How Pedro, 'Ellen,' 'Will & Grace' and other gay TV icons helped pave the way for gay marriage
Whether or not you agree with today's Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage(*), there can be no argument that this was a historic day in America. (*) And as a reminder, this blog is not the place to debate the merits of that ruling. In watching the news coverage of the decision, reading the official Court opinion and the four dissenting ones, it was hard not to think of the not insignificant role TV played in paving the way for this decision. This was a case that wound its way through the courts, just as the wave of state-level cases did over the last few years, and it involved lawyers and activists and politicians and judges. But it also involved changing attitudes across the country about gay people and same-sex relationships, and that's where pop culture in general and TV in particular come into play. TV shows come into our homes (and these days,

Inside Ellen’s Empire: How the Queen of Daytime Is Conquering Hollywood
When Ellen DeGeneres came out as gay in 1997, J.C. Penney dropped her faster than its prices during a blowout sale. Along with Chrysler and Wendy’s, the retailer succumbed to pressure from the American Family Association and Christian conservative groups, pulling ad dollars from her sitcom “Ellen.” Fast-forward 18 years, and DeGeneres has not only been hired as J.C. Penney’s spokeswoman (as well as American Express and CoverGirl), she’s managed to dance her way to the top of the TV industry, becoming one of Hollywood’s most powerful and likeable players. “From the outside, it probably appears like a spontaneous burst of.

Ellen DeGeneres To Host 86th Academy Awards

The Academy Awards organizers are really on the ball this year. Avoiding speculation, rumor and debate, they’ve gone ahead and announced the host for the 86th Academy Awards: Ellen DeGeneres.

Ellen DeGeneres has already hosted the Oscars once before, for the 79th Academy Awards back in 2006. That was the year The Departed won Best Picture, in case you wanted a reference point. She did quite well then and hopefully she’ll be on point now, seven years on.

The Academy Awards have seen a lot of ups and downs in recent ceremonies, from broadcasts that went far too long, musical numbers that went nowhere (or offended as many people as possible), and hosts that were less than award-worthy. I don’t think any of us will forget the disastrous co-hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway any time soon. Bringing DeGeneres back will help to expand viewership – she has a

LOLesbian: "We Killed" and the gay women of comedy

Tags: SNLWe KilledbooksBook ReviewsEllen DeGeneresSandra BernhardLily TomlinIMDb

It's crazy to read a book like Yael Kohen's We Killed and know that people still make statements like "Women aren't funny." The newly released oral history of women in comedy over the last 50 years is a reminder that not only are women hilarious, but they are smart, persistent and unwilling to back down when faced with the sexism and adversity they've been dealt whether it's been in comedy clubs, writing rooms or late night TV shows.

Comedy is not just entertainment: It has the power to enlighten and educate, no matter how subtle it might be presented. What you'll get from We Killed is a sense of how progressive women have proven to be, from the pioneers like Phyllis Diller and Elaine May to the alternative comics of the '90s like Janeane Garofalo up through today's boundary-smashing Sarah Silverman, for whom no topic is untouchable.

Jenna Hager Gives Ellen Some Wedding Advice

John McCain may disapprove of Ellen DeGeneres and partner Portia DeRossi's intentions to marry, but there's another Republican who is only too happy to help with the upcoming nuptials: Jenna Hager. The first daughter, who herself got hitched May 10 at the Bush family spread in Crawford, Texas, appears with her mother, Laura Bush, on next Wednesday's The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Among Jenna's topics with the host (the show was taped Thursday) is the wedding at the ranch, with the bride even showing off snapshots from the reception. Observes DeGeneres: "So, the ranch was a great place to get married

Ellen & Portia to Tie the Knot!

Ellen DeGeneres plans to wed longtime girlfriend Portia de Rossi, she announced during a taping of her show Thursday. In the episode, airing Friday (the news was first reported by Tmz), DeGeneres revealed the big news and told the crowd, "I'm very excited." The announcement immediately followed the news that California's Supreme Court struck down a law banning gay marriage.De Rossi, 35, was reportedly in the studio when DeGeneres – who just celebrated her 50th birthday – broke the news. In what's sure to be a controversial decision, the California's Supreme Court ruled that people have a fundamental "right to marry" the

Mariah Tells Ellen She'll Have Another Wedding

Mariah Carey, who recently wed Nick Cannon in a small ceremony in the Caribbean, says the pair plan to get married again. "Instead of trying to be like, 'you're invited, but, shhh, don't tell anybody,' we're just going to have another [wedding] next year," Carey told Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show Tuesday. "[Nick's] plan is to have one every year." Those who attended the first beachside ceremony, she continues, were, "mainly people there to do my hair and help me with the dress." Both Carey and Cannon only brought along three friends each because, "we wanted to be on the

Ellen, Regis + Barbara Fight For Top U.S. Daytime Emmy

  • WENN
Ellen, Regis + Barbara Fight For Top U.S. Daytime Emmy
Ellen DeGENERES, Regis Philbin and Barbara Walters are the U.S. TV heavyweights who will battle for the big prize at June's Daytime Emmy Awards.

DeGeneres' self-named talk show has landed her a Best TV Host nomination up against Live! frontman Philbin and Walters and her The View co-hosts.

DeGeneres' top-rated show will also compete for the Best Daytime Entertainment Show along with The View and The Rachael Ray Show when the Emmys are handed out on 10 June.

Dr. Phil and The Tyra Banks Show are the favourites to land a Best Informative Talk Show honour, while the contenders for Outstanding Daytime Drama are the casts of General Hospital, Guiding Light, One Life to Live and The Young and the Restless.

CBS, 'Restless' lead Daytime Emmy noms

NEW YORK -- CBS and The Young & the Restless lead nominations for the 35th annual Daytime Emmy Awards.

CBS netted 56 nominations when they were announced Wednesday, 17 for "The Young & the Restless," which was nominated for best daytime drama among others. PBS received 50 nominations, including 13 for Sesame Street. Two other programs, Guiding Light and One Life to Live, also received 13 nominations, while As the World Turns received 12.

The Daytime Emmys will be handed out on June 20 from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood and televised on ABC.

ABC received 39 nominations, including seven for ABC's chatfest The View.

The View, which broadcast the announcement live Wednesday morning, came away with nominations for talk show/entertainment and for its co-hosts, among other categories. The View has only won once for best show, in 2003. Ellen has won every year since 2004 and last year won a total of six Daytime Emmys.

But this year's split of the talk-show category into two awards could shake things up. Ellen, Rachael Ray and The View are vying in talk show/entertainment category; talk show/informative noms are for PBS' A Place of Our Own; Dr. Phil and The Tyra Banks Show. Syndicated shows received 28 nominations for Daytime Emmys.

'Legal' maneuver: Broch upped
There has been a change behind the scenes at Boston Legal, David E. Kelley's comedic drama for ABC.

Executive producer Janet Leahy has left the series, produced by David E. Kelley Prods. and 20th Century Fox TV.

Lawrence Broch, who served as consulting producer on the show for the past two seasons, has been named co-executive producer and head writer.

In addition to creator/executive producer Kelley and Broch, the writing team for Boston Legal next season includes consulting producers Phoef Sutton and Susan Dickes, producer Craig Turk, executive story editors Sanford Golden and Karen Wyscarver and story editor Corinne Brinkerhoff.

Boston Legal, a spinoff of The Practice that stars James Spader and William Shatner, returns for a fourth season in the fall. Although not the ratings hit like its predecessor, it has developed a devoted core group of fans.

Broch's credits include the comedies Ellen, Roseanne, Norm and George Lopez.

He is repped by WMA.
