‘Disobedience’ First Look: Rachel McAdams and Rachel Weisz Rekindle A Passionate Lesbian Romance
The first round of titles for the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival has been announced, and included among this year’s world premieres is Sebastián Lelio’s “Disobedience,” starring Rachel McAdams and Rachel Weisz. The movie is one of two Lelio dramas heading to Tiff this year; the other is “A Fantastic Woman,” which earned acclaim at Berlin and won Lelio the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay.

Tiff Reveals First Slate of 2017 Titles, Including ‘The Shape of Water,’ ‘Downsizing,’ and ‘Call Me By Your Name

Disobedience” is based on the 2006 novel of the same name by Naomi Alderman. The story follows a rabbi’s daughter (Weisz) who returns to her Orthodox Jewish community in Hendon, London following the death of her estranged father. While there, she rekindles a romance with a former friend (McAdams), who just so happens to be married to her cousin. Alessandro Nivola also stars.

Given the involvement of McAdams and Weisz,

It occurs to me that though we did mark the year's halfway point, we did not do a "wrap" post for May or June and here we are in mid July. So let's stop to catch our breath before steaming ahead into the dog days of summer. Herewith key posts in case you're behind on your favorite blog. That's this one, right? (Rhetorical question)

Exclusive Costume Featurette for My Cousin Rachel

Daphne du Maurier‘s original novel My Cousin Rachel apparently does not specify the exact period in which it’s set, but implies some time toward the end of the 19th century on the Cornish coast. This new version of the story starring Rachel Weisz and Sam Claflin actually positions itself in a specific time frame, as decided upon by director Roger Michell and costume designer Dinah Collin, namely the year 1840.

We have an exclusive featurette about the costume design of My Cousin Rachel, which although brief goes into some detail about what to expect from the finished film:

What is most fascinating is just why 1840 was chosen. It was very much a transitional era, essentially the second Industrial Revolution, so the mass expansion of railways, steam and gas. It was a working time and clothes began to reflect this, although skirts would eventually become much fuller about a decade

Can Wonder Woman Save the Sinking Summer Box Office?

Can Wonder Woman Save the Sinking Summer Box Office?
Many times, movies that open in the first weekend of June, following the Memorial Day weekend, take a big hit, since the winner of the Holiday usually repeats in its second weekend. That definitely won't be the case heading into this weekend, with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Baywatch both underperforming. Audiences' lack of interest in this sequel and TV show adaptation resulted in the worst Memorial Day box office weekend since 1999. That puts even more pressure on Warner Bros.' Wonder Woman to not only revitalize their Dceu franchise, but also kick start the summer box office as a whole. We're predicting that it should have no trouble beating both Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and fellow newcomer Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie to take the top spot with a projected $94.6 million.

This projection is ultimately higher than most of the Wonder Woman box office projections,

My Cousin Rachel Releases New Images

My Cousin Rachel, which hits theaters June 9th, has released some new images, and while they don’t exactly reveal anything integral to this adaptation, they certainly show off the charm and mood of the period piece.

The film stars Rachel Weisz as the titular character, which, if nothing else, alleviates concerns about not responding during production, with Sam Claflin as Philip and Iain Glen (one presumes) as Ambrose.

It’s unclear at this point where the adaptation is heading precisely, and whether director/writer Roger Michell is aiming to deliver something true to the du Maurier novel, or the Richard Burton/Olivia de Havilland film. The two have their differences, an idea noted even by du Maurier. It’s a question worth pondering, mainly because the tone and ending of neither fit very well within the confines of today’s “Hollywood ideals.” That’s perhaps a curious point to ponder in an adaptation,

The Rachel Weiszenaissance looks to be continuing at full speed after last year's indie hit The Lobster and her good notices for the otherwise middling Light Between the Oceans. We now have the trailer for her latest project, a Victorian era thriller based on a novel by the Og spookmaster Daphne du Maurier called My Cousin Rachel.

There have already been a few film adaptations over the years, but none that star Rachel Weisz, so I'm very excited to see what this latest has to offer.

Let's do a "Yes No Maybe So" after the jump, shall we?

Rachel Weisz Harbors Dark Secrets in New Trailer for ‘My Cousin Rachel’

While the title may have you believe a self-reflexive documentary about Rachel Weisz is coming from her not-too-distant family member, My Cousin Rachel is rather a period drama with a bit of a twist. An adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier‘s classic novel, the story is centered on an Englishman (Sam Claflin) who is caught in a bit of a pickle: he plots revenge against his cousin, Rachel (Weisz), under suspicion of murder, all the while falling for her irresistible charms.

Ahead of a release by Fox Searchlight this summer, a new trailer for the Roger Michell-directed feature has now landed. Rather than a staid period drama, Weisz looks to command this one with some serious bite. See the trailer below, along with the poster, for the film also starring Holliday Grainger, Iain Glen, and Pierfrancesco Favino.
