Universal Monsters: The Next Big Cinematic Franchise?

Tony Black on whether the Universal Monsters will deliver the next big cinematic franchise…

You all remember The Mummy, right? Brendan Fraser doing his best Harrison Ford impression while Arnold Vosloo pranced around in a gold nappy trying to hide his broad South African brogue. Rather good, wasn’t it? You may be surprised to learn it came out in 1999. Some readers of this may not have been born then! The Mummy Returns followed in 2001 and then The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in 2008 (but we don’t talk about that), with a Dwayne Johnson-starring The Scorpion King spin-off wedged in between. Had these films all came out a decade later, chances are they would have been much more of a cinematic universe, which of course are hot stuff these days thanks to Marvel’s successes in the superhero genre. Universal Pictures got into the act last year

“Doctor Who” Says Goodbye to Matt Smith and the Final Chapter for “Nikita”

Merry Christmas, everybody! With things slowing down for the holidays, I’m reviewing what’s coming up for Christmas week.

News

In his eulogy for Cory Monteith, Ryan Murphy explained his original plan for ending Glee, which EW has printed. Rachel will have become a Broadway star while Finn is happily teaching in Lima. “The very last line of dialogue was to be this: Rachel comes back to Ohio, fulfilled and yet not, and walks into Finn’s glee club. ‘What are you doing here?’ he would ask. ‘I’m home,’ she would reply. Fade out. The end.”

Need a suggestion for holiday binge-watching? ABC Family has put all ten episodes of The Fosters online. You can watch at ABC Family.com or on Hulu. It’s ridiculously compelling and worth the time.

Last Night on “Arrow”: The Final Count Down

Some of Oliver’s old playmates return. Moira’s gets the speediest trial ever. And many, many things are revealed.

One of the biggest criticisms I have heard about my beloved show is that Arrow is too much like a soap opera. Well, tonight pretty much proved that point and you know what? There’s nothing wrong with that. Growing up, following the adventures of The Avengers and The X-Men I came to the conclusion that they were soap operas. I mean, the high drama, the deaths and the miraculous returns to life, the dark secrets and torrid affairs, they outclassed my mom’s favorite soaps by miles.

Comic books aren’t just about people in funny costumes blowing sh** up. They’re stories about people, the heroic journey and human failings. Or, at least, the good ones are.

We begin our story tonight with the return of The Count.

'Arrow': Count Vertigo killed, Malcolm Merlyn comes back from the dead in 'State vs. Queen'

Wow.

"Arrow" packed how many revelations into a single hour of "State vs. Queen." The return of Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman) from the dead may have been the biggest but what about ...

The question of Thea's paternity? The importance of that Buddhist arrow? The death of Count Vertigo (Seth Gabel)?Whatever Sebastian Blood is up to?The Olicity of it all?

So many questions! What few answers we have can be found in this recap.

Last things first

To not talk about how Malcolm Merlyn is alive and fixing juries would be to ignore the arrow-shooting elephant in the room. Impressively, the villain even has an excuse for that:

"There are parts of the world where death is an illusion. I've been to one. I've become very convincing."

We don't know much about how Malcolm turned himself from an irritated billionaire into a lethal archer, but it does seem likely

“The Vivien Leigh Anniversary Collection”

Another Wtw, another Cohen Media Group release. Seriously, the good folks at Cohen have been doing an amazing job of finding relatively obscure classics and recent foreign films and polishing them like they’re beloved worldwide. They’re rivaling Criterion and Scream Factory as studios for which every release truly matters. Their latest is a collection of four early films from the legendary Vivien Leigh, an actress best-known for “Gone with the Wind” and a true Hollywood icon.

Stephen Colbert Calls Fox News’ Neil Cavuto ’11th Plague,’ ‘Imaginary Newsman’ (Video)
Stephen Colbert is uncharacteristically indecisive on the Syrian conflict. Fortunately, he can lean on Fox News and anchor Neil Cavuto as voices of reason. Though that reasoning is not necessarily coherent. Biblical literalists are interpreting the conflict in Damascus as a sign of the apocalypse and ultimate return of Jesus Christ, Colbert reported Wednesday. Cue Cavuto and one such guest, Armageddon enthusiast Joel Rosenberg, who imagines a scenario where anything is possible — including Rosenberg selling more copies of his book, “Damascus Count Down.” See video: Stephen Colbert Unfriends Vladimir Putin on Facebook Over Drudge Report Photo The “Colbert Report” host referred to Cavuto as the.
