As Industry Awards Move Forward, ‘The Shape of Water’ Takes the Lead
The new year has brought the usual wave of guilds and industry groups weighing in on the year’s best work. Editors, art directors, casting directors, writers, makeup artists, and now, producers, have all chimed in this week, with cinematographers, sound mixers, visual effects artists, and directors still to come.

And pay attention. This is momentum week, as Oscar voters receive ballots Friday and will vote for a single pressure-cooked week. It will be pencils down on Jan. 12.

The December circuit made it clear what film is the critical darling of the year: Jordan Peele’s “Get Out,” which has claimed 12 best picture prizes so far. But “critics don’t vote for Oscars” is always an important mantra this time of year. Conversely, the guilds have crossover membership with the film Academy, so it’s worth taking serious note of their choices.

At this point, Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water” has reaped the most

Top 7 Sports Movies Inspired by True StoriesTop 7 Sports Movies Inspired by True StoriesAmanda Wood and Jenny Bullough12/18/2017 10:00:00 Am

Sports movies are a dime a dozen these days, but not all of them are able to claim the highly-coveted title of true stories. Based on the unbelievable but true events, I, Tonya is a darkly comedic tale of American figure skater, Tonya Harding, and one of the most sensational scandals in sports history. Though Harding was the first American woman to complete a triple axel in competition, her legacy was forever defined by her association with an infamous, ill-conceived, and even more poorly executed attack on fellow Olympic competitor Nancy Kerrigan.

There are plenty of other sports movies based on true stories that we love, and we’ve made a list to put all of our faves in one place. A wide variety of sports are represented here, with movies about baseball,

How ‘Wonder’ Will Become the $150 Million Hit of the Christmas Box Office

How ‘Wonder’ Will Become the $150 Million Hit of the Christmas Box Office
Lionsgate’s “Wonder” made third place look sexy over Thanksgiving. After doubling predictions with $27.5 million on its opening weekend, it fell less than 18 percent on its second weekend— compared to the 56 percent drop for “Justice League” and 29 percent for “The Star,” the other two films that opened November 17. With $73 million domestic as of November 29, “Wonder” is fast approaching profit on a $20 million production budget.

In some key aspects, “Wonder” resembles “The Blind Side.” Both are based on feel-good best sellers (“Wonder” a novel, “The Blind Side” nonfiction) about young people who overcome school-year odds with the help of dedicated parental figures. Both films opened the weekend before Thanksgiving as counter-programming against a blockbuster (“The Twilight Saga: New Moon” then, “Justice League” here).

12 Strong Trailer #2 Puts Chris Hemsworth on the Front Lines of War

12 Strong Trailer #2 Puts Chris Hemsworth on the Front Lines of War
With the Thanksgiving holiday just around the corner, Warner Bros. Pictures has released the second trailer for 12 Strong, based on the declassified true story of the Horse Soldiers, the first group of soldiers sent into Afghanistan after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. While there is not necessarily a direct correlation between these soldiers at the Thanksgiving holiday, the trailer opens with a brief segment that features bits of footage with the messages, "Thankful for home," "Thankful for freedom" and "Thankful for family" before the trailer begins.

On our darkest day, they were our greatest hope. 12 Strong is set in the harrowing days following 9/11 when a U.S. Special Forces team, led by their new Captain, Mitch Nelson (Hemsworth), is chosen to be the first U.S. troops sent into Afghanistan for an extremely dangerous mission. Their mission takes them to the harsh mountainous landscape of Afghanistan, as they try to convince Northern

Sandra Bullock to Play Texas State Senator Wendy Davis in “Let Her Speak”

Bullock on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”: YouTube

Sandra Bullock will portray a contemporary feminist icon in her next project. The Oscar winner will play former Texas state senator Wendy Davis in the spec “Let Her Speak,” Variety confirms. Davis made national headlines in 2013 when she filibustered for 11 hours in order to delay an extremely restrictive anti-abortion bill in her home state.

Mario Correa wrote the spec script and Escape ArtistsTodd Black and Jason Blumenthal have signed on to produce. “The package will now be shopped to studios and should court several suitors over the next week,” the source reveals.

No director is attached to “Let Her Speak” yet but, considering the feminist forces that are Bullock and Davis, we’re pulling for a woman to helm the film.

Since the abortion bill filibuster Davis has become a well-known voice in politics and women’s issues. Just yesterday Cosmo published an op-ed she wrote detailing the ways women are specifically vulnerable to gun violence. Davis decided not to seek re-election to Texas’ state senate in 2014 and instead ran for the state’s governorship. She lost her bid to Greg Abbott, the exiting Texas Attorney General.

