Directed by Oscar-nominated director Nathaniel Kahn, “The Price of Everything” examines the headaches associated with pricing art and the vagaries of a market based around subjective opinions of what is hot and valuable. It looks at collectors, dealers, auctioneers and artists in weaving together its cultural and commerical tapestry, and features interviews with the likes of Jeff Koons, Gerhard Richter, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, and Larry Poons.

The company has acquired U.S. TV rights to the film and will also open it in theaters in at least a dozen U.S. markets prior to its premiere on HBO. It debuts in Sundance on Jan. 19. Kahn previously worked with HBO on his 2004 documentary “My Architect” and his short “Two Hands.”

“I couldn’t think of a better home for the film than HBO

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Writes Essay Passionately Defending Luke Skywalker’s Controversial ‘The Last Jedi’ Arc
Joseph Gordon-Levitt has come to the rescue of his friend and collaborator Rian Johnson, who just happens to be the writer and director of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.” The actor was Johnson’s leading man in both “Brick” and “Looper” and had small cameo appearances in “The Brothers Bloom” and “The Last Jedi,” and now he’s penned an essay in which he passionately defends the decisions Johnson made for Luke Skywalker in the polarizing “Star Wars” sequel.

Gordon-Levitt’s essay is titled “A New Old Skywalker” and weighs in on Luke’s controversial story arc, which has been pinpointed as one of the reasons the film has received so much backlash. The Skywalker we meet in “The Last Jedi” is a Skywalker we’ve never experienced on film before.

This weekend, Paul Thomas Anderson‘s elegantly weird and gorgeously strange “Phantom Thread” goes into wide release and it truly cannot be missed. It’s another completely singular work from the filmmaker, with a story that has plenty going on beneath its refined stitching. The release of the movie means that the director is doing some final press rounds, and perhaps chattier than ever, he’s got plenty to say.

We’ve known for a little while know that Anderson wants to work with “Girls Trip” breakout star Tiffany Haddish, however, on the Nerdist podcast, he’s reveals just how much he admires the actress’ talent.

Film Review: ’12 Strong’

Film Review: ’12 Strong’
Sixteen years after U.S. troops landed in Afghanistan, the conflict there might be summed up as a violent holding pattern, or a stalemate we’re still mired in, or — if you squint hard enough — a slow-motion qualified success. But only the producer Jerry Bruckheimer would seek to portray it as a victory decisive enough to be called a triumph of the kick-ass American spirit.

“12 Strong,” one of those rare “serious” Bruckheimer productions, tells the story of the first U.S. soldiers to land in Afghanistan in the days after 9/11: the members of Oda 595, an elite Special Forces unit that was ordered to link up with a local warlord and fight its way, village by village, to the Taliban stronghold of Mazar-i-Sharif (the country’s fourth largest city). There, they would theoretically gut the Taliban’s nexus of power and topple the ability of Afghanistan to serve as a training ground for Al Qaeda troops.

Millennial TV viewing decline set to level off, Deloitte report

Report finds that use of ‘digital distractions’ will plateau in 2020.

The end of the decline in linear TV viewing among millennials is in sight, according to a Deloitte report.

The consultancy’s annual Television, Media and Telecoms Predictions report has predicted that 18-24 year-olds’ TV viewing will continue to fall for a further two years before plateauing as ‘digital distractions’ reach saturation point.

Millennial viewing of live and time-shifted TV programming in the UK, Us and Canada will continue to drop by 10-15%, consistent with the previous seven years, until 2020, Deloitte claimed.

After this point, the decline will slow or flatten altogether as smartphones, SVoD services and social media reach peak usage levels.

Deloitte noted that use of social media services such as Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook among the demographic had stood at around 60 minutes per day since December 2016. Some 95% of 18-24s now own a smartphone, with little opportunity for further growth.

Keira Knightley criticises rape culture in modern cinema

Speaking about #MeToo and Hollywood, the actor says there is ‘something distasteful in the way women are portrayed’

Keira Knightley has criticised the amount of sexual violence against women in films, saying that she prefers period stories to contemporary-set dramas because, in the latter, “the female characters nearly always get raped”.

In an interview with Variety, Knightley was explaining her preference for “historical pieces” in the run-up to the premiere of her Colette biopic – set during the Parisian belle époque – at the Sundance film festival. “I always find something distasteful in the way women are portrayed [in films set in the modern day], whereas I’ve always found very inspiring characters offered to me in historical pieces.” She acknowledged, however, that there has been some improvement in “the last few years” as the Hollywood mood change has meant that “women’s stories are suddenly viewed as important”. She said: “I’m suddenly being sent scripts with present-day
