The Truth About Zardoz, Plus Nine Other Things I Learned At Tcmff 2017

Just back from the 2017 TCM Classic Movie Festival with a few thoughts and thoughts about thoughts. I certainly held my reservations about this year’s edition, and though I ultimately ended up tiring early of flitting about from theater to theater like a mouse in a movie maze (it happens to even the most fanatically devoted of us on occasion, or so I’m told), there were, as always, several things I learned by attending Tcmff 2017 as well.

1) TCM Staffers Are Unfailingly Polite And Helpful

Thankfully I wasn’t witness, as I have been in past years, to any pass holders acting like spoiled children because they had to wait in a long queue or, heaven forbid, because they somehow didn’t get in to one of their preferred screenings. Part of what makes the Tcmff experience as pleasant as it often is can be credited to the tireless work

Blu-ray Review – The Comedy of Terrors (1963)

The Comedy of Terrors, 1963.

Directed by Jacques Tourneur.

Starring Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, Peter Lorre, Basil Rathbone, Joyce Jameson, Beverly Hills and Alan DeWitt.

Synopsis:

A scheming undertaker resorts to extreme measures to bring in some new business in order to pay his rent.

Both comedy and terror are two of the hardest genres to get right and combining the two successfully is even harder, so calling your film The Comedy of Terrors is going to give it a lot to live up to right from the off. Luckily the opening scene of a misty graveyard playing host to a funeral as several mourners look on sets the scene perfectly as once the service is over and the mourners depart, undertaker Waldo Trumbull (Vincent PriceThe Fall of the House of Usher) and his assistant Felix Gillie (Peter Lorre - Casablanca) give each other a nod and they’re off to work,

Blu-ray Review: The Vincent Price Collection II (Scream Factory)

The first Vincent Price collection from Scream Factory was a pure treasure. When October rolls around, almost nothing puts me in the Halloween mood like a constant stream of Vincent Price films on my TV. Never did I think that Scream could improve upon their original price collection, but when the films that would be included in this new set were announced, I was shocked. The first Vincent Price Collection has some really solid Price films, mostly of a Poe nature, and it was one of the most exciting releases of the year for fans of classic horror. The second set, drops the Poe theme(mostly), and includes some of Price’s most famous, well-regarded films, including a couple of my favorites. The list of films is impressive, and there are extras on most of the films. The packaging is consistent, and equally pleasing to the eyes. Scream Factory’s

I Am Legend: The Greatest Vampire Movie Never Made

The death of Richard Matheson on 22 June 2013 marked the end of an amazing career as a novelist and screenwriter. His most enduring legacy will always be as the author of I Am Legend, arguably one of the finest vampire novels ever written. Considered ‘the very peak of paranoid science fiction,’ Matheson’s groundbreaking debut novel is one of the few contemporary vampire stories that came close to the literary excellence of Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

With plans of a sequel to the Will Smith misfire I Am Legend (2007) being seriously considered by filmmakers, there is only one thing that fans of Matheson’s outstanding post apocalyptic work are asking “when is there going to be a Proper film version of the book?”

Published in 1954, I Am Legend tells the terrifying tale of Robert Neville, the sole survivor of a mysterious airborne virus that has turned everyone, including his wife Virginia and best friend Ben Cortman,

R.I.P. Richard Matheson

One of the giants, famed sci-fi author Richard Matheson, has died in California at the age of 87.

Matheson's most famous novel, "I Am Legend," has been adapted three times for the screen - most recently the 2007 version starring Will Smith.

Numerous other novels and short stories of his were turned into films including "Duel," "The Incredible Shrinking Man," "Somewhere in Time, "The Legend of Hell House," "The Comedy of Terrors," "Stir of Echoes," "What Dreams May Come," "The Box," and "Real Steel".

He himself penned numerous episodes of TV shows like "Star trek," "Night Gallery," "Lawman" and multiple episodes of "The Twilight Zone" including one of that show's most iconic stories - "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet".

Richard Matheson Has Died

Richard Matheson was an author and screenwriter who had a tremendous impact on the horror and sci-fi genres. We’re sad to pass on the news that he died yesterday at the age of 87. His daughter recently notified the public of his passing over Facebook and it’s said that he’s been battling illness for some time now:

My beloved father passed away yesterday at home surrounded by the people and things he loved…he was funny, brilliant, loving, generous, kind, creative, and the most wonderful father ever…I miss you and love you forever Pop and I know you are now happy and healthy in a beautiful place full of love and joy you always knew was there…”

Even if you’re not immediately familiar with his work, it has influenced some of your favorite movies. He’s probably best known for writing I Am Legend, which has

Happy Birthday Vincent Price!

Did you know that Christopher Lee and Vincent Price share the same birthday? Vincent Price would have been 102 years old today, and I have a list of his films you should check out, along with an embedded version of House on Haunted Hill that you can watch for free.

While many remember Vincent Price for Edward Scissorhands, The Fly, and the Corman-produced Poe adaptations, there are plenty of lesser-known classics. For those of you haven’t seen The Last Man on Earth, I highly suggest watching it. You’ll notice how similar it is to the modern zombie story and looks like it served as inspiration for George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. Here are some other Price films that you may want to check out:

House of Wax, The Tingler, Tales of Terror, Twice-Told Tales, The Comedy of Terrors, The Masque of the Red Death, Witchfinder General,
