Now here’s a surprise. It’s been about a year since Universal and DreamWorks Animation announced that the planned follow-up to smash-hit The Croods had been abandoned. Problems cracking the story had left the movie in limbo, and in lieu of solid progress, the film was shelved.

The Croods 2 Finally Gets a Release Date

  • MovieWeb
DreamWorks has firmed up some of their upcoming slate and it is a little surprising, for various reasons. Croods 2 is now set for release on September 18, 2020, and Spooky Jack is set for a September 17, 2021, release. Last year, it was reported that the studio canceled The Croods 2, despite the fact that the movie was a big financial success. For some reason, that has changed and now the sequel is on track for release in a few years.

The Croods was released in 2013 and made a very impressive $587.2 million worldwide. Even though it seemed, for whatever reason, they weren't going to do the sequel, DreamWorks Animation has had a change of heart and The Croods 2 is back on. Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, Catherine Keener, Cloris Leachman and Clark Duke are all set to reprise their roles for the sequel, with Leslie Mann set to join the cast this time around.

Why Sony Pictures Animation Still Needs a Big Hit – and Where It Might Come From

Annecy, France — Having sprinted to deliver toon movies this year in near record time, Sony Pictures Animation has a brace of new animated feature originals on deck for potential 2020/21 release, Kristine Belson, Sony Pictures Animation president announced at France’s Annecy Festival Thursday night, delivering a masterclass on Re-Shaping Sony Pictures Animation.

Four of the five projects which Belson went on to talk about in some detail, without implying they will be Spa’s only releases over 2020/21, are from first-time directors.

In contrast, Spa looks set not to release any movie at all in 2019, she added.

That may seem like an original move by a new Hollywood animation studio head, but it’s one way of confronting Spa’s major challenge. Producing animated features since 2006’s “Open Season,” Sony Pictures Animation has still to fire up a “Despicable Me” size franchise which can, as Belson out, provide a transformational moment,

Consider With Reservations: The Stars of Quantity Over Quality Cinema

The stars of yesterday now are making three films a year you never knew existed until they show up on Netflix.^ Real Movie ^

In my prior life as a script reader, I certainly read a lot of bad scripts, but at times, an even more common occurrence was a script that seemed to do a great many things right, but somehow fell just short of being something you wanted to champion as a movie. As draining as the terrible scripts were, there’s something pure about clear-cut bad. It takes little effort to explain why they’re unfit.

The real challenges were the scripts that had kind of a decent premise, kind of an okay twist or two, and a lead character who wasn’t bad so much as he or she was just… there. The raw materials are there for what Could be a script. They just happen to be assembled in the least compelling way

What's going on at DreamWorks Animation?

Brendon Connelly Mar 23, 2017

Since DreamWorks Animation got snapped up by Universal, it seems several films have been cancelled. So what's actually happening?

If we imagine that the acquisition of Pixar by Disney was some kind of seismic shift for the Emeryville animation house, then Dreamworks Animation, by comparison, must be living in the red-hot cradle of a hyperactive volcano.

Animated films take so long, from concept to production to release, that recent Dreamworks titles are making their eventual escape from a corporate context which bears little relation to where they were conceived.

The Croods is a particularly good example. It was, originally, going to be a stop-motion film produced at Aardman with a screenplay by John Cleese. Without it ever being cancelled outright, this project continued to evolve, as Dreamworks twisted and turned like a kaleidoscope around it, in to the final product. The plot was different. The characters were different.

Get Out movie review: yes all white people

MaryAnn’s quick take… Shattering and deep-down bone-chilling. A viciously unsettling nightmare of race and privilege that carves out a much-needed paradigm shift for genre film. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for more diverse storytelling

I’m “biast” (con): not generally impressed by horror movies

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

I am shattered by this movie. I am horrified by it… and not in the way that horror movies are typically intended to horrify us: this one is deliberately carving out whole new realms of horror onscreen, realms that have always existed for some people in the real world while others of us have been blind to them, but realms that none of us have ever seen onscreen like this before. Get Out is paradigm-shifting stuff, not just for movies, for “mere” entertainment, but maybe even for our culture. Get Out could

China’s Oriental DreamWorks Looks Set to Restructure (Exclusive)

China’s Oriental DreamWorks Looks Set to Restructure (Exclusive)
Oriental DreamWorks, the production joint venture between DreamWorks Animation and Chinese partners, may be restructured, according to well-placed sources in China.

The sources say that Comcast is in talks with Oriental DreamWorks’ Chinese backers, including China Media Capital and Shanghai Alliance Investment Ltd., about possibly giving up Dwa’s 45% stake in the venture. If that happens, it would mark the end of one of the highest-profile linkups between Hollywood and China.

The potential restructuring comes as Oriental DreamWorks struggles to maintain a foothold in the competitive animated-feature marketplace. Its last outing, “Kung Fu Panda 3,” failed to perform as well as expected at the box office, and its only film currently slated for release, the Himalayan tale “Everest,” is not due out until September 2019. Last week, the company laid off some 40 animators at its Shanghai base.

At the same time, Glendale-based Dwa has been re-evaluating the projects in its own pipeline,

Sony Animation Goes Diverse with Miles Morales as Spider-Man and Lin-Manuel Miranda Musical ‘Vivo’
Sony Pictures Animation, which has fallen on hard times in recent years, highlighted diversity and female empowerment as part of its comeback at Wednesday’s slate preview in Culver City. The biggest news was confirmation that Miles Morales, the mixed race web-slinging teen (African-American and Hispanic), will star in the untitled “Spider-Man” feature coming December 21, 2018.

Morales, created by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli to succeed the late Peter Parker in the comics, has already become a TV animation staple on Disney Xd’s “Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors” (initially voiced by Donald Glover).

The animated “Spider-Man” marks a return to Spa for Phil Lord and Chris Miller (“Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”), who directed “The Lego Movie” and are currently making the “Han Solo” standalone “Star Wars” feature.

In a pre-recorded video message from London, Lord said, “What inspired us the most is that anyone can wear the mask.

Lin-Manuel Miranda Brings Vivo To Sony Animation

There’s a reason why undeniably talented people like Lin-Manuel Miranda seem to suddenly burst into the social consciousness while being exceedingly prolific with the art they produce. It’s not that they unexpectedly hit the creative mother lode and quickly churn out a bunch of hits – it’s that one big success means that the projects studios have been turning down for years are suddenly very attractive, and potentially profitable. This is why Sony Animation has snapped up Vivo.

Vivo was happening at DreamWorks originally, but failed to find its feet there. Meanwhile, the actor, composer, playwright, rapper and writer delivered the music for the hit movie Moana, in addition to having created his wildly popular Broadway show, Hamilton – inspired by the biography of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, by Ron Chernow. These high profile successes mean that previously rejected projects are now finding themselves nestled in nurturing new homes.

Deadline reports that Sony Pictures Animation has set a December 18, 2020 release date for Vivo, which is currently the only movie set for release on that date.
