Steven Spielberg: Iron Giant Is Major Part of ‘Ready Player One’

Steven Spielberg: Iron Giant Is Major Part of ‘Ready Player One’
Steven Spielberg wasn’t sure he was the right director for “Ready Player One,” his upcoming science-fiction epic.

During a panel discussion at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, Spielberg said that after reading Ernest Cline’s best-selling novel about a virtual reality-addicted future, his first thought was “They’re going to need a younger director.”

Spielberg was joined onstage by Cline and the film’s stars, Tye Sheridan, Ben Mendelsohn, and T.J. Miller. Fans in Hall H were treated to a trailer for a film that overflowed with shout-outs to several geek staples. The gaming world that “Ready Player One” depicts enables players to interact with characters from pop culture staples from the ’80s and ’90s, such as “The Iron Giant,” “Tron,” “Akira,” “Lord of the Rings,” “Back to the Future,” and “Nightmare on Elm Street,” to name a few.

‘Tron’ at 35: Star Jeff Bridges, Creators Detail the Uphill Battle of Making the CGI Classic

‘Tron’ at 35: Star Jeff Bridges, Creators Detail the Uphill Battle of Making the CGI Classic
Disney’s “Tron,” the granddaddy of CGI animated films, celebrates its 35th anniversary on July 9. And over the decades, the sci-fi adventure has spawned video games, the 2010 movie sequel “Tron: Legacy,” a high-tech ride at Shanghai Disney, an animated series, and even talk of a possible third sequel with Oscar winner Jared Leto in early talks to star.

And “Tron” has influenced CGI animators worldwide. In fact, Disney/Pixar’s John Lasseter has acknowledged that “Without ‘Tron,’ there would be no ‘Toy Story.’”

But back in 1982, not only did “Tron” receive mixed reviews from critics and audiences, Hollywood didn’t welcome the film, which paid homage to “The Wizard of Oz” and “Metropolis,” with open arms.

“It certainly wasn’t the reaction we expected,” said Steven Lisberger, who wrote and directed the film starring Jeff Bridges as computer games creator who finds himself zapped inside a power hungry Master Control program after he hacks into the mainframe

Tron: Legacy Sequel Moves Forward With New Writer

  • ScifiMafia
Walt Disney PicturesTron: Legacy grossed more than $400 million across the globe this past winter and even though it wasn’t seen as a smashing blockbuster hit, there is sufficient interest in the digitized world that a sequel is in the works. Even though the price tag involved in making Legacy was pretty high, the R&D undertaken for Legacy will make the sequel less development-intensive.

Originally, it was thought that Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, both writers on Legacy (and Lost), were to return to work on this sequel, but the duo are currently occupied with Once Upon A Time, a fairy tale television series they created, airing on ABC this fall.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Disney has tasked David Digilio (Traveler, Eight Below) to write the next installment in the Tron franchise. Digilio is also involved with Showtime with a project called Last H.O.P.E.

'Tron 3' Finds a New Writer

Garrett Hedlund in "The Next Day"

Photo: Walt Disney Pictures The same way I'm interested to see where Columbia Pictures may talk Angelina Jolie's Salt franchise in a sequel, I am also curious to see what Disney may come up with when it comes to a sequel to the lackluster Tron: Legacy, and now both franchise have one more thing in common: the hiring of a poor screenwriter for the potential sequel.

Just as we learned yesterday that Kurt Wimmer (Ultraviolet) will return to script Salt 2, The Hollywood Reporter brings word today that David Digilio has been tapped to write the screenplay for Tron 3. Digilio's lone feature screenplay is Disney's dreadful Eight Below, the 2006 dog-sledding scientist feature starring Paul Walker directed by Frank Marshall (Congo), and now, in his return to feature films, he's taking over for Legacy screenwriters Adam Horowitz and Adam Kitsis, who apparently are too busy

