‘Aladdin’ Turns 25: Creators on the Real Beginning of the Disney Renaissance

‘Aladdin’ Turns 25: Creators on the Real Beginning of the Disney Renaissance
Before Disney’s animated blockbuster “Aladdin” had its premiere in Japan, directors Ron Clements and John Musker were told not to worry if the audience didn’t laugh.

And it wasn’t because the Japanese performer who dubbed Robin Williams’ shape-shifting Genie didn’t capture the actor’s brilliant off-the-wall comedic performance.

“They tell you ahead of time, ‘don’t worry because the audience won’t laugh, because a Japanese audience doesn’t laugh,”’ noted Clements. “They just sit respectfully.”

But they did laugh at Genie, who turns into everybody from Ed Sullivan to William F. Buckley to former talk show host Arsenio Hall.

“Probably the biggest laugh in the whole screening was when he turned into Arsenio Hall and did his ‘Woof, woof, woof’ with his arm,” said Clements. “I was asking somebody afterward about that and why it got such a big laugh. They said ‘Oh, we loved it when the Genie turned into Julia Roberts

Jason Mraz Finds Making His Broadway Debut in ‘Waitress’ Less Grueling Than Going on Tour (Exclusive)

Jason Mraz Finds Making His Broadway Debut in ‘Waitress’ Less Grueling Than Going on Tour (Exclusive)
“It’s a good gig,” Jason Mraz says of what he’s calling a “Broadway Retreat,” making his acting and Broadway debut as Dr. Pomatter in a 10-week limited run of Waitress on Broadway.

The singer, who officially took his first bow on Nov. 3, tells Et that eight performances a week onstage at the Brooks Atkinson Theater in New York City is “less grueling” than a typical touring schedule. “I am not leaving town or changing venues. I am not onstage for three hours singing 25 songs. Broadway, in a sense, is easier, at least currently in the role that I’m in.”

Based on the 2007 film starring Keri Russell, Waitress tells the story of Jenna Hunterson, currently played by Betsy Wolfe, a pregnant pie maker in an unhappy marriage who falls in love with her married gynecologist, Dr. Pomatter. “Suddenly this patient comes along who disarms him and has him step out of his comfort zone; a boring

Julia Roberts Talks Raising Her Kids: 'Some People Confuse Unconditional Love With Spoiling'
Julia Roberts may be America's sweetheart and an Oscar winner, but she's also a devoted mother of three who knows the value of discipline.

The 50-year-old actress talks about raising her kids -- 12-year-old twins Hazel and Phinnaeus and 10-year-old son Henry -- in the December issue of Good Housekeeping and how nothing is "stronger than gentleness."

"I think some people confuse unconditional love with spoiling. None of my kids would think I have a problem with that distinction," Roberts expresses. "I do love them unconditionally, and I try, when they do something wrong, to say, 'This doesn’t change the amount of love in this house for you, but you've got to do your homework.' Because I think that also makes a child feel safe."

The Pretty Woman star also knows the value of being a kind person and how we can all work to be better humans in general.

‘God’s Own Country’ Director and Stars on Making a Romance for the Ages

Judging from the precision of the characters and the seamless storytelling at hand, it’s incredible to believe that God’s Own Country is director Francis Lee’s debut feature. His story of brooding farmer Johnny (Josh O’Connor) and Gheorghe (Alec Secareanu), the Romanian worker he falls in love with, have all the makings of a legendary romance, something the Brontë’s would’ve written in less oppressive times. Set in misty Yorkshire, the film chronicles the tender romance as Johnny, who has no problem conquering men and women, meets his match in the soft spoken but confident Gheorghe. O’Connor and Secareanu light up the screen together turning short glances and shy smiles into sweeping moments that make this a romance for the ages.

Lee’s film is made even richer by the geographical and societal context he gives it, this isn’t a film about whether the
