Sdcc Interview: Dylan “Hornswoggle” Postl, star of Leprechaun: Origins

david j. moore chats with Dylan “Hornswoggle” Postl, star of Leprechaun: Origins, at the San Diego Comic-Con…

At four feet, four inches, Dylan “Hornswoggle” Postl might not seem like a likely candidate for professional wrestling, but he’s made his mark in WWE wrestling with a Cruiserweight Champion title on Smackdown! (2007) and other physical feats on WWE Raw. This year he’s made his crossover into films with an appearance in Muppets Most Wanted, and now with the WWE / Lionsgate joint venture of the horror film Leprechaun: Origins, which hopes to reignite interest in the horror franchise, which starred Warwick Davis. A separate, unrelated entity that stands on its own, Origins purports to be a straight-up horror film, with full-tilt gore, violence, and action, courtesy of the evil Leprechaun, played by the one and only Hornswoggle.

Sdcc Interview: Zach Lipovsky, director of Leprechaun: Origins

david j. moore chats with Zach Lipovsky, director of Leprechaun: Origins, at the San Diego Comic-Con…

WWE and Lionsgate have teamed up to reignite the Leprechaun horror franchise with Leprechaun: Origins, starring WWE superstar Dylan “Hornswoggle” Postl, who plays the iconic title role. Director Zach Lipovsky, inspired by the works of Guillermo del Toro, intends to horrify and thrill audiences rather than to make them chuckle and laugh, and by all indications, Leprechaun: Origins is as far as the east is to the west in terms of being comparable to the films starring Warwick Davis.

david j. moore: A lot of people seem to think that Leprechaun Origins is a reboot of the well-known franchise. Would you care to clarify that a little bit?

Zach Lipovsky: The really cool thing about Leprechaun Origins is that it’s a totally new, fresh perspective on the whole Leprechaun franchise. It’s also a fully legitimate,

Sdcc – Our first look at Leprechaun in Leprechaun: Origins

Coming out from their panel during Comic-Con, we have our first look at Dylan Postl (aka WWE’s Hornswoggle) in the reboot of the Leprechaun franchise, Leprechaun: Origins. Here’s the image…

Quite the departure wouldn’t you say?

Director Zach Lipovsky said in an interview with Bloody Disgusting, “Our Leprechaun is completely different than what you’re used to seeing in movies and elsewhere,” Lipovsky continues. “Our approach was to make something that could really be out there. Something more organic and less fairy tale. Our creature is something that clearly has biological roots. That being said, it does have all the traits you’d expect from a Leprechaun… the pointy ears, the lust for gold… but ours also has the skin of… let’s say a naked mole rat. It has dead things hanging off of it… we took a very dark and disturbing approach when it came to bringing it to life.

Trailer for WWE's Horror Thriller Leprechaun: Origins

EW

WWE Studios has released the first trailer for their horror movie Leprechaun: Origins, which is a reboot of the original cult franchise. I've enjoyed the Leprechaun films that have been made over the years because of how absurd they were. I was especially entertained by the cheesy humor. The reboot seems to have ditched the humor aspect of the franchise and the filmmakers seem to be going for more scares this time around. As much as I enjoy horror films, this doesn't look that good to me.

"Leprechaun: Origins concerns two young couples who, while backpacking through the Irish countryside, 'quickly discover the idyllic land is not what it appears to be be when [a] town’s residents offer the hikers an old cabin at the edge of the woods. Soon, the friends will find that one of Ireland’s most famous legends is a terrifying reality.'”
