:

Win Passes To The Advance Screening Of Downsizing In St. Louis

Downsizing imagines what might happen if, as a solution to overpopulation, Norwegian scientists discover how to shrink humans to five inches tall and propose a 200-year global transition from big to small. People soon realize how much further money goes in a miniaturized world. With the promise of a better life, everyman Paul Safranek (Matt Damon) and wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig) decide to abandon their stressed lives in Omaha for a new downsized community, taking the irreversible leap that will trigger life-changing adventures when they become small.

Downsizing is directed by Academy Award© winner Alexander Payne (The Descendants, Sideways), starring: Academy Award© winner Matt Damon (The Martian, Good Will Hunting), Academy Award© winner Christoph Waltz (Inglorious Basterds, Django Unchained), Hong Chau (Inherent Vice, Big Little Lies), Academy Award© nominee Kristen Wiig (The Martian, Bridesmaids), Udo Kier (Melancholia), Jason Sudeikis (Colossal), Academy Award© nominee Laura Dern (Wild, Rambling Rose), Neil Patrick Harris

Judd Apatow on Returning to Stand-Up Comedy After 25 Years

Judd Apatow on Returning to Stand-Up Comedy After 25 Years
The first thing Judd Apatow does in his new stand-up special is tell the crowd that he has wanted to do this kind of show since he was a kid.

The second thing he does is joke about how famous he is.

“There’s a little bit of a freak show element to me doing it,” Apatow says of his act and the need to lead it off by addressing his Judd Apatow-ness. “If I ignored that it was weird that I was up there, the audience wouldn’t [listen to my act]. They would just want to know about me and my life.”

Apatow, who is nearing his 50th birthday, sits in a conference room at his production company’s L.A. office. Behind him are photos of the casts of “Freaks and Geeks” and “Girls,” two of his best-loved TV shows. To his left is a whiteboard bearing story notes for season three of one of the current

Kristen Wiig Reveals First Feature as a Writer Since 'Bridesmaids' -- See What It's Called! (Exclusive)
Kristen Wiig may be about to strike comedy gold once again!

The Bridesmaids star talked to Et ahead of the premiere of Downsizing, her new film with Matt Damon, where she shared that she and writing partner Annie Mumolo -- who earned a Best Original Screenplay Oscar nomination for their unbelievably funny 2011 comedy -- are working together on a new project!

"My writing partner and I have been for a long time writing a script, and now we're [in] final rewrite stage, which is very exciting," the 44-year-old actress revealed. "It's called Barb and Star go to Vista Del Mar."

Not to judge a movie by its title, but we are already one hundred percent in for this when it comes out.

In the meantime, Wiig is currently promoting Downsizing, a sci-fi dramedy about a couple that shrinks down (quite literally) to retreat from the stresses of modern life, which reunites her with The Martian co-star Damon.

Gabrielle Union & More Stars Support Terry Crews After He Accuses Agent of Sexual Assault
In October, amid mounting allegations against film producer Harvey Weinstein, Terry Crews claimed that in 2016, a “high level Hollywood executive” had “groped my privates” at a party. Crews eventually named his alleged assailant as Adam Venit.

While many of the actor’s colleagues have chosen to remain silent about his allegation — a choice Crews has said he “understands” — some stars have publicly supported the Brooklyn Nine-Nine actor.

Terry Crews is a stand-up guy. Literally one of the nicest people in our industry. He is honest, kind & true professional. I believe him & stand by him. #MeToo,” Gabrielle Union tweeted.

Oscar Predictions, Round 1: Will It Be Another Controversial Year of Academy Awards?

Oscar Predictions, Round 1: Will It Be Another Controversial Year of Academy Awards?
With only three months and change to go until the winners of the Academy Awards are announced on March 4, 2018, nearly every Oscar contender is playing in theaters -- or, at the very least, screening for critics and Academy voters. Which means I can now speculate -- based on my own reviews, the awards season hype machine and general industry buzz -- about how the nominations will shake out.

Starting now and leading up to the 90th annual Oscars, I will be updating these awards futures monthly, offering my final predictions in each category next month (ahead of the nominations announcement on Jan. 23) and breaking down the frontrunners as well as who should and will win in the following months. This round is all about who's fully in the race -- and who's going to need to do a bit of catching up.

First, a note: Though the Academy itself began taking the necessary steps to diversify

Did Tiffany Haddish Just Storm the Best Supporting Actress Oscar Race?
Tiffany Haddish’s “Girls Trip” may take her all the way to an Oscar, now that a Thursday honor has boosted her chances for gold. Haddish was named best supporting actress by the New York Film Critics Circle for her turn in the Universal Pictures summer comedy — a performance with the kind of legs that got Melissa McCarthy an Oscar nomination for her breakout in 2012’s “Bridesmaids.” “Tiffany Haddish’s performance in ‘Girls Trip’ was just as compelling as Melissa McCarthy in ‘Bridesmaids’ and Amy Schumer in ‘Trainwreck.’ It shouldn’t be ignored this awards season,” tweeted Tracy Oliver, who wrote the script.

