Ventana Sur: Mexico’s Huevocartoon, Arellano Take Horror Comedy Project ‘Grimalkin’ to Animation! (Exclusive)

Ventana Sur: Mexico’s Huevocartoon, Arellano Take Horror Comedy Project ‘Grimalkin’ to Animation! (Exclusive)
Huevocartoon Producciones, the Mexican studio behind Mexican and U.S. “Huevos” hit toon film saga, has teamed with storyboard artist Sant Arellano to bring to the market CGI animated feature project “Grimalkin.”

After winning an Ideatoon Award for best feature project at September’s Pixelatl Animation Festival in Mexico, “Grimalkin” has been invited to form part of Ventana Sur‘s Animation! Pitching Sessions.

With an estimated $6 million budget, “Grimalkin” has been developed at Huevocartoon Studios as an independent production which is, however, backed by the studio’s technical resources, according to Arellano, who is developing the project.

Targeting 8-12 years old children and family audiences, the horror comedy narrates how a domestic cat’s love for his family is tested when mischievous creatures invade the house, a foster home run by a loving young couple.

Being the only one with the ability to see them, the cat must confront the creatures before they take over the house

The importance of cats in horror cinema

Mark Harrison Oct 31, 2017

Want to enhance your horror movie? Make sure you sign up a cat...

This feature contains broad spoilers for several horror movies featuring cats, including Alien, Cat People, Drag Me To Hell, Fallen, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, Pet Sematary and The Voices.

The relationship between humans and cats over time has given way to a number of cultural impressions and outright superstitions. Ancient Egyptians associated them with gods. In the Middle Ages, they were linked with witches and killed en masse, which probably hastened the spread of the Black Plague through the rodent population. And in the modern day, it's interchangeably lucky or not if a black cat crosses your path.

Like anything with such a wide array of symbolic links, movies have presented cats as characters in different ways over the years. It's their abiding association with the supernatural – whether as an omen

Is the Nightmare Before Christmas a Halloween Movie or a Christmas Movie? Let's Settle This

The Nightmare Before Christmas is an iconic holiday movie, to be sure, but one thing about the stop-motion fantasy has never been quite clear: which holiday is it really about? Yes, a lot of the movie takes place in Halloween Town and main character Jack Skellington is the Pumpkin King, but there are also plenty of Christmas elements once Jack travels to Christmas Town. Is it a Christmas movie that happens to take place around Halloween, or is it a Halloween movie with strong Christmas themes? The debate between which is which has raged on among fans ever since the film's release in 1993 (in late October, it should be noted), so much so that director Henry Selick finally had to step into the fray. Selick, who went on to direct James and the Giant Peach and Coraline, participated in a Q&A at the Telluride Horror Show in Colorado back

Matthew Vaughn and Stardust, 10 years on

Mark Harrison Oct 19, 2017

We salute the 10th anniversary of Matthew Vaughn's wonderful Stardust...

“A philosopher once asked, 'Are we human because we gaze at the stars, or do we gaze at them because we are human?' Pointless, really. Do the stars gaze back? Now, that's a question.”

Comic book movies are Matthew Vaughn's speciality. Between Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class and the Kingsman franchise, he's been a constant and eclectic presence as these films have boomed, and if reports are to be believed, his next film could be about either Flash Gordon or Superman.

But going back even further than Mark Millar or Marvel, Vaughn's first comic book movie was his adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Stardust, which arrived in UK cinemas ten years ago this week. Before it was published as a novel in 1999, Gaiman conceived the postmodern fairy tale as a 'prestige' comic; the four-issue mini-series

Transformers: The Last Knight, which has seen its domestic theatrical run nearly come to a complete close, only made $128.8 million domestically, down from the fourth chapter's $245 million, and Dark of the Moon's $352 million. In olden days, this would spell disaster for a blockbuster franchise, but due to growing global markets where Transformers has had insane success, there will be no shortage of Transformers films in the coming years. In fact, Transformers is becoming a proper movie universe like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC Extended Universe, and Dark Universe, with the next film set to be the spinoff titled Bumblebee.

Today, in a press release, Paramount Pictures announced a new release date, new cast members, and a synopsis for the first of the spinoff films following Michael Bay's departure from directing the series -- as he promised. Production started today, with Bumblebee now

Why Sony Pictures Animation Still Needs a Big Hit – and Where It Might Come From

Annecy, France — Having sprinted to deliver toon movies this year in near record time, Sony Pictures Animation has a brace of new animated feature originals on deck for potential 2020/21 release, Kristine Belson, Sony Pictures Animation president announced at France’s Annecy Festival Thursday night, delivering a masterclass on Re-Shaping Sony Pictures Animation.

Four of the five projects which Belson went on to talk about in some detail, without implying they will be Spa’s only releases over 2020/21, are from first-time directors.

In contrast, Spa looks set not to release any movie at all in 2019, she added.

That may seem like an original move by a new Hollywood animation studio head, but it’s one way of confronting Spa’s major challenge. Producing animated features since 2006’s “Open Season,” Sony Pictures Animation has still to fire up a “Despicable Me” size franchise which can, as Belson out, provide a transformational moment,
