Austin Film Society Bangs Drum for Lone Star Filmmakers

Everything is truly bigger in Texas, including the 30th birthday celebration for the Austin Film Society, which finishes its year-long pearl anniversary at this year’s Texas Film Awards.

(Linklater’s new film, “Everybody Wants Some,” will world premiere at SXSW the following evening, with an Austin Film Society screening several days later.)

Miramax acquired by beIN Media Group

  • ScreenDaily
The Doha-based media and entertainment company has acquired 100% of Miramax following a deal with Qatar Investment Authority and Colony Capital announced on Wednesday.

There had been speculation about the deal last year as the Middle East sports broadcaster flexed its claws. It made several successful bids on French sports broadcasting contracts and had identified entertainment production as a growth area.

The parties said Miramax, the storied entertainment company that has gone through several owners after Harvey and Bob Weinstein founded it in 1979, will continue to operate as a film and TV studio.

This year Miramax will invest in and co-distribute the likes of Bad Santa 2, Bridget Jones’s Baby, The 9th Life Of Louis Drax, and Southside With You, the Sundance entry that Miramax acquired in a $2m North American deal announced in Berlin and will distribute with Roadside Attractions.

The slate includes From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series, heading into its third season. Miramax’s library

Miramax, the studio that defined the independent film scene of the 1980s and ’90s by producing the likes of “The Crying Game” and “Pulp Fiction,” has changed hands again.

BeIN Media Group has acquired 100% of the studio for an undisclosed sum, the Doha-based broadcaster announced Wednesday. It bought the company from a consortium of investors that includes Qatar Investment Authority and Colony Capital. They, in turn, purchased the studio in 2010 from Disney for $660 million.

Miramax has a library of 700 titles. After a period of time when it was primarily focused on monetizing its catalog of films, the company has once again begun backing new productions. In 2016 Miramax will invest in and co-distribute a number of movies, including sequels to “Bad Santa” and “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” as well as the Barack and Michelle Obama romantic drama “Southside With You.” It also produces the television show “From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series
