Great Months in Box-Office History: October 1992

Great Months in Box-Office History: October 1992
Twenty-five years ago this month — amid the general cultural vacuum of the early '90s — moviegoers, at least, had something going for them.

Glengarry Glen Ross — perhaps the greatest acting clinic (men-only category) ever committed to film — kicked off the month on the same weekend as The Mighty Ducks — perhaps, uh, well, certainly the only film ever to have a professional sports team named after it.

Then came Under Siege, which was a record-breaking hit for Warner Bros. and cemented Steven Seagal's place on the action star A-list alongside Arnold, Sly, Bruce and Jcvd (while also featuring the...

Hollywood’s Underage Sexual Abuse Problem: 5 Shocking Injustices From ‘An Open Secret’

Hollywood’s Underage Sexual Abuse Problem: 5 Shocking Injustices From ‘An Open Secret’
An Open Secret” sounds like the perfect title for a brand-new documentary addressing the entertainment industry’s sexual harassment and assault epidemic, which in recent weeks has uncoupled Harvey Weinstein, Roy Price, and Andy Signore from their companies (and caused James Toback, President George H.W. Bush, Oliver Stone, Ben Affleck, and Mark Halperin to confront their own allegations). However, the documentary — which focuses on the abuse male managers, agents, and publicists inflict on young, male clients — premiered at Doc NYC in November 2014 and had a small release the following June (IndieWire awarded it an A-).

Despite its current 93 percent Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, director Amy Berg — who’d previously investigated sexual abuse in “Prophet’s Prey” and “Deliver Us from Evil,” for which she earned a 2007 Best Feature Documentary Oscar nomination — was unable to find a distributor. “An Open Secret” producer Gabe Hoffman claims the film was even accepted,

Brad Pitt Is the Least Profitable Actor in Hollywood

Brad Pitt Is the Least Profitable Actor in Hollywood
It's hard to gauge who the most popular star in the world is, and by all accounts, that person is probably from India, not Hollywood. But there is no denying that Brad Pitt is one of the biggest names on the planet. And you'd expect that he'd turn more of a profit at the box office. But as it turns out, a new study shows he's the least profitable star in Hollywood.

He's not alone. A few other big name actors failed to turn a pretty penny when it came to their movies over the last thirty years. Analysts from PartyCasino, a unit of the Gvc gaming group, have done an intensive break down and study, which proves that Brad Pitt only brings in ten cents for every dollar spent on one of his movies. Coming in behind him is Johnny Depp, who only manages to pull in twenty cents for every dollar.

Emilio Estevez Crowned Hollywood’s Most Profitable Actor

Data compiled by Party Casino has revealed the most and least profitable stars in Hollywood, and Emilio Estevez has landed top of the pile.

Estevez, who ruled the roost during the ’80s and ’90s thanks to roles in The Breakfast Club, St. Elmo’s Fire and The Mighty Ducks, enjoyed the best return for any male actor who starred in at least 10 films between the years of 1980 and 2017. To reach their somewhat surprising conclusion, Party Casino analyzed those box office numbers to determine that Emilio Estevez generated $6.70 for every $1 spent on the actor’s movies.

Jean-Claude Van Damme, meanwhile, ranked second with $4.20 for each dollar, with Mel Gibson ($3.50), Tyler Perry ($3), and Dudley Moore ($3) rounding out the top five. On the lower end of the scale, Brad Pitt was deemed Hollywood’s least profitable actor and returned only 10 cents for every $1 spent, followed by Johnny Depp (20 cents), Robert De Niro (24 cents

Sunshine review – basketball and racial tensions collide in standout Australian drama

Anthony Lapaglia’s school-of-hard-knocks coach brings star power to this superb new series set in outer-west Melbourne

Remember that movie or TV show with the jaded, world-weary, what-have-i-got-to-live-for coach who reluctantly agrees to mentor a team of ill-disciplined rascals? Remember how sport becomes a metaphor for life, and the determination, hard slog and gradual improvement of the kids inspires in this broken person a new raison d’être?

Of course you do, and of course you don’t. You do because this archetype is almost as familiar as the absentminded professor or the whisky priest. You don’t because you’ve witnessed so many incarnations of this character – from the stubby-clutching Morris Buttermaker (Walter Matthau and later Billy Bob Thornton) in Bad News Bears to the smug Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez) in The Mighty Ducks – that they blur together as one big, whistle-blowing splotch in the memory.

'The Mighty Ducks': THR's 1992 Review
On Oct. 2, 1992, Buena Vista released The Mighty Ducks, an underdog story about a powerhouse lawyer who's sentenced to community service and ordered to coach an inept youth hockey team. The film was panned by critics but a success with its young target audience. It also remains the only film ever to have a professional sports franchise named after it. The Hollywood Reporter's original review is below.

The Bad News Bears on ice is the basic pitch line for The Mighty Ducks, a rollicking Buena Vista release that should take in some tidy, if not mighty, bucks among those...

‘Gay of Thrones’: How Funny or Die Recaps ‘Game of Thrones’ in Less than 24 Hours Every Week
Moulin Rouge” or “The Mighty Ducks”? That was one of the toughest decisions being made Sunday night at the Funny or Die offices in Los Angeles, where the cast and crew behind the “Game of Thrones” recap series “Gay of Thrones” had gathered, as they had for the past four weeks this summer, to watch the HBO blockbuster drama and (lovingly) tear it apart.

By 5 p.m. the following day, the latest installment was online — an awe-inspiring turnaround, given the Emmy-nominated series’s dense implementation of clips, visual jokes and actor-driven improv, cut down to a tight runtime that rarely exceeds five minutes.

Curious about what it takes to make this possible in less than 24 hours, IndieWire asked to get a peek behind the scenes of the show’s production this year.
