Was the BBC drama Gunpowder, in the end, a horror story?

It finished as it began: with torture and death. Anybody who knows the first thing about Bonfire Night could tell you that was going to happen. I’m glad that the director, J Blakeson, applied the same principles to these last difficult scenes as he did to the ones that kicked off the series. There was no looking away from what the state was capable of. The camera was steady as it gazed upon the decapitated head of Catesby (Kit Harington), placed outside parliament as a warning to all.

Who will hold their nerve?

The second episode of BBC drama Gunpowder asks this question in a number of ways, and does a great job of building suspense for the finale next week. And it’s not only the plotters who must decide whether they can stay the course

At first, we followed Robert Catesby (played by Kit Harington) on his journey around Spain and France, looking for allies and finding more bloodshed in the form of the Catholic church happily having those who practise a different faith burned at the stake. A powerful scene visually, I felt Harington didn’t quite manage to

My early knowledge about the Gunpowder Plot came from a Ladybird book in their ‘Adventure from History’ series. It went into a good amount of detail about certain elements such as the people behind the plan to blow up the Houses of Parliament and how they were caught. It was an intriguing business, but it wasn’t until many years later that I made an emotional connection to it through Alan Moore’s V for Vendetta. Desperation, fear, and persecution seeped into the mix. Every year, on the fifth of November, I think

DVD Review – Mine (2016)

Mine, 2016.

Directed by Fabio Guaglione and Fabio Resinario.

Starring Armie Hammer, Annabelle Wallis, Tom Cullen and Clint Dyer.

Synopsis:

After aborting his mission, an army sniper is stranded in the middle of the desert. One small movement could kill him, so he has to fight against the elements and the psychological toll of the conditions simply to stay alive.

After a lumpy few years that included The Lone Ranger and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. things seem to be looking up for Armie Hammer. Solid performances in Nocturnal Animals and The Birth Of Nation were followed by Ben Wheatley’s Free Fire and he’s set to be re-united with the director in Freakshift. That’s on top of as many as another four films set for release this year.

Despite getting a cinema outing in the States, Mine has gone straight to DVD in the UK. And it’s a
