The Weekend Warrior 9/30/2016: Deepwater Horizon, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Masterminds

  • LRM Online
Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.

This Past Weekend:

While the new movies reigned at the box office this past weekend, both Antoine Fuqua’s The Magnificent Seven (Sony) and the animated Storks (Warner Bros.) didn’t fare nearly as well as our projections, both falling short by about $10 million. The Magnificent Seven, starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, fared decently with $34.7million, which is about the average for Washington’s films, but the fourth highest opening for a Western after last year’s The Revenant, the animated Rango, and Cowboys and Aliens. Storks’ $21.3 million opening wasn’t great compared to other animated September releases with Sony still holding the September opening record with Hotel Transylvania 2, but it should continue to do well with no other animated movies opening for another month.

Tyler Hoechlin Takes Flight as Superman on ‘Supergirl’
Look, up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Tyler Hoechlin!

The star of Richard Linklater’s “Everybody Wants Some!” has just been cast as Superman/Clark Kent on next season of The CW’s “Supergirl.”

Read More: Superman Is Coming to ‘Supergirl’ Season Two

Warner Bros. TV had previously announced that Superman would appear at the beginning of “Supergirl’s” second season, as the show moves from CBS to The CW. The plot hasn’t been revealed yet, other than Superman will be visiting his Krypton cousin Kara (Melissa Benoist) in National City.

Superman has already made appearances on “Supergirl,” but only as blurry glimpses.

“Greg [Berlanti] and I have wanted to work with Tyler for ages, so this worked out perfectly because Tyler is Superman,” said executive producer Andrew Kreisberg.

Hoechlin will next star in “Stratton.” His other credits include the TV series “Teen Wolf” and “7th Heaven,” as well as the films “Road to Perdition,” “Hall Pass” and “Solstice.”

The casting continues the DC Comics tradition of keeping actors playing the film and TV versions of its characters separate, as Henry Cavill currently plays Superman on the big screen. The announcement also puts to rest speculation that Tom Welling, who played young Clark Kent on “Smallville” for The WB (and later, The CW), might be up for the role.

Final Do-Over Trailer Has Sandler and Spade on the Run
Back in October 2014, comedian/actor Adam Sandler signed an unprecedented deal with Netflix, with the actor set to develop, star in and produce four movies for the streaming service. The first movie in this pact was the Western comedy The Ridiculous Six, and earlier this year, we learned that the second movie would be The Do-Over, arriving May 27. Today we have the final red band trailer for this comedy, which features plenty of R-rated language, so be sure to watch at your own risk. We also have six new photos to check out as well.

The life of a bank manager is turned upside down when a friend from his past manipulates him into faking his own death and taking off on an adventure. Adam Sandler plays Max, re-teaming with his old Saturday Night Live pal David Spade as Charlie, two life-long friends who are about to give their mundane

The Wolverine 3 Adds The Office Co-Creator Stephen Merchant

Last night we found out that British stage and screen legend Richard E. Grant had joined the cast of James Mangold’s follow up to The Wolverine as a “villainous mad scientist type.” Now, Deadline is reporting that none other than Stephen Merchant will be joining him – though this time we know even less about his character.

In fact, we know literally nothing. The trade doesn’t even mention if it’ll be a main or supporting role, but there’s already some speculation that he might be mutant shape-shifter, Morph. Yeah, we know….that’s not very likely.

Merchant is best known for his sitcom work with writing partner Ricky Gervais, but he has also had quite a few acting gigs, including roles in the likes of Hall Pass, Hot Fuzz and I Give It A year.

