Penney Finkelman Cox, Sandra Rabins Leave Original Force Animation (Exclusive)

Animation veterans Penney Finkelman Cox and Sandra Rabins are departing Original Force Animation, two years after helping the Chinese digital animation studio expand into Hollywood.

The duo announced their departure Friday, noting that they wish to return to producing after overseeing Original Force’s animated comedy “Duck Duck Goose,” starring Jim Gaffigan. Open Road will release the film on April 20.

“Launching Original Force Animation was a true global effort and we can’t wait for audiences to finally have the chance to see and appreciate the artistry behind ‘Duck Duck Goose,’ which is a very special film,” they said. “With Original Force up and running with a strong team in place, we chose to transition back to what we love most, which is producing high quality family projects.”

Finkelman Cox and Rabins have strong credentials within the animation world as key executives in launching Sony Pictures Animation and DreamWorks Animation. In a message to staff,

Why Sony Pictures Animation Still Needs a Big Hit – and Where It Might Come From

Annecy, France — Having sprinted to deliver toon movies this year in near record time, Sony Pictures Animation has a brace of new animated feature originals on deck for potential 2020/21 release, Kristine Belson, Sony Pictures Animation president announced at France’s Annecy Festival Thursday night, delivering a masterclass on Re-Shaping Sony Pictures Animation.

Four of the five projects which Belson went on to talk about in some detail, without implying they will be Spa’s only releases over 2020/21, are from first-time directors.

In contrast, Spa looks set not to release any movie at all in 2019, she added.

That may seem like an original move by a new Hollywood animation studio head, but it’s one way of confronting Spa’s major challenge. Producing animated features since 2006’s “Open Season,” Sony Pictures Animation has still to fire up a “Despicable Me” size franchise which can, as Belson out, provide a transformational moment,

Relativity, Storyoscopic set $200m slate fund

  • ScreenDaily
Ryan Kavanaugh’s Relativity Studios and Storyoscopic Films on Monday announced a joint venture whereby Storyoscopic will produce and finance approximately five or more projects a year.

Films produced under the joint venture and backed by what a source said would be at least $200m in production funding will release internationally via Relativity’s network of output partners and go through Relativity Europa Distribution (Red) in the Us.

Relativity launched Red in 2010 after it acquired Overture Films from John Malone’s Liberty Media and four years later EuropaCorp came on board in a reported $130m deal to acquire a 50% stake.

The venture comes as Relativity shifts its focus towards financing, producing and distributing family films and branded features with global appeal.

George Lee and Marcus Englefield, the duo behind 2D-to-3D conversion specialists Venture 3D, have worked with Hollywood and Chinese partners and launched Storyoscopic in 2013 to make family and genre films in the $15-50m range

Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Hart, Emma Stone and 319 others invited to vote for Oscar
Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.
