Documentary Sales Are Surging, But What’s Driving the Competition?

You could call it the “Netflix effect.” With the rise of the global VOD giant and its increasingly voracious appetite for nonfiction films, the documentary industry is anticipating a busy spring season at the Tribeca Film Festival and Hot Docs, North America’s largest documentary festival and marketplace.

But it’s not just Netflix, say industry insiders. The number of active buyers for documentary films suggests there’s an enthusiasm for independent nonfiction cinema that goes beyond the VOD giant.

On the eve of Tribeca, three high-profile documentaries have already found buyers: National Geographic acquired the coal-mining expose “From the Ashes,” and Gravitas Ventures bought theatrical and streaming rights to two films already partnering with CNN Films: “Elian,” the story of Cuban child émigré Elian Gonzalez, and Impact Partners’ “The Reagan Show,” a freshly relevant archival-driven doc about the staging of the former President.

'Duke Nukem Forever,' A 'Veronica Mars' Movie Push And 'Machete'  In Today's Twitter-Wood
Wil Wheaton summed up the reactions of gamers everywhere today when 2K Games revealed at the Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle that a playable version of the epically delayed game "Duke Nukem Forever" would be playable for the show.

Others in Twitter-Wood were more concerned with movies, which is appropriate since that's where they make their money. Kristen Bell has been prodding at her followers to tell Warner Bros. they want to see a "Veronica Mars" movie, Ashton Kutcher checked out the "Family Guy" take on "Return of the Jedi," and Rainn Wilson discussed a remake of "The Rocker." Full Comic-Con 2010 Schedule for Saturday July 24th!

Hey Gang! Comic-Con International has unveiled the full schedule for Saturday July 24th! If you thought Thursday and Friday were insanely awesome and crazy, wait until you see what's planned for Saturday! There is a ton of great stuff going on that you're going to want to see! We've got all Marvel film panel with Thor, Captain America and The Avengers. There's also Green Lantern, Cowboys & Aliens, Sucker Punch, Harry Potter, Paul, and a ton of other great stuff!
