Why John Wick director Chad Stahelski is the perfect choice to reboot Highlander

Tom Jolliffe on why John Wick director Chad Stahelski is the perfect choice to helm the Highlander reboot…

Stunt-man turned director Chad Stahelski has certainly had a good start to his burgeoning career as an action auteur. John Wick began what is now in the process of becoming a hugely successful franchise. Two films in, with a booming and expansive box office appeal. Next up for him is, all being well (as this project has long gestated and had directors come and go, year on year) is a remake of Highlander.

Now I should state two things now. Firstly, I love Highlander. The first film is an underrated piece of brilliance. From the visuals, to the music to the sheer style of it, Highlander is one of a kind. It then spawned four more films (none of which were good) and a TV show, as well as comics, anime and more.

French Beauty And The Beast Movie Premieres Graceful First Clip

You wait for a live-action rendition of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and suddenly two come along at once – only this time, there’s a twist.

Whereas before we’ve clocked eyes on Hollywood’s long-standing case of double vision – Mirror Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman spring to a mind as a recent example – this alternate take on the fairytale classic hails from French filmmaker Christophe Gans (Brotherhood of the Wolf, Silent Hill).

Finding Vincent Cassel and Spectre alum Léa Seydoux as the Beast and Belle, respectively, it appears that Gans is cooking up a darker interpretation of the famed legend. That’s judging by this most recent, haunting clip for Beauty and the Beast, which comes to us via The Film Stage and sees Cassel’s rampaging Beast deliver a chilling promise. Amélie star André Dussollier is also among the ensemble.

Watch: Vincent Cassel Desires a Life for His Rose in Exclusive Clip From ‘Beauty and the Beast’

Ahead of Disney’s live-action version next year, this month a new French adaptation of Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont‘s classic tale, Beauty and the Beast, will arrive. Helmed by Christophe Gans (Brotherhood of the Wolf, Silent Hill) and featuring a cast including Vincent Cassel as the titular Beast and Léa Seydoux as the Beauty, we’re pleased to exclusively premiere a clip today.

Filled with haunting imagery as we follow Cassel’s Beast encounters the father of Belle, who has stolen his precious rose for his daughter. In turn, he vows to kill his family, setting up quite a darker fable than what we imagine Disney will offer next year. Ahead of a release later this month, check out the exclusive clip below.

1810. After the wreck of his ships, a financially-ruined merchant (Andre Dussollier) exiles himself in the countryside with his six children. Among them is Belle (Lea Seydoux), his youngest daughter,

Beautiful and Vibrant Trailer for Léa Seydoux’s Beauty And The Beast Adaptation

Disney’s live-action version of Beauty and the Beast isn’t the only one that has been in development. Director Christophe Gans (Silent Hill, The Brotherhood of the Wolf) seems to have made a beautiful version of the story, and I was quite impressed by what I saw in the trailer that was released.

The the French film stars Vincent Cassel (Black Swan) as The Beast and Léa Seydoux (Spectre) as Belle. You all know the story the film is based on, and it’s explained that this is a “modern take” on the classic fairytale. According to the synopsis it was filmed using state-of-the-art technology.

The movie is set to open in theaters on September 23rd, and if you’re a fan of this story, it looks like a movie experience that you won’t want to miss out on. This is sure to be a visually sweeping cinematic adventure.

French Director Christophe Gans Offers An Alternative Take On Beauty And The Beast In First Trailer

All eyes in Hollywood may be trained on Bill Condon’s live-action Beauty and the Beast, which thrusts Emma Watson and Dan Stevens into the title roles, but across the pond French director Christophe Gans (Brotherhood of the Wolf, Silent Hill) is dreaming up his own interpretation of the fairytale classic, and today brings forth its very first trailer.

On this occasion, it is Vincent Cassel and Spectre star Léa Seydoux that assume the leading roles – Amélie star André Dussollier is also among the ensemble – and this first-look trailer unveils a romantic story that is slightly more lively and colorful than its Hollywood brethren. What’s more, unlike Bill Condon’s upcoming feature, here we see Vincent Cassel’s beast in all of his grotesque glory. But will this French version prove a hit with Na audiences given Disney’s oncoming release?

U.S. Trailer For ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Starring Léa Seydoux and Vincent Cassel

An undeniable trend in Hollywood is taking a classic fantasy story — more often than not by Disney — and turning them into live-action, darker blockbusters. It’s been going… alright. So here’s an idea: take the trend out of Hollywood, too. Volià! The first U.S. trailer has arrived for a version hailing from the roots of Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont‘s tale, Beauty and the Beast, and — can you guess it? — it’s live-action, darker version of the classic fable.

