Critics Pick the Best Modern Shows Set in the ’80s, From ‘Stranger Things’ to ‘The Americans’

Critics Pick the Best Modern Shows Set in the ’80s, From ‘Stranger Things’ to ‘The Americans’
Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)

This week’s question: What’s the best modern show set in the ’80s? (To qualify, the show must have aired sometime 2000-present.)

Cha-Ching! Terry Crews Approves Woman’s Request to Put His Face on Her Debit Card
Terry Crews saved the day!

After a woman was told she couldn’t get a picture of Crews on her debit card without the actor’s permission, she asked for the Internet’s help getting his attention — and it worked.

It all started on Monday, when a woman named Darrel Kennedy announced on Twitter that she was ordering a new debit card with an image of Crews from his role as the very frugal father on Everybody Hates Chris — which she later joked would help inspire her to spend less money.

“Ordering a new debit card,” Kennedy wrote, alongside a

RelatedCable/Streaming Scorecard: What’s Renewed? What’s Cancelled?

The dramedy starred Vanessa Williams (Ugly Betty) as Maxine Robinson, the host and creator of a View-esque talk show, though her scandalous personal life — which included a sordid love affair, a murder cover-up, etc. — frequently overshadowed her on-air persona.

Maxine was joined at The Lunch Hour table by a parade of diverse co-hosts: war correspondent Nina Sandoval (played by Happyland‘s Camille Guaty), former child star Kibby Ainsley (Pretty Little Liars

Black Women Are an Integral Part of a New Era of TV, and It's Absolutely F*cking Necessary

  • BuzzSugar
Image Source: Netflix Recently, I was on a five-hour-plus flight back home and decided to check out the movie The Incredible Jessica James on Netflix (which I initially thought was the first season of a show and was heartbroken to find out I was wrong). It had everything I love in my movies - a quirky (but not annoying) protagonist, an awkward love interest, and that modern-millennial romance that makes us wince in secondhand embarrassment while wishing we had that kind of love.
