“New Horror

We are in the midst of a horror film resurgence. A significant group of contemporary horror films made in the past couple of years is reminiscent of the socio-political classics of the 1960s and 1970s in that they are boldly confronting the terrifying undercurrent of life today. Like their predecessors, these films tackle class, gender identity, and race in a way that shows us both where we are and how far we,

‘Neo Yokio’ Review: This Futuristic Netflix Story is The Greatest Robot Butler Anime of 2017

‘Neo Yokio’ Review: This Futuristic Netflix Story is The Greatest Robot Butler Anime of 2017
In the broad scope of anime history, it would be inaccurate (and maybe even a little unfair) to call “Neo Yokio” an unprecedented series. But you’d be hard-pressed to find a batch of six TV episodes with quite the same subject matter overlap as the latest Netflix animated effort. Starring the voice talents of Jaden Smith and executive produced by Ezra Koenig, “Neo Yokio” is a hyperspecific blend of neo-futurist metropolises, prep school drama, and high-society intrigue, all with a dash of field hockey and weekend jaunts to the Hamptons. The result is a bespoke anime that’s confounding at times, but always in search of new layers to its insulated universe.

Wisely, “Neo Yokio” doesn’t spend more than a narrated intro explaining the origins of its title city, an alternate futurist New York of sorts. Instead it revels in a slew of off-kilter details in the life

First look at Kit Harington and Liv Tyler in the upcoming BBC drama Gunpowder

As Game of Thrones Season 7 draws to a close this evening the King of the North is going to have some free time on his hands for a few months, and with this Kit Harington is plotting to bring down the Houses of Parliament along with Tom Cullen, Liv Tyler and Edward Holcroft to name but a few. Also, it may have been prudent to mention beforehand this is a new BBC drama series titled Gunpowder, which follows Guy Fawkes and fellow conspirators in plot to destroy both King James I and Parliament on the 5th November 1605.

The specially-filmed, 30-second teaser – seen below – follows a trail of gunpowder into a cellar where Guy Fawkes (Tom Cullen) sits in wait. Though Fawkes first appears to be alone, the camera pans round to reveal that behind him stands Robert Catesby (Kit Harington), the Warwickshire gentleman who was the plot’s key mastermind and driving force.

Performer of the Week: Carrie Coon

Performer of the Week: Carrie Coon
The Performer | Carrie Coon

The Show | The Leftovers

The Episode | “The Book of Nora” (June 4, 2017)

The Performance | We would’ve felt perfectly justified in naming Coon Potw if she’d done nothing more as Nora in the HBO drama’s uber-romantic final episode than flash the hard-won smile that said, astonished, “I can’t believe I’m getting a happy ending.” But the series’ conclusion gave her a zillion opportunities to remind us why she’s earned this distinction time and time again, and as is her wont, she seized every one of ’em.

Over the course of the 75-minute installment,

5 Exciting Films in the 2017 Berlin Film Festival Competition Lineup
Comfortably wedged between Sundance and Cannes in every respect, the Berlin Film Festival is a massive orgy of world cinema that’s come to be known for the unrivaled variety of its programming. Best illustrated by its adventurous sidebars, the festival’s exotic tastes — unusual for such a glitzy and commercialized culture event — often spill over into the more prestigious Competition section, which has served as a launching pad for several of the current decade’s very best films (many of which, like Mia Hansen-Løve’s “Things to Come,” might have slipped through the cracks if not for such a prominent spotlight). And, in stark contrast to Cannes, the festival’s recent winners have been as worthy as they have been unexpected, ranging from a frigid Chinese neo-noir (“Black Coal, Thin Ice”) to a crushingly intimate documentary about Europe’s ongoing migrant crisis (“Fire at Sea”).

Never Open the Door Q&A: Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Vito. When did you first come up with the idea for Never Open the Door?

Vito Trabucco: Thanks for having me. The idea first came from Chris Maltauro, my producer and co-writer, our camera operator Mike Bates, and me one night in a parking lot when we wrapped on another shoot. A few months prior I completed my first feature, Bloody Bloody Bible Camp. We were just eager to do another one.

‘Black Sails’ Season 4 Trailer Calls For ‘Dark Men To Do Dark Things’

‘Black Sails’ Season 4 Trailer Calls For ‘Dark Men To Do Dark Things’
The end is about to begin in the fourth and final season of the Starz series “Black Sails.” The prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel “Treasure Island” may be taking its last bow, but not before capturing a massive war in the West Indies between the British settlers and pirates. A new trailer for the drama debuted at New York Comic Con, which shows that the shores of New Providence have never been bloodier.

“Right now, good men are not what the moment requires,” the trailer intones. “Right now, the time calls for dark men to do dark things.” Sounds like a good time.

Blasting cannons and battling ships follow, with John Silver (Luke Arnold), Eleanor (Hannah New), and Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) preparing for war. Confirming that the series will end with a bang, Flint says, “We came here not just to expel England, but to defeat them.
