Comics on Film: 'Gambit' Just Can't Stay Lucky

Although it seems like 20th Century Fox has been trying to create some larger cinematic effort to feature the popular X-Man Gambit since at least the production of 2003's X2: X-Men United, things have just simply not been able to come together for the "Ragin' Cajun." It seemed as though 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine was intended to serve as the motion picture launching pad for two characters from the X-Men franchise: Gambit being one and Deadpool being the other. It of course ended up taking a while, but Deadpool hit the scene — and hit it big — in 2016, pushing the superhero genre to the limit with the fourth-wall-breaking "Merc with a Mouth." Though, where Deadpool survived his journey through development hell...

Gore Verbinski Exits as Director of Channing Tatum’s X-Men Spinoff ‘Gambit’

Gore Verbinski Exits as Director of Channing Tatum’s X-Men Spinoff ‘Gambit’
Gore Verbinski has decided against directing “Gambit,” Channing Tatum’s X-Men spinoff for Fox, sources said Thursday.

Verbinski left the project due to creative differences, sources told Variety.

Tatum is producing with partner Reid Carolin through their Free Association production company, along with Simon Kinberg. “Gambit” has been in development for several years at Fox with Rupert Wyatt and Doug Liman previously attached as directors. Wyatt departed in October 2015, while Liman left in August 2016.

Tatum closed his deal to star in and produce “Gambit” in 2015, shortly after appearing at Fox’s Comic-Con panel with the cast of X-Men.

The Gambit character was created in 1990 by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee. An expert card-thrower, the New Orleans native has the ability to mentally create, control, and manipulate kinetic energy. Also known as Remy LeBeau, his weapons include a staff and a deck of playing cards. Gambit first appeared on the big screen in 2009’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” portrayed

X-Men Spinoff Gambit Loses Director Gore Verbinski

The long-awaited Gambit solo movie has once again hit a snag on the way to production, this time losing director Gore Verbinski. The Ragin’ Cajun has always been a popular character within the X-Men universe, but has struggled for years to try and star in his own film. Despite being a regular fixture in animated versions of the X-Men, Gambit has to date only appeared in one feature, that being the poorly received X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Kingsman Director Matthew Vaughn Would Rather Work With DC Than Marvel

Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn previously helmed a movie based on Marvel characters with 2011’s X-Men: First Class, but for his next superhero outing, he wants to switch over to the DC side.

Vaughn was chatting on the IGN UK podcast when he explained his thoughts on why he would much rather work within the still-forming DC Extended Universe than the firmly established Marvel Cinematic Universes. As well as revealing that he’s currently in talks with DC over some mystery projects, Vaughn made clear he likes the comfort blanket of working with franchises that are on the ropes over those that are flying high.

“I do love the world of DC, and I’ve been talking to them at the moment about a few things. It’s more fun getting involved with franchises when they’re on the down, because then it’s easier to make a good film. So

Lizzy Caplan In Talks To Join Channing Tatum in Gambit

Lizzy Caplan (Master of Sex, The Disaster Artist) is in talks to join Channing Tatum in Fox's X-Men spinoff Gambit. Deadline reports the actress is seriously being considered to join the film that will be directed by Gore Verbinski from a script by Josh Zetumer. It's not clear who Caplan would play, but that she would have a significant role in the 20th Century Fox movie that is set to release on February 14, 2019.

Gambit was created by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee in 1990. Gambit/Remy LeBeau has the ability to charge matter with volatile kinetic energy, his favorite form of matter being playing cards, causing them to explode on impact. Gambit had a brief appearance in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, he was played by Taylor Kitsch.

Who do you think Caplin could end up playing?

Lizzy Caplan Lands Mystery Role In Fox’s Gambit Spinoff

Remy LeBeau is inching ever closer to his big-screen debut.

Variety is reporting today that Lizzy Caplan (Masters of Sex) has signed on to play the female lead in Gambit. She’ll join Channing Tatum for Fox’s X-Men spinoff, though details of her role are practically non-existent this early in the game.

20th Century Fox refused to comment at the time of Variety’s scoop, but that hasn’t stopped curious fans from linking Caplan’s casting with the seemingly vacant role of Bella Donna. Prior to Gambit‘s well-documented production woes – both Doug Liman and Rupert Wyatt had flirted with the spinoff, before Fox ultimately handed the keys over to Gore Verbinski – rumors began to circulate that Léa Seydoux (Spectre) had been offered the part.

Alas, those tentative plans unraveled soon after Gambit was hit with one setback after another, though a recent casting call has meant that
