Robert Hiltzik Talks Sleepaway Camp's Arrival on Blu-ray

Robert Hiltzik's entire movie career has basically been in telling one story, that of Sleepaway Camp. Hiltzik wrote and directed the original, as well as Return to Sleepaway Camp. So who better to discuss Sleepaway Camp's move to Blu-ray from Scream Factory on May 27 than Robert Hiltzik himself.

Hiltzik recently sat down with Dread Central to talk about some interesting aspects of this horror staple, which was released in 1983. "I was in graduate film school at the time and I wanted to do my own film," Hiltzik said, when discussing the origins of the movie. "I wanted to figure out what would get me into the marketplace the easiest. The path of least resistance. I figured dramas and comedies would be very subjective, but everyone likes a good horror film. And I figured shooting a horror film in one location would keep the budget modest. So I thought

Sleepaway Camp remake “up in the air”, new sequel teased

Like many horror movies of the 1980s Sleepaway Camp has not escaped the possibility of a remake for today’s audiences. The movie has been in development and talked about for some time, but it looks like it may be on the backburner according to original director Robert Hiltzik.

During a Q&A session at a screening of the 1983 cult favourite slasher movie held by Fangoria and Scream Factory, when asked about the remake Hiltzik said, “There were several studios interested in remaking Sleepaway Camp. But they had their own vision for what that should be, and in the interest of protecting what worked about Sleepaway Camp, I decided to try to remake the film myself. But whether or not that will actually pan out is still in the air.”

But it looks like this isn’t the end for the adventures of Angela Baker. “I will say there is

‘Sleepaway Camp’ Getting Rebooted, Reminding You Not to Send Your Kids

Acknowledging our collective thirst for blood and ’80s nostalgia, producer Jeff Katz has acquired the rights to the 1983 cult classic Sleepaway Camp in order to reboot the summertime slasher for a whole new generation of awful teens. Deadline reports that Katz wants to “echo its legacy and the psychosexual elements that made the first pic such a memorable cult favorite,” while moving the story to a modern setting. So basically the same movie, but with different hair and texting. Not that anything should necessarily change about the story. Sleepaway Camp is a mercilessly bloody and brutal revenge flick that made Camp Crystal Lake look like it was for Cub Scouts. The film has spawned several direct-to-videos and one true sequel, 2008′s Return to Sleepaway Camp (also direct-to-video), so the franchise is in need of a good scrubbing. With original writer/director Robert Hiltzik, producer Michelle Tatosian and actress Felissa Rose, who

80s slasher Sleepaway Camp getting a reboot

It's been a while since we've had a decent entry in the slasher genre, but producer Jeff Katz is looking to inject some new blood into the sub genre by heading back to the 80s slasher well for a reboot of the cult classic Sleepaway Camp. According to Deadline, Katz "aims to reboot the Sleepaway Camp mythos in a modern setting with a new film series that echoes its legacy and the psychosexual elements that made the first pic such a memorable cult favorite."

Written and directed by Robert Hiltzik, Sleepaway Camp was released in 1983 and is mostly remembered for its twist ending, which we shan't give away here. The film spawned three sequels - 1988's Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers, 1989's Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland and 1992's Sleepaway Camp IV: The Survivor - before Hiltzik returned to reboot the series with Return to Sleepaway Camp, which was shot

Sleepaway Camp Gets Modern Day Reboot from Producer Jeff Katz

Cover your ears and hide your eyes, horror fans. Another classic is getting the reboot treatment. This time, its sexually confused slasher Angela who is being updated for a new generation, as New Line Executive Jeff Katz sets up a series based on the 1983 thriller Sleepaway Camp.

Katz has optioned the remake rights from the original movie's rights holders, which include Angela herself, actress Felissa Rose, the original's writer/director-turned-lawyer Robert Hiltzik and original producer Michele Tatosian. They will all return as producers of this new version, which should help lend the film some credibility.

The story follows the summer camp exploits of a young girl, tormented and bullied by her so-called friends. This results in a torrential blood bath of terror that is memorable for its truly shocking (at least at the time) twist ending. This new version will be updated for a modern setting. And it promises to

‘Sleepaway Camp’ To Re-Open Under Jeff Katz

Jeff Katz has plenty of credits under the title of associate, executive, and consulting producer, but he has 10 films in pre-production on his IMDb profile which all list him as producer. He can now add an 11th to that filmography in the form of Sleepaway Camp. The 30 year old cult classic, which went on to spawn 5 sequels including one released just last year (although that was made up from unfinished footage shot in 1992), followed a young girl sent away to summer camp only to find herself in a nightmarish situation. And we’re not just talking acoustic guitars around the fire place.

Katz will produce alongside the writer and director of the original and Return To Sleepaway Camp, Robert Hiltzik. It will be great to see the franchise on the big screen again, but horror reboots such as Halloween, Friday The 13th and A Nightmare On Elm Street have all

Films That Deserve a Remake Sleepaway Camp

Its time to take another look at a fading gem that could benefit from a contemporary reimagining. This time on deck weve got Robert Hiltziks oftdisregarded slasher Sleepaway Camp We dont need a return to the Return to Sleepaway Camp we need a quality reboot if for no other reason than to iron out the pronounced wrinkles that hindered the original. Turning Camp Arawak into a tight reasonable unit that plays host to say 1014 year olds with a solid half dozen twentysomething counselors will instantly lend a measure of believability to the film thats evaded the franchise up to this point.

Thoughts on... Return to Sleepaway Camp (2008)

Return to Sleepaway Camp, 2008.

Directed by Robert Hiltzick.

Starring Paul DeAngelo, Felissa Rose, Michael Gibney, and Jonathan Tiersten.

Synopsis:

Another summer and another sleepaway camp – but it seems someone has returned to spoil everyone’s fun.

It's been over twenty years since Sleepaway Camp (1983), so let's have a quick recap shall we? We first meet Angela, portrayed by Felissa Rose, as a quiet young girl struggling to fit in at a summer camp. One shocking and unforgettable twist later, and it's revealed Angela isn't quite who she seems, and is also responsible for the grisly murders that have seen certain snot-nosed brats covered in splatter. It's a rather good film, and like the majority of horror films that manage to turn a profit, a sequel was soon in development. A few years later, along comes Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers (1988) and Angela is back, this time portrayed by Pamela Springsteen.

Fright Interview – Jeff Hayes (Sleepaway Camp website)

Jeff Hayes started out by making a fan related website for the cult classic film ‘Sleepaway Camp‘. Thru the site, he was able to contact a number of cast & crew from all the films & conduct exclusive interviews for the site, which eventually led to a reunion at the Fangoria Weekend Of Horrors convention. The reunion itself led to the now in post-producion direct sequel to the original Sleepaway Camp, ‘Return To Sleepaway Camp‘, starring Vincent Pastore, Jonathan Tiersten, Paul DeAngelo & Isaac Hayes (no relation to Jeff). What do you remember about your first experiences getting into the horror genre?

My grandmother was quite the storyteller and as a little kid, she really made me believe in ghosts, witches, and all the things that go bump in the night. When you’re a little kid, your imagination has no boundaries and nothing tapped