Comedies Speak Truth to Power in Golden Globes Race

Comedies Speak Truth to Power in Golden Globes Race
Typically, the Golden Globe Award for best motion picture comedy/musical has been a mixed bag. Only once in the last decade has the victor — 2012’s “The Artist” — gone on to win the best picture Oscar. And, in 2015, “Birdman” lost to “The Grand Budapest Hotel” only to conquer the Golden Globe best pic drama winner “Boyhood” for top Oscar honors. Last year’s Oscar nail-biter pitted Globes comedy/musical winner “La La Land” against drama winner “Moonlight” — and the outcome of that contest produced an infamous finale to the night.

However, this year has flipped that script. The ugly duckling genre has transformed into a glorious swan with a juicy competition in the works. Front-runners include: “Get Out,” “Lady Bird,” “Battle of the Sexes,” “The Big Sick” and “I, Tonya.” With other potential nominees “Downsizing,” “The Greatest Showman,” “The Disaster Artist,” “Baby Driver” and “Beauty and the Beast,” a vibrant category rises, frequently reflecting

Fyc: Tiffany Haddish for "Girls Trip"

by Chris Feil

Tonight Tiffany Haddish will be hosting Saturday Night Live in what some are hoping will be the beginning of a Best Supporting Actress campaign for her breakthrough role in Girls Trip. While it’s been unclear if the studio would be campaigning her, Haddish deserves the kind of groundswell effort that makes awards groups take notice.

How likely are her chances? Melissa McCarthy’s Bridesmaids nomination has been the obvious comparison, at least in terms of recent Oscar history - summer hit, female ensemble comedy, a presumptive “unlikely” narrative. But in her performance I see much more than that. To this viewer, she recalls the hilariously warped pathos of Madeline Kahn, the lovability of Octavia Spencer, and the imposing confidence of Rita Moreno. That’s high praise for sure, but gets at the full spectrum of her work that I’d wager hasn’t been fully explored.

"I'm not pregnant by Leonardo DiCaprio yet, but who knows what could happen?" Tiffany Haddish asks in a way that makes it hard to tell if she's joking. And, truth be told, she probably isn't. Thus far, the 38-year-old comedian has manifested most of the other items on a wish list she made back when she was in her mid-20s, living out of her car ("but in Beverly Hills!

Tiffany Haddish: on Girls Trip, saving the Hollywood comedy and the Dickensian horror of her life story

The breakout star of 2017 on growing up in foster care, Jay-z’s ‘black Friends’ and how Roger Rabbit saved her

Tiffany Haddish cannot take a compliment. Mention that her exuberantly unfiltered performance in the ensemble comedy Girls Trip stole the movie, and vaulted her into the position of breakout star, and the South Central, Los Angeles-born standup is quick to respond: “I’m not a thief. Where I come from, you don’t call someone that. I get really upset when people say, you stole the movie. I’m like: ‘I didn’t steal nothin’, that’s my job!’”

Vanity Fair called Haddish "the funniest person alive right now" after her breakout role in Girls Trip. It is the only comedy so far this year to make $100 million at the Us box office.

All-Women Tech Comedy from Paul Feig and Kim Rosenstock in Development at Freeform

Paul Feig: Flicks And The City 2/ YouTube

Ever wish the series “Silicon Valley” featured more women? Well, Paul Feig, “New Girl’s” Kim Rosenstock, and Freeform are here for you. Per Variety, “Girl Code” is currently in development at the network. Created by Rosenstock and directed by Feig, the half-hour comedy will be set in an all-female incubator.

The series will focus on “an antisocial tech CEO and an outspoken feminist non-profit warrior who must put aside their issues with each other in order to mastermind a groundbreaking, all-women tech incubator,” the source specifies.

Taking inspiration from women coders, robotics, and entrepreneurs, Anonymous Content’s Joy Gorman Wettels (“13 Reasons Why”) originally brought the concept to Feig and Rosenstock. She will exec produce “Girl Code” with Feig, Rosenstock, and Jessie Henderson of Feigco Entertainment. Paramount Television and Anonymous are producing.

Feig has helmed women-driven features including “Bridesmaids,” “Ghostbusters,” and “Spy.” He is currently filming “A Simple Favor,” a thriller centered on a blogger whose best friend goes missing. Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively are starring. “Parks and Rec,” “Nurse Jackie,” and “Weeds” are among Feig’s TV directing credits. In 2016 the director received the first Athena Leading Man Award at the Athena Film Festival.

Rosenstock is writing and exec producing an as-yet untitled comedy for NBC. The series, about a newly single woman who is forced to turn to her family for help, is also being exec produced by Amy Poehler and has a put-pilot commitment.

All-Women Tech Comedy from Paul Feig and Kim Rosenstock in Development at Freeform was originally published in Women and Hollywood on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.
