31 underrated movies well worth a look

Simon Brew Aug 18, 2017

Looking for a film to watch, that you might not have considered before? Try some of these...

Sometimes, we figure, you come to a site like this just to find out about a film you didn’t know about. That you want recommendations of movies that you might not otherwise have uncovered. This list, then, has no theme, save that the films on it are really good, and didn’t get much of an audience first time around. That, or they seem to have been forgotten. It’s a real mix, but hopefully, there’s something on here that appeals..

The Brady Bunch Movie

The Brady Bunch films never really seemed to do much business in the UK, and that’s a real pity. No foreknowledge of the series is required, and the first movie takes the Brady film and transplants them into 1990s America, with no

Indie Movie Guide: The All-Female Directed 'Xx'

  • Fandango
It's a fact that mainstream Hollywood has a serious lack of female directors making movies today, and one genre in particular that rarely sees a woman at the helm is horror. This changes with the horror anthology Xx, which has four short films by four different female directors including Karyn Kusama (Aeon Flux, Jennifer's Body), all with female leads. One of those leads may look familiar: Melanie Lynskey, whom you may recognize from TV shows like Two and a Half Men and movies like...

Tomb Raider reboots abound

Tomb Raider and Lara Croft have have caused some bitter debates, and not just over the official cup size (Fyi, videogame Lara is a 36Dd, movie Lara is a 36D). It divided the opinions of viewers and gamers, both hardcore and tourists. Basically, with either, you loved it or hated it – there was very little middle ground. In terms of the movie, most critics leaned toward 'hate it'. Check out the critics' review quotes on the first Tomb Raider movie:

It might be easier to list the things that were good about Tomb Raider, but little comes to mind. – Joe Lozito, Big Picture, Big Sound

In the department of numbing ineptitude, the pacing runs a neck-and-neck race with the dialogue. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

This just in: Women have breasts! – Scott Weinberg, eFilmCritic.com

With confirmation of the videogame reboot (due out from Crystal Dynamics for Christmas 2011), surely a movie

Amanda Seyfried Used to Feel Extremely Ugly

Amanda Seyfried used to feel "extremely ugly". The "Jennifer's Body" actress struggled to accept her looks when she was a teenager and became nervous around other people. She said, "I was super-outgoing until I was around 10. I got a bit older and started getting shy. Way too shy."

"I felt so extremely ugly. When I look back, I was not ugly - I was cute and had a gap in my teeth. But I wish I could have enjoyed that part of my life and be more confident."

Although Amanda was reserved when she was in a group, the blonde beauty used to love performing tracks from her favorite musicals when she was alone at home. The star sang so loudly she terrified her pet cat, who avoided her when she was belting out show tunes.

The 25-year-old actress explained, "Sometimes I would sing around the house for two hours straight,

Happy 22nd Birthday, Hayley Williams!

  • MTV Newsroom
Here's hoping that Hayley Williams didn't get everything she wanted for Christmas, as she still has today's birthday haul to consider. The Paramore singer is now 22 years old, and like many internationally-renowned pop stars her age, she has crammed quite a bit of life into those two decades and change.

Born and raised in Mississippi, Williams moved to her adopted hometown of Franklin, Tennessee when she was 13 years old. It was there the seeds of Paramore began, as she met recently departed bandmates Zac and Josh Farro at school. Though she initially attracted attention as a songwriter and a solo artist at age 14, she wanted to stick with a band. Thus, Paramore was born and signed to Fueled By Ramen. The buzz began slowly for Paramore, though their debut album All We Know is Falling did pick up some attention because of its carefully-crafted but still-edgy pop tunes and its sassy frontwoman.

Earle Haley, Moretz And Madison Start A 'Dance Of The Mirlitons'

"Dance of the Mirlitons" gets together one cute and cozy cast with the new additions of Chloe Moretz, Jackie Earle Haley and Bailee Madison. Rising star Madison nabbed herself the lead role of the pudgy ballerina who's mother (Kristin Bell) continually pushes her to be a star which throws her into a vicious little environment where she has to prove what she's made of in her class. "Mirlitons" was written by Evan Greenberg with Daniel Dubiecki locked in to direct. This feature will be Duiecki's directorial debut, serving as producer on several films including "Jennifer's Body," "Up in the Air" and "Thank You for Smoking." They're planning to shoot "Mirlitons" sometime next year, depending on how soon they can wrangle up enough funding to get production up and running. At the moment Chloe Moretz is filming her part in Martin Scorsese's "Hugo Cabret," based off the book written by Brian Selznick.

