Kirsten Howard Aug 8, 2017

Producer Jonathan Sothcott talks about running an independent film company in the UK, finding the right project and a post-Brexit industry.

Jonathan Sothcott has had a hand in producing a whole lot of independent films here in the UK over the last decade. You may have even seen a fair few of them yourself, especially if you’re a Danny Dyer completest.

He’s the man behind Hereford Films, the production and financing company he runs with partner Damien Morley. If that name rings a bell, it might well be because Morley owns a modelling agency that takes care of most of the Page 3 girls, and the entrepreneur has even recently launched a bid to buy the Page 3 brand off The Sun himself.

Gotham: The Penguin and Alfred Cast in Batman TV Series

Gotham: The Penguin and Alfred Cast in Batman TV Series
Four additional series regular roles have been cast in Fox and Warner Bros. Television's Gotham, which has a series commitment at the network.

Robin L. Taylor (Another Earth, Accepted, The Walking Dead) has been cast as Oswald Cobblepot (aka The Penguin). With the brains of a chess grandmaster and the morals of a jackal, Oswald Cobblepot is a low-level psychopath (for gangster Fish Mooney) who hides his sadistic lust for power behind an exquisitely polite demeanor.

Zabryna Guevara (Burn Notice, 3 lbs.) has been cast as Captain Essen. Gordon's boss at the Gcpd Homicide Squad, Captain Essen balances the two worlds of police and politics with a Machiavellian skill that's as much corporate litigator as cop.

Sean Pertwee (Alan Partridge, Alien Uprising, Devil's Playground, Camelot) has been cast as Alfred Pennyworth. A tough-as-nails ex-marine from East London, Alfred Pennyworth has loyally served the Waynes. Now, in the wake of their tragic deaths,

Sean Pertwee, Craig Fairbrass and Co Enter the Tower of the Dead

Craig Fairbrass ('Dead Cert'), Jason Maza ('Demons Never Die'), Craig Conway ('Devil's Playground') and Sean Pertwee ('Dog Soldiers') are the fresh faced foursome to new British zombie horror 'Tower of the Dead'. The quartet, who these days between them seem to be placed in every mediocre British horror offering or gangster based project there is going, will be bought together to play members of an Armed Response Team and/or a group of arms dealers who find theirselves teaming up when some begrudged zombie fellas take over a tower block. Sound familiar, then you're likely thinking this sounds very much like 2009's French horror feature 'The Horde'! Brit director Ross Boyask ('Left for Dead') will helm from a script he co-wrote with Paul Reynolds....

Exclusive: Director and Star Named - Strippers vs. Werewolves!

Producer Jonathan Sothcott dropped us a line today to let us know that the search is over for a director and leading lady for his next upcoming feature, Strippers vs. Werewolves.

"Over the last 6 months we've been slightly out of the horror game - apart from steering the UK releases of Dead Cert and Devil's Playground - as Billy Murray and I have been working on a romcom with Richard E Grant called How to Stop Being a Loser and a quirky Danny Dyer thriller called 7Lives, but we are very much back in our favourite genre in 2011!"

"We've been busy readying our kick-ass style comedy horror Strippers vsx Werewolves at Black and Blue Towers over Christmas," says Sothcott. "One of the key steps forward was securing the right director, someone film literate enough to make the material work yet with a pedigree that distributors bought into. Step forward Jonathan Glendening,

Thandie Newton and Cillian Murphy in this First Poster for the Retreat

The apocalypse continues and this time it is an "airborne virus" that is bringing death (Quiet). This is part of the premise for first time director Carl Tibbett's Retreat. This film is currently in production in Wales (Quiet) and at the American Film Market. A showing date has not been announced for the film at the Afm, but here is the first poster.

The poster art shows actors Thandie Newton, Cillian Murphy and Jamie Bell above a lonely, isolated shack. This refuge is the only protection for characters Kate, Martin and a mysterious soldier, as a deadly virus reduces the mainland population to nothing.

A partial synopsis for the Retreat is here:

"A husband and wife rent a remote island cottage while trying to repair their marriage. One day they find a biohazard-suited soldier washed up on the beach, who warns them that everybody on the mainland has been killed

Event Report and Reviews from the 2010 GoreZone International Film Festival

On October 2nd the third annual GoreZone International Film Festival got under way at Leicester Square’s Prince Charles Cinema; and for the first time ever, Dread was on the scene to check it out. Our report follows along with condensed reviews of six of the films shown over the weekend.

Blood Night: The Legend of Mary Hatchet, Breath of Hate, Hyenas, Cyrus: Mind of a Serial Killer, New Terminal Hotel, Darfur, and Devil's Playground are all included, but first a recap of the event and awards show.

In the face of fellow Leicester Square-based festival and horror heavy hitter, Film4 Frightfest, GoreZone (or Gz, as the magazine has rebranded) would appear to be the underdog. Having experienced the festival first-hand, however, it’s pleasing to discover a level of intimacy and audience connection that is easily lost amongst the hustle and bustle of many larger profile fests, bolstered by