The Wolverine 3 (as it’s being referred to pending an official title

The Office Actor/Co-Creator Stephen Merchant Joins The Cast Of The Wolverine 3

They seem to be lining up a bunch of lanky Brits for Logan to hack through in The Wolverine 3. Last night we found out that Richard E. Grant would play a "villainous mad scientist type" in James Mangold's movie, and now Deadline reports that Stephen Merchant (Hall Pass, Hot Fuzz, I Give It A year) will join him - though we know even less about the character he'll be playing. And by less, we mean fuck all. There are no details provided whatsoever, and because we can't nail down any specific comic arcs they're drawing from, speculating about who it could be is difficult, too. Also starring are Patrick Stewart, Boyd Holbrook and, of course, Hugh Jackman. The Wolverine 3 is to hit theaters on May 3, 2017.

'The Do-Over' Red Band Trailer Goes Wild with Sandler and Spade
Back in October 2014, comedian Adam Sandler signed a groundbreaking deal with Netflix to produce and star in four new movies exclusively for the streaming service. The first movie to come out of this deal was the Western comedy The Ridiculous Six. Last month, we learned that the second movie is The Do-Over, with the streaming service releasing a brief teaser trailer. Today we have the first full trailer for this comedy, which sheds new light on the story.

In The Do-Over, Adam Sandler plays "Max" and David Spade plays "Charlie," old friends tired of their mundane lives who reunite at their 25th high school reunion for the ultimate mulligan: they decide to wipe the slate clean for a do&#173-over. 'Revenant' Hunts #1 Amid Newcomers, '5th Wave', 'The Boy' and 'Dirty Grandpa'

'Revenant' Hunts #1 Amid Newcomers, '5th Wave', 'The Boy' and 'Dirty Grandpa'
A new PG-13 horror (The Boy), an R-rated comedy (Dirty Grandpa) and a sci-fi thriller (The 5th Wave) make up the new releases hitting theaters this weekend and they all stand to make around $10-12 million. Meanwhile The Revenant is looking to score a #1 finish in its third weekend in wide release, but it's going to need another strong hold to top last weekend's champ, Ride Along 2. The Revenant has finished second the past two weekends, but is finally looking to cross the finish line in first. The 12-time Oscar nominee has grossed nearly $50 million since Oscar nominations were announced last Thursday, following not only an outstanding first weekend, but delivering a mere 20.2% drop last weekend. This weekend the film expands its reach into an additional 152 theaters, which includes 186 IMAX runs and 268 Premium Large Format (Plf) runs. That said, a 35% drop almost seems a worst case scenario as it

An Unleashed Jason Sudeikis Steals The Hilarious Sleeping With Other People

The transition from the small to the big screen is a tricky one to master. Some personalities are brimming with so much energy, talent and charisma that they can.t help but ascend to celluloid while others struggle to find their voice in their new medium and slowly decline into obscurity. Saturday Night Live alumni Jason Sudeikis is somewhere in between. Sudeikis. rise from scene-stealing support in Semi-Pro and The Campaign to credible leading man in Hall Pass, Horrible Bosses and We.re The Millers has been impressive. But he hasn.t looked entirely at home in these parts, and some of his performances have felt a tad forced, which has slightly hindered his comedic efforts. But things appear to be changing for Sudeikis. Weekend Report: Moviegoers Flee From 'Fifty Shades'
Coming off a massive holiday weekend, Fifty Shades of Grey plummeted 74 percent in its second outing. Still, the movie easily held on the top spot this weekend with $22.3 million.Among the new releases, McFarland, USA and The Duff did solid business, while Hot Tub Time Machine 2 flopped.Fifty Shades of Grey's 74 percent drop is steeper than the second weekend declines for The Fault in our Stars, Valentine's Day, and all five Twilight movies. It's the second-biggest decline ever for a movie playing at over 3,000 locations; the worst belongs to the Friday the 13th remake, which fell 80 percent on this same weekend in 2009.Adapted from an immensely popular book and opening on Valentine's Day weekend, Fifty Shades of Grey was always going to be fairly front-loaded. Still, the movie's horrible reviews (25 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) and weak word-of-mouth ("C+" CinemaScore) surely contributed in some way.Fifty Shades has now earned $129.2 million,
