‘Blade Runner 2049,’ ‘Logan,’ and More: the Genre-Benders That Are Major Oscar Contenders

‘Blade Runner 2049,’ ‘Logan,’ and More: the Genre-Benders That Are Major Oscar Contenders
Every year, the studios take their best genre successes and try to push them beyond the technical ghetto. Oscar campaigners want to convince critics, guilds, and Oscar voters that their movie rises to the level of art. But it’s rare for fantasy, horror, thriller, action or comic-book movies to pass over to the Best Picture side.

When they do, it tends to be an exception like Peter Jackson’s fantasy “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. All three films scored Best Picture nominations and technical wins: “Fellowship” scored 13 nominations and wins for Makeup, Visual Effects, and Cinematography; “The Two Towers” earned six and won Sound Editing and VFX; and then came the ultimate triumph for the finale “The Return of the King”: a grand sweep of all 11 nominations including Best Picture. But while “Lotr” fell into the fantasy genre, it was boosted by the literary pedigree of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Should the Lord Of The Rings TV series include Tom Bombadil?

Juliette Harrisson Nov 24, 2017

Room for Tom Bombadil could easily be found in Amazon's Lord Of The Rings prequel TV series. Could this be his on-screen chance?

In a letter to the writer and poet Naomi Mitchison, who had been proof-reading The Lord Of The Rings for him, J. R. R. Tolkien described Tom Bombadil as an "enigma", "intentionally" so, and admitted that the character was "not an important person to the narrative" but added that he would not have left him in "if he did not have some kind of function". Bombadil represents, Tolkien suggested, "a natural pacifist view", a character who has access to immense power but chooses not to wield it, but rather to observe and not to participate in the wars around him. He had a symbolic importance to the overall story (not allegorical – a point both Tolkien and his friend C. S. Lewis were quite firm on,

The Lord of the Rings: Amazon Orders Multiple Seasons of New TV Series

Because the movies aren't quite long enough, Amazon has ordered The Lord of the Rings TV show to series. According to the press release, the series order is for a multi-season adaption of the Jrr Tolkien fantasy novel series, and some storylines will precede the first book, The Fellowship of the Ring. As reported last week, Warner Bros. had been shopping the series around and Amazon's Jeff Bezos was personally involved in the negotiations. Originally a sequel to Tolkien's novel, The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings book series is divided into three novels, The Fellowship of the Rings, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. The feature film trilogy, from director Peter Jackson, stars Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin, Cate Blanchette, John Rhys-Davies, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan, Orlando Bloom, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Miranda Otto,

The Lord of the Rings may live again as an Amazon TV series

  • JoBlo
I had serious doubts that J.R.R. Tolkein's "The Lord of the Rings" series could ever successfully make the transition to the big-screen, but what Peter Jackson was able to achieve with The Fellowship Of The Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return Of The King was absolutely astounding. It would certainly be tough to follow up that achievement, even Jackson himself wasn't quite... Read More...

'Lord of the Rings' TV Series in the Works

'Lord of the Rings' TV Series in the Works
A television series based on J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings is currently in the works, with Amazon Studios reportedly the frontrunner to bring the classic fantasy novel to the small screen.

Variety reports that the Tolkien estate has been shopping a new series about the 1954 novel to networks with help from Warner Bros. Television; the production company is also the home of New Line Cinema, which distributed director Peter Jackson's big-screen Lord of the Rings trilogy in the early 2000s.

Supergirl Season 3 Episode 4 Review – ‘The Faithful’

Martin Carr reviews the fourth episode of Supergirl season 3…

This is the most rounded episode of the season so far. Low on saccharine, thoroughly thought-provoking and packed with pathos alongside a good balance of set pieces. Touching on the repercussions of Kara’s actions over the last two years, it taps into back history rewarding audiences with an episode with room to breathe. Subtle uses of music provide emotional resonance rather than eliciting a false reaction, while Odette Annable’s Sam begins to Reign.

Featured fleetingly in episode one this single mother, CFO and work life juggler has become firm friends with Kara and Lena, while getting a foothold in our subconscious. Impactful without feeling pushy she is cleverly being set up carefully to have an even larger role in the coming months. What we get this week however is an understated examination of how religion can shape, pervert and influence people,

Harvey Weinstein Produced One of My Favorite Movies. Now What? (Column)

Harvey Weinstein Produced One of My Favorite Movies. Now What? (Column)
One of my favorite films is 2002’s “The Hours.” It is a melodramatic film in some ways, and hugely depressing, too. But at the age of 17 it was absolutely lyrical for me, and that sensibility has not faded for me in the nearly two decades since. But “The Hours” was crucial for other reasons, too. It’s not just a film I loved at a young age; it’s a film that prompted my entrée to critical thinking and awards-season reporting, as I tracked the movie’s progress from one dusty theater in my 24-screen multiplex to the Academy Awards. I was 17 years old when I first read the name Harvey Weinstein in the pages of my religiously perused Entertainment Weekly. I did not realize then, as I know now, that Weinstein was involved in four out of the five nominated Best Picture movies that awards season — “Gangs of New York,” his personal favorite,

‘The Simpsons’: ’Game of Thrones’ to ‘Lord of the Rings,’ Every Fantasy Reference in the Packed Premiere
Even though “Game of Thrones” fans are in for a very long hiatus before its final season, “The Simpsons” filled the void by paying homage to HBO’s fantasy epic on Sunday night. The animated series’ Season 29 premiere is set in an alternate world called “The Serfsons,” in which fantasy references abound from popular TV shows, movies, novels, video games, and RPGs.

First, it’s important to make the distinction between any general Medieval or fantasy reference and an actual homage to actual properties like “Lord of the Rings” or “Game of Thrones.” Even though J.R.R. Tolkien is accepted as the father of modern fantasy (high fantasy specifically), he did not invent the genre, and therefore many hallmarks of the genre – such as flying fire-breathing dragons – seen in the episode are not credited to any particular source.
