Karlovy Vary Film Review: ‘The Next Skin’

Karlovy Vary Film Review: ‘The Next Skin’
“Is he or isn’t he?” is the question driving the frost-bitten assumed-identity thriller “The Next Skin” — though even if answered, the matter of exactly who “he” is would continue to hang in the balance. Intriguing in its setup, as a surly, long-missing 17-year-old boy is reunited with a mother he claims not to remember, Isaki Lacuesta and Isa Campos’ co-directed effort finally has a few too many unknown factors to fully capture the imagination: With its characters held at arm’s length from us throughout, it’s not always easy to invest emotionally in the disentangling of their past. Reminiscent in its premise of Bart Layton’s fascinating 2012 documentary “The Imposter,” albeit with the melodrama ramped up a notch or two, this Spanish-Swiss co-production scooped multiple awards on home turf at the Malaga Film Festival; while a little slack in execution, it has a strong enough hook to snag modest international distribution.

Lacuesta, Campo Discuss Mystery Drama ‘The Next Skin’ at Karlovy Vary

Lacuesta, Campo Discuss Mystery Drama ‘The Next Skin’ at Karlovy Vary
La propera pell” (The Next Skin), by Spanish filmmakers Isaki Lacuesta and Isa Campo, tells the story of a teenager who returns home after having disappeared eight years prior and long presumed dead.

The film, in competition at Karlovy Vary, explores the emotional impact the boy’s return has on his mother, who ardently believes that he is in fact her long lost son, although others in the small Pyrenean village begin to doubt his identity.

Lacuesta and Campo’s latest collaboration is a tense and atmospheric drama that unfolds like a thriller while examining themes of family, loss, jealousy, sexuality and abuse.

The film stars Alex Monner, Emma Suarez, Sergi Lopez, Bruno Todeschini and Igor Szpakowski — and re-teams up-and-coming actors Monner and Szpakowski, who starred in the hit Spanish TV series “Polseres vermelles” (The Red Band Society).

The film marks Campo’s first outing as a director, although she

[Rec]³ Génesis Movie Review 2
Title: [Rec]³ Génesis Directed By: Paco Plaza Starring: Leticia Dolera, Diego Martín, Àlex Monner, Emilio Mencheta, Ismael Martínez, Claire Baschet It’s hard to believe that with the amount of saturation of found footage movies flooding our theaters in recent years, that there was a time when the filmmaking style was something to be considered “unique”. We all have The Blair Witch Project to blame/thank for that resurgence when it was released in 1999, but another recent example would be the claustrophobic zombie-esque movie [Rec] from Spain. If you’re thinking that a group of people quarantined inside a building by the military in a found footage style is gimmicky, you might [ Read More ]

[Rec] 3 Genesis Movie Review
Title: [Rec] 3 Genesis Directed By: Paco Plaza Starring: Leticia Dolera, Diego Martín, Àlex Monner, Emilio Mencheta, Ismael Martínez, Claire Baschet I’m all for trying something new, but when you’ve got a film franchise like “Rec,” certain expectations must be met. Perhaps his fictional virus finally got to him because the fact that writer-director Paco Plaza thinks he can suddenly do away with found footage and horror in the third installment is downright bizarre. It’s Clara and Koldo’s (Leticia Dolera and Diego Martín) big day and their family and friends have all come out to see them get married. All is well until Uncle Victor (Emilio Mencheta) starts feeling under [ Read More ]

Frightfest 2012 Review: [Rec]3 Genesis

[Rec]3 Genesis

Stars: Leticia Dolera, Diego Martín, Javier Botet, Àlex Monner, Ismael Martínez, Borja Glez. Santaolalla, Mireia Ros | Written by Paco Plaza, Luiso Berdejo | Directed by Paco Plaza

Going it solo for the third film in the series, Paco Plaza helms what is, by far, a much stronger film than [Rec]2 and a film that not only changes the game for the franchise, abandoning as it does the “found-footage” perspective on proceedings, but also expands the mythos and the scope of the series, throwing religion much more to the fore in a way that takes the series, and the traditional zombie film, to whole new levels. The film is also, at its core, a love story. Yes, I did say love story.

[Rec] Genesis sees Clara and Koldo celebrating their recent nuptials at a posh Barcelona mansion when all hell (literally) breaks loose. With the zombie count rising and the newly-married pair separated

[Rec] 3: Genesis Red-Band Trailer Goes Live

If you’re anticipating the third installment of Paco Plaza’s highly praised [Rec] series, this brand new red-band trailer should certainly sate the appetite, at least for the time being. This piece of footage showcases some bloody wedding festivities, and while I’m not sure it’s worthy of an official “red band” tag, it’s still awfully entertaining! [Rec] 3: Genesis was written and directed by Paco Plaza, who’s manned the entire franchise at this point (Luiso Berdejo assisted in the crafting of the screenplay). Leticia Dolera, Diego Martín, Javier Botet, Àlex Monner, Ismael Martínez and Mireia Ros star.
