TV Review: ‘Galavant’

TV Review: ‘Galavant’
Owing a strong debt to Monty Python and a lesser one to spoofs like “When Things Were Rotten,” “Galavant” largely overcomes the challenges that have traditionally bedeviled TV musicals with rambunctious energy, cheeky lyrics and music, and — significantly — a half-hour format, thus condensing the need to create songs into a manageable task. Granted, this ABC series is so unlike anything else on the network’s lineup that the only lead-in the network could think of, ultimately, was itself, airing back-to-back episodes. Whether this inspired silliness has legs beyond musical-theater geeks and TV critics is anybody’s guess, but “Galavant” hits the ground running.

From the opening number (and good luck getting the Alan Menken-written title tune out of your head), “Galavant” serves notice that the derring-do will involve more word play than swordplay, as the narrator sings, “Now at last begins a true adventure. Epic, wild, a real butt-clencher.

12 Astonishing Time Facts To Mess With Your Head

Columbia Pictures

Time was more or less invented to mess with the way you think about things, but not in the way you’d expect it to. From the moment we can form any semblance of memory and cohesive thought, we think we have a grasp on the whole concept of time, but in truth, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

For example, should you ask any of my fellow twenty-somethings what it was like to be alive ten years ago, chances are that you’d end up lead on a nostalgic meander about how amazing the nineties were, with all of the great cartoons, toys and video games mentioned, and every possible reason why it was a million times better to be young back then. You can then watch with great pleasure as you break it to them that all of those things happened closer to twenty years ago,

10 Things Every Single Brotha Needs to KnowReal Advice for All the BrothasOne thing I pride myself on is listening. And since I started blogging at Essence just a few weeks ago, I've had a lot to listen to because...well, y'all have had a lot to say what stood out the most is that no matter the forum (Twitter, Facebook,Essence Community, etc), a common theme has been "Paul, we love your articles and advice but when are you going to give the Brothas some straight talk (no chaser)?" My response was always canned "Essence.com is primarily visited by women and therefore, I'm writing for women" but there was one comment that broke me out of the mold! 20 TV Pilots We Want To See

It’s pilot season in the Us. The time of year where the networks finance and film the best (well, most marketable) pilot scripts that grabbed their attention, with the hope of a few being strong enough to warrant a series commitment for 2011/12.

Many will be so heinous they’ll never air; some will impress execs enough that they’ll go to series, only to be axed amidst low ratings; a handful may be lucky enough to last a whole season on-air; and a few may even be popular with audiences and justify a second season. Well, you never know!

Below is a list of 20 pilots that have my interest right now, based solely on their premise or the talent involved. Obviously, it’s unfair to judge these pilots before we’ve seen them, but this is intended to be a quick overview of the positive and negative buzz surrounding them right now.
