How Vocal Coach Liz Caplan Makes Both Hollywood and Broadway Sing

How Vocal Coach Liz Caplan Makes Both Hollywood and Broadway Sing
Ben Platt, the Tony-winning original star of “Dear Evan Hansen,” is leaning backward over a piano and singing scales. His head’s cradled in one hand of his voice teacher, Liz Caplan, and she’s playing piano with the other. It looks awkward and uncomfortable for both actor and teacher, but something about the position opens up Platt’s sound as he vocalizes into a higher register. It’s like a magic trick.

“She has illustrated to me in so many ways how the body can tense, tighten and sabotage itself when the mind isn’t in the right place,” says Platt, who credits Caplan for his ability to sustain his physically and emotionally intense performance in “Dear Evan Hansen.” (He even thanked her in his acceptance speech at the Tony Awards.) “Her ability to pinpoint and correct that is one of the things that makes her a genius.”

Platt is far from the only devotee. If you

Movie Review: Pitch Perfect 3

The Barden Bellas have graduated and moved out of their dorms, and on with their lives—away from Barden University, away from their stewardess-chic aca-uniforms, and away from each other. For most of them, though, post-college life has not been all that peachy-keen. Pitch Perfect 3 opens with Beca (Anna Kendrick) in her apparent dream job as a music producer, though we quickly find out she loathes it—and for good reason. Just as Beca’s career implodes, Chloe (Brittany Snow)—an Og Barden Bella also hitting rock bottom—demands that they, along with Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson), attend the Barden Bellas a cappella reunion that evening.

At the reunion, we find that while Chloe aspires to be a veterinarian—her day job stinks. Pilot hopeful Cynthia (Ester Dean) has flunked her latest flight test. Aubrey (Anna Camp) hates her job as a camp director. Stacie (Alexis Knapp) is eight months pregnant.

Ben Platt's Career Evolution: From Pitch Perfect to Dear Evan Hansen

Ben Platt's Career Evolution: From Pitch Perfect to Dear Evan Hansen
What a year it's been for Ben Platt! The 24-year-old made his mark on Hollywood, Broadway and beyond in 2017, thanks in major part to his critically-acclaimed role in Dear Evan Hansen. He took home the award for Leading Actor in a Musical at the 2017 Tonys, reflecting on his journey from theatre-loving tot to a Broadway powerhouse in his acceptance speech.  "When I was 6 years old I was the prince in Cinderella in a blue sequined vest," Platt shared. "I've spent every day since then just madly in love with musical theater. It's where I've found everything I've ever loved and where I belong." And though he got his start in show biz on the stage, a...

Pitch Perfect 3 review

The Bellas returns for their third and final film. Here's our review of Pitch Perfect 3...

After two college set Pitch Perfect movies, we return to the musical world of the Barden Bellas for their swansong, as they grapple with the realities of life after university: unsatisfying jobs, broken relationships, pregnancy, Amy Winehouse tribute acts... it's a mixed bag for the former acapella superstars. When the opportunity comes for them to join the Uso tour for one last hurrah (and maybe win the opportunity to open for DJ Khaled’s show) they jump at the chance to sing together again and relive their former glory.

But of course nothing comes easily for the Bellas and they are up against other music acts who are aca-sceptics and aca-doubters who use real instruments (gasp) and don’t appreciate their aca-talents. There's also the added complication of the surprise appearance of John Lithgow

Beanie Feldstein Is the Broadway Star-Turned-Movie Star Next Door (Exclusive)

Beanie Feldstein Is the Broadway Star-Turned-Movie Star Next Door (Exclusive)
Eight shows a week, Beanie Feldstein takes the stage at the Shubert Theatre in New York City to perform in the revival of Hello, Dolly! Wearing a pastel pink bodice adorned with frilly violet lace, a bustling striped skirt and a mop of curls atop her head, the 24-year-old belts out a rousing rendition of “Motherhood” as shop girl Minnie Fay. "I stand for motherhood, America and a hot lunch for orphans / Take off your hat, sir, while your country's flag is passing," she sings alongside her co-star, Bette Midler.

It's quite a Broadway debut, one that Feldstein, who spent her formative summers at the prestigious acting camp Stagedoor Manor and her high school years obsessing over musical theater with best friend (and Dear Evan Hansen star) Ben Platt, could only have dreamed of. Being cast in the company of a legend of screen and stage in an award-winning production -- Midler won a Tony for Hello, Dolly