Red Riding Hood Trailer Starring Amanda Seyfried

  • FilmJunk
The fairy tale version of Little Red Riding Hood that I remember from when I was a kid involved a naive young girl who is tricked by a wolf on the way to her grandmother's house, the moral of which warned children against talking to strangers and wandering off to unfamiliar places. In an era where Twilight is a cultural force to be reckoned with, however, the tale has apparently received a makeover that involves a beautiful young woman who is betrothed to a man she doesn't love. She ends up falling for a "brooding outsider" who also happens to be a werewolf. Somehow I get the feeling that the original message may have been lost in the translation. Red Riding Hood is directed by Catherine Hardwicke, who also helmed the first Twilight film, and the parallels between them are pretty obvious. Shiloh Fernandez even seems to be a strange

Zombie Football Movie 'Play Dead' Makes Us Think Of Other Movie Genres We'd Like Zombies To Attack

Zombie Football Movie 'Play Dead' Makes Us Think Of Other Movie Genres We'd Like Zombies To Attack
The concept of zombie movies is certainly nothing new, but the undead are biting, clawing and charming their way into Hollywood in a variety of innovative new ways nowadays. These aren't your parents zombies, be they slow or fast moving, or created by virus or curse. Nope, now they're falling in love, giving Jane Austen novels new meaning and even... playing football?

That's right. The latest of these modern zombie tales to get brought to the big screen is an adaptation of Ryan Brown's supernatural thriller "Play Dead," which follows vengeful zombie football players in a football-obsessed Texas town. Variety reports that Mark Canton, producer for George Romero's "Land of the Dead," is producing the flick and "300" screenwriter Joe Schreiber will be adapting it.

Never did we think we'd see a zombie football flick, but now that the idea is out there, we have to admit it sounds like a touchdown.

'Detention' - a modern horror film with a real female serial killer?

  • Planet Fury
"Back To The Future meets Scream, with a hefty dose of John Hughes teen movies." And a female serial killer named Cinderhella.

When I really think about it, there are very few women killers/bad guys/maniacs in horror. Let's name them: Margot Kidder in Sisters, Tamara in Tamara, Mandy Lane in All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, Mrs. Voorhees, That weird ghost from Darkness Falls, the puppet-lady from Dead Silence, May from May, Samara in The Ring, Marie in High Tension, Annie Wilkes in Misery, La femme from Inside, Jennifer from Jennifer's Body, Ginger in Ginger Snaps, Mother from Mother's Day...

And now I start to run out of examples. What is that, like, 13? I know I have missed a few, probably Asian, but considering there are hundreds of horror films, that's not a lot. And no, the Alien from Alien doesn't count. And I don't count sexual lesbian vampires in Hammer films,

Zach Galifianakis Gets A Taste of His Own Between Two Ferns

Every year there's a celebrity interviewer who makes a name for him/herself by being awesome during a celebrity interview. Last year it was comic Matt Zeller. Johnny Simmons and Megan Fox sat down for your average press junket to promote Jennifer's Body. Zeller wanted to talk to Simmons about the young actor's role in Hotel for Dogs instead. At that point, Fox was just in the way, so Zeller had her wear a paper bag over her head so she wouldn't be a distraction. Trust me, it's funny when you watch it. This year it's Texas FM radio host and local television personality Gordon Keith. Zach Galifianakis was in the Good Morning Texas studio to promote his new movie It's Kind of a Funny Story. Keith, who's no stranger to the awkward interview, Between Two Ferns-ed the socks off his interviewee. Galifianakis appears taken aback when Keith asks him

Megan Fox Joins Friends With Kids

  • FilmJunk
Outside of her Transformers films, Megan Fox hasn't had the best of luck in her career choices. Her first film in a leading role, Jennifer's Body, failed to attract crowds and this past summer's Jonah Hex flat-out crashed and burned. Her latest project comes in the form of an ensemble comedy called Friends with Kids, written and directed by Jennifer Westfeldt. The film already has a solid cast on board with Jon Hamm, Adam Scott, Kristen Wiig, and Westfeldt herself currently signed. The romantic-comedy "revolves around a pair of thirtysomething best friends (Scott and Westfeldt) who observe the toll that having kids has taken on the couples they know and resolve to bypass that stress by having a child and then date other people." Fox will play a woman Scott begins to date. After breaking her ties to Michael Bay, it's been interesting to see where Megan Fox is taking

Megan Fox joins Jon Hamm and Kristen Wiig in Kids comedy

  • JoBlo
Some might say that Megan Fox's career is in jeopardy after both Jennifer's Body and Jonah Hex bombed badly (and her indie drama with Mickey Rourke, Passion Play, was met with horrible reviews out of the Toronto Film Fest). So for her next film, she's decided to take the backseat and play a supporting role. Fox has signed on to star in Friends With Kids, a comedy that has Jon Hamm, Kristen Wiig, Adam Scott and Jennifer Westfeldt. In the film, which Westfeldt will also direct from a...