A transcript of Davis’ 2013 filibuster was published as “Let Her Speak” that same year.

Bullock won an Academy Award in 2010 for biopic “The Blind Side” and received a nomination for “Gravity” in 2014. You can catch her next in the all-female “Ocean’s Eleven” spinoff, “Ocean’s Eight.” The just-wrapped film hits theaters June 8 and also stars Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Helena Bonham Carter, and Awkwafina. Bullock’s also signed on to star in “Birdbox,” a post-apocalyptic Netflix thriller from Oscar winner Susanne Bier (“In a Better World”).

Sandra Bullock to Play Texas State Senator Wendy Davis in “Let Her Speak” was originally published in Women and Hollywood on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Sandra Bullock to Star as Filibustering Senator Wendy Davis in ‘Let Her Speak’

Sandra Bullock to Star as Filibustering Senator Wendy Davis in ‘Let Her Speak’
Sandra Bullock will star in the spec “Let Her Speak” as Texas senator Wendy Davis, whose 11-hour filibuster helped stall an anti-abortion bill in the Texas state house.

Todd Black and Jason Blumenthal are on board to produce through their Escape Artists banner.

At the time, Davis was a little known Democratic senator who soon became a national icon on the subject of abortion after filibustering for 11 hours in order to stall a bill, and ultimately delaying its passage beyond the midnight deadline for the end of the legislative session. The bill would have included more restrictive abortion regulations for Texas and would have closed all abortion clinics in the state.

Mario Correa penned the spec.

The package will now be shopped to studios and should court several suitors over the next week.

The role seems right up Bullock’s alley and could be another awards play for the star who won her first Oscar for playing

‘Blade Runner 2049’ Box Office Carnage: Sony and Ryan Gosling Stand to Lose, but Roger Deakins Still Stands to Win
It could have been worse: The final domestic weekend totals for “Blade Runner 2049” came to $32.7 million, about $1.25 million better than initial pre-Sunday estimates. That could mean all is not lost for Warner Bros. — but with production, marketing, and distribution around $300 million, it’s still a dreadful result. Who stands to suffer the most? Here are some losers — and, some possible winners.

Alcon Entertainment and Sony

Alcon, the 20 year-old production company founded by FedEx’s Fred Smith, has produced 31 films, with one big moneymaker (“The Blind Side”), some smaller successes (“Dude, Where’s My Car?,” “P.S. I Love You,” “Insomnia”) and several higher-budget flops (“Transcendence,” “Point Break”).

Its total investment in “Blade Runner 2049” isn’t totally clear. Sony is reported to have contributed $90 million for international rights, with its share of marketing expenses uncertain. So Alcon will neither bear the entire expense nor keep all the revenues, but it

Based on a True Story: Why So Many Biopics Create Oscar Buzz But Become Box-Office Flops
Fall is the season of Real-People movies — the biopics that often fuel Oscar hopes. Recent weeks brought “The Battle of the Sexes,” “Stronger,” and “Victoria & Abdul” and there’s more than a dozen to come, including “Marshall,” “The Post,” “Darkest Hour,” and “The Current War.” There’s good reason to believe that a biopic might produce awards. In the last five years, 28 of the 100 Oscar acting nominees played real-life characters, as did four of the 20 winners. But when it comes to the box office, the odds aren’t as kind.

Since 2012, there have been about 100 biopics including hits like “The King’s Speech,” “The Social Network,” and “Julie and Julia.” But while recent years featured real-life characters and stories in some of the biggest non-franchise hits, the format may have reached a saturation point.

Last year,

'Blade Runner' Sequel a Make-Or-Break Moment for Producer Alcon
Producers Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove — who met at Princeton University before convincing FexEx founder Fred Smith to help them launch the film company Alcon Entertainment 20 years ago — are candid. They admit that Alcon's future depends on Blade Runner 2049, the sequel to Ridley Scott's sci-fi epic that hits theaters Oct. 6. "This is a chips-in-the-center-of-the-table exercise," says Kosove.

After a string of box-office wins — most notably, The Blind Side in 2009 — Kosove, 47, and Johnson, 50, arrived at a moment of reckoning. Alcon, with a staff of 45, no longer wanted to subsist solely on...

“One of the riskier decisions Simon Curtis and I made with the score was to withhold the main theme until the middle of the film, when A. A.