New Writer Hired to Pen Sequel to Tron: Legacy

While rumors of a sequel to last year’s Tron: Legacy have permeated ever since that film’s release, it looks like Disney may finally be moving forward with a follow-up. Though Tron: Legacy did over $400 million, it was a very expensive flick (with a very expensive marketing campaign) and that amount wasn’t exactly the home run the Mouse House was looking for, so they’ve taken their time in deciding whether to move forward or not. Well now, Heat Vision reports that David Digilio (Eight Below) has been tapped to start writing a sequel to Legacy. That film’s writers, Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, were expected to return if a follow-up came to fruition, but apparently they've been sidetracked by their ABC fairy tale series debuting on ABC this fall, Once Upon a Time. Tron: Legacy set up a possible villain for a sequel with its cameo

Tron: Legacy Sequel Moving Forward at Disney With New Screenwriter

Walt Disney Pictures has tapped scribe David Digilio to pen the third installment of their popular Tron film franchise. Tron: Legacy, a direct sequel to Disney's 1982 sleeper hit Tron, stars Garrett Hedlund, Jeff Bridges, Olivia Wilde and Michael Sheen. It was released theatrically in 3D and IMAX 3D on December 17th, 2010 to mixed reviews but financial success. The film followed Sam Flynn (Hedlund), a rebellious 27-year-old, is haunted by the mysterious disappearance of his father Kevin Flynn (Bridges), a man once known as the world's leading video-game developer. When Sam investigates a strange signal sent from the old Flynn's Arcade -- a signal that could only come from his father-- he finds himself pulled into a digital world where Kevin has been trapped for 20 years. With the help...

Mosaïques, London

This festival of world culture offers a different perspective to British equivalents, leaning as it does towards France's ties with Africa, the Middle East and south-east Asia. A case in point is French-Tunisian guest of honour Abdellatif "Couscous" Kechiche, whose Black Venus finds rich material in the life of 19th century "Hottentot Venus" Saartjie Baartman. There's also Berlin film festival winner A Separation, and from south China, The Rice Paddy, set among the tribal Dong people. Among documentaries are Ethiopian sounds in Abyssinie Swing and Mexican circus thrills in Circo.

Jeff Bridges, sick of critical acclaim, to star in a movie about ghost cops

  • Nerve
Do you ever feel like things are going so well in your life that you just want to eat Big Macs until it hurts, sleep all day, and miss work? Well, friends, that's called self-sabotage. And Jeff Bridges is apparently down with it. Coming off True Grit and Crazy Heart (and, okay, Tron), Bridges' next project has been announced, a movie called R.I.P.D. What, you ask, is this? Good question. According to The Huffington Post, it's a movie adaptation of a graphic novel by Peter Lenkov: "R.I.P.D." features the story of a police officer, who, slain in the prime of his career, is recruited to join the Rest In Police Department, the ghost world police force. He signs up for 100 years duty in exchange for the chance to find his killer. Bridges would play his ghost police partner, an [...]

It's one thing to watch an eye-popping scene in a CG-laden blockbuster and go, "How the heck did they do that?" It's quite another to have the filmmakers behind those scenes pull back the cinematic curtain and explain what it took to put the footage up onscreen.

That's exactly what we've been doing for some of the biggest movies in Hollywood, from a cinematographer breaking down that epic hallway fight scene in "Inception," to a visual-effects supervisor detailing the digital creation of a young Jeff Bridges in "Tron," to a director walking us through how to build a scream-inducing sequence in "Paranormal Activity 2."

Now we turn our attention to "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" and

Outland Review

Recently released for the Xboxla and forthcoming for the Psn, Outland is a beautifully surreal 2D platformer that manages to both subvert and fulfil expectations. At its core, Outland is a side-scroller that harks back to the old days of gaming where the simple pleasures of running, jumping and sliding across the screen was all the entertainment a gamer needed. In today’s crowded, story-driven triple A market of games, Outland is decidedly refreshing. On the surface, it’s immediately comparable to the old Prince of Persia games, but it's closer to Super Metroid and Castlevania than either of these; there are numerous occasions throughout the gameplay when you’ll be required to go back to a level you’ve already visited, opening up doors that were previously unavailable to you. Unlike Metroid and Castlevania, though, navigating your way back to these points is straightforward thanks to a nifty teleportation ability,