Again, this is not the one with Emma Watson slated for next year, rather this one is helmed by Christophe Gans (Brotherhood of the Wolf, Silent Hill) and features a cast including Vincent Cassel as the titular Beast and Léa Seydoux as the Beauty. Ahead of a fall release here in the United States, check out the trailer below.

Christophe Gans to direct competing 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea adaptation

It looks like we’re going to get another Armageddon / Dante’s Peak scenario, with Deadline reporting that Christophe Gans (Brotherhood of the Wolf) is set to direct an adaptation of Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea for the Chinese financiers Bliss Media.

Gans’ 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is scheduled to go into production in the fall, as it Bryan Singer’s own take on the classic 1870 sci-fi novel, which is being produced by 20th Century Fox. Meanwhile, Disney also has James Mangold (The Wolverine) attached to their own project, entitled Captain Nemo, although that is an origin story as opposed to a straight-up adaptation of the book.

According to reports, Bliss Media’s 20,000 Leagues is looking to cast two Chinese actors for lead roles, and will move the narrative to a Chinese setting; it will be multi-lingual, and is said to have an “East-meets-West visual aesthetic.”

Competing "20,000 Leagues" Films Coming

A few months ago filmmaker Bryan Singer got the green light for a new film adaptation of Jules Verne's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" at 20th Century Fox.

Now, Deadline reports that Bliss Media is launching a rival project in the works, and on which they say already has a deal in place to release in China. Christophe Gans ("Silent Hill," "Brotherhood of the Wolf") will direct the sci-fi adventure. Timing is interest here as well with both projects planning to begin pre-production this Fall.

This raises the question of how the competing project might affect Fox's release of their 'Leagues' in China, which will be the world's biggest moviegoing market by next year. Bliss isn't alone on their film either, with the likes of Wild Bunch, TF1 and Pathe all onboard to co-produce and distribute.

The Bliss version will also adapt the story for the local market with Ganes

Twin Peaks Cast Revealed! (And You’ll Never Believe some of the names!)

Twin Peaks Cast Revealed! (And You’ll Never Believe some of the names!)
David Lynch today unveiled the full cast list for his upcoming Showtime Twin Peaks follow-up — and is it a doozy. Two hundred and seventeen actors are credited, with both newcomers and returning thespians. Previously only Kyle MacLachlan had been confirmed as FBI Agent Dale Cooper.

Will Agent Cooper use a smartphone?

Let’s check out some of the more interesting names on the list, shall we?

Michael Cera: The erstwhile Scott Pilgrim has been keeping busy since his breakout role as George Michael Bluth on Arrested Development, but he usually sticks with comedy (Year One, Superbad). It’ll be interesting to see him tackle something so dark.

Will this hair get frizzier in perpetually damp Twin Peaks?

Trent Reznor: The Oscar-winning composer and Nine Inch Nails wizard has only two credits under his belt (aside from three video shorts): a 2000 Swedish thriller called Recycled and the 1987 Michael J. Fox

The Outre Eye of Daniel Xiii featuring Camino Director Josh C. Waller!

The Outre Eye of Daniel Xiii featuring Camino Director Josh C. Waller!
Hey creeps, as ya know I gave my two cents on the action adventure romp (with strong horror biz roots) Camino a few columns back (click here if the use of a search function is too much for ya). Anyway, I’m bringin’ this whole thing up because none other than that films die-rector Josh C. Waller just strolled into the Crypt o’ Xiii!

Famous Monsters. Welcome to my humble hovel Josh! How did Camino come about, and were there any ass-paining elements to the shoot?

Josh C Waller. The original idea came about while shooting The Boy in Colombia, but the project itself came together as a result of Daniel [Noah] and I having a last-minute gap in our production schedule and needing to fill that gap. The challenges that faced us aren’t necessarily ones unique to our film. They were the same types of obstacles that all independent filmmakers face.

How They Shot Guillermo del Toro's 'Crimson Peak' as Throwback Gothic Romance

How They Shot Guillermo del Toro's 'Crimson Peak' as Throwback Gothic Romance
Guillermo del Toro has always been great at morphing genres into his own deliciously baroque stew, and, with "Crimson Peak," he magnificently turns the Gothic romance and haunted ghost story on their heads in classical fashion. For cinematographer Dan Laustsen, who last worked with del Toro on "The Mimic," it was a refreshing return to a brightly-colored palette after a string of desaturated movies (including "Brotherhood of the Wolf"). More of a twisted love triangle between Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston and Jessica Chastain than supernatural horror, del Toro and Laustsen focused on contrasts to highlight good and evil, innocence and corruption, love and hate. Read More: "How Cannes and 'Crimson Peak' Changed Guillermo del Toro's Life" "Guillermo's approach was to do something very colorful and very dramatic and go old-fashioned," recalled Laustsen. "And I'm very much into this deep, deep shadowing but you...
