The Forgotten: George Archainbaud's "Hotel Haywire" (1937)

Really, I mean Preston Sturges' Hotel Haywire, because nobody's too interested in George Archainbaud, a Paramount contract director who had been directing for 20 years without helming a really memorable film (Thirteen Women, an uncomfortably racist pre-Code with Myrna Loy, is as exciting as it gets, and even that one is remembered chiefly for featuring the girl who threw herself off the Hollywood sign), He would continue for another 20, moving from B-westerns into TV westerns, without making anything else of particular note.Sturges wrote the script as part of his plan to get a long-term contract at Paramount. To particularly appeal to the suits there, he filled the story with roles for Paramount stars such as Mary Boland, Charles Ruggles, Fred MacMurray and Burns & Allen, none of whom were necessarily famous enough to carry a movie, but whose combined star-power might make an attractive investment for studio or future ticket-buyers.

Amazon Acquires Rights to 40 Films From SXSW, Paying $1.9 Million-Plus in Cash Bonuses (Exclusive)
Amazon has swept up streaming rights to 40 films that screened the 2017 SXSW Film Festival — including “Most Beautiful Island,” the Grand Jury Award winner for narrative feature — saying it will pay out at least $1.9 million in upfront cash bonuses for the titles.

The ecommerce giant snagged the SXSW selections through Amazon Video Direct’s Film Festival Stars program, designed to be a streamlined, no-haggle way for independent filmmakers to get paid for digital distribution. Amazon acquired 15 films from this year’s Sundance Film Festival under the program; it extended a similar offer to entrants in the Tribeca Film Festival and plans to take it to the Toronto International Film Festival, too.

Since Amazon launched Avd a year ago, the company says users have streamed “billions of minutes” of content distributed through the program and Amazon has paid “tens of millions” of dollars in royalties to distributors, filmmakers and content creators across genres including independent films,

How Hello! has gently sailed through the stormy waters of celebrity

For 25 years the magazine has chronicled the births, marriages and lovely homes of the stars – and it has changed the media's agenda

So many contracts have been signed and so many celebrity parties photographed since the first edition of Hello! went on sale in Britain 25 years ago, it is hard to pick out the most celebrated. Would it perhaps be the wedding of Paul and Sheryl Gascoigne in 1996, or perhaps one of Elton John's regular white tie and tiara affairs? Only a few of the big ones, such as Madonna's marriage to Guy Ritchie at Skibo castle in 2000, have eluded its pages. On Wednesday, however, the magazine's joint editors, Rosie Nixon and Ruth Sullivan, will be throwing a party of their own in London "to say thank you to those who have contributed to the magazine over the years".

"It is going to be a glamorous cocktail party and very exciting,

"I definitely feel my career comes second to my family. After I had my first daughter, I took three years off; I took a year and a half off my second. My mother worked when I was growing up, so I was under the impression I'd find it easy to be a working mom. But I found it very hard to be away from my family, even for short periods of time. Once they are at school, I'll

U.S. Supreme Court Marriage Equality Hearings Inspire Song by Hollywood Veteran

We all know that the issue of marriage equality is quite divisive, generating various sorts of responses and stances. Gay marriage is now official in places as diverse as Canada, Argentina, Australia, Mexico City, and Washington State, but it's all but unthinkable (at least for the time being) in places such as China, Nigeria, Iran, Texas, and Arkansas. Brad Pitt's mother and Angelina Jolie's father (that's Oscar-winning actor and Midnight Cowboy star Jon Voight) are totally against it, while Clint Eastwood doesn't give a damn about who gets hitched to whom. Unlike the Dirty Harry star, a former MGM contract player in the '40s -- that's Marsha Hunt (please see more info about her dozens of films further down) and a political activist in the last several decades, does very much care. (Pictured above: Hunt and documentarian Roger C. Memos, currently working on a project about the blacklisted actress.