Jeff Bridges To Fight Crime, Undead Style

  • TheMovieBit
I've never met anyone who didn't love Jeff Bridges. And why wouldn't they? He's The Dude! And Rooster Cogburn! And he created Tron! And was in K-Pax! Okay, forget the last one, everybody has to pay the bills. He's been on a very welcome roll lately since his Oscar success, and that doesn't look like subsiding. Deadline are now reporting that he's being lined up to replace Zack Galifinakis (who has about four thousand potential films lined up) in R.I.P.D. - which stands for Rest In Peace Department. Amazing. Ryan Reynolds is leading the cast of this film which centres on a recently dead officer who, in return for 100 years of serving with R.I.P.D, can track down who killed him. He's accompanied by another officer who has been dead for hundreds of years, and presumably this is the Galifinakis role that I'd say will be rewritten a

Jeff Bridges Eyes 'R.I.P.D.' And Guy Pearce Seeks 'Prometheus' In Today's Casting Call

Jeff Bridges Eyes 'R.I.P.D.' And Guy Pearce Seeks 'Prometheus' In Today's Casting Call
Talk about having some major range: Oscar-winner Jeff Bridges will go from "Crazy Heart" to "Tron" to "True Grit" to, possibly, the zombie comedy "R.I.P.D."

According to Deadline, Bridges is in talks to star opposite Ryan Reynolds in the movie about a squad of undead police officers. The comedy, which is based off of a comic, has Robert Schwentke at the helm. If Bridges were to step in, he would be taking over for Zach Galifianakis, who dropped out from the project due to scheduling issues. Honestly though, who wouldn't abide by the law if The Dude was on the undead force?!

Check out the rest of today's biggest casting news from Hollywood and find out who might be appearing in "Prometheus" and which Academy Award-winner will be team up once again with Sasha Baron Cohen!

Jeff Bridges could join Ryan Reynolds in R.I.P.D.

  • TotalFilm
Jeff Bridges could join Ryan Reynolds in R.I.P.D.
Jeff Bridges could be about to replace Zach Galifianakis in the movie adaptation of comic book R.I.P.D. The Tron star is currently in negotiations to join the film after Galifianakis was forced to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. If Bridges signs the dotted line, he’d join Ryan Reynolds in the supernatural comedy, which follows undead police officers who are tasked with keeping the underworld in check. With Red’s Robert Schwentke attached to direct, it seems the long-gestating project is really just waiting for Reynolds to...

Jeff Bridges Could Replace Zach Galifianakis In R.I.P.D.

Zach Galifianakis and Jeff Bridges: both popular white male actors who rock facial hair better than just about anybody else, but that's pretty much the end of their similarities. And yet, now that Galifianakis has dropped out of the supernatural cop comedy R.I.P.D., he may be replaced by Bridges. Because, hey, any movie is better with Bridges in it, right? According to Deadline Universal is negotiating with Bridges to take the role in the film, which will be directed by Red's Robert Schwentke. It's unclear exactly when production might start given that Warner Bros. might wrestle Reynolds back to the lot for a Green Lantern 2 at any moment, but Bridges is probably in no hurry-- he's starring in the fantasy young adult film The Seventh Son and may or may not have something to do with a Tron 3 that may or may not get made, but other ...

‘Tron: Legacy’ Blu-ray Review – Visual Splendor and a Great Daft Punk Score to Boot

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that the majority of people in the market for the Tron: Legacy Blu-ray set weren’t blown away in theaters by its story, but by the stunning visuals the film had to offer (especially when viewed in IMAX 3D). To a lesser extent, some feverishly believe the whole shebang, plot and all, was a magnificent followup to its predecessor, 80s sci-fi classic Tron. The good news for both of these camps is that the Blu-ray set, which includes Tron: The Original Classic and a satisfactory set of bonus features, is just the piece of eye candy worthy of any hi-def collector’s portfolio.

Storywise, Tron: Legacy is about par the course with the original. I’d describe as it as presenting a simple, easy to follow plot that posits some hazy computer mumbo-jumbo to make things seem more complicated than they are.
