AFI Fest 2017 Announces Indie Additions, Including ‘Bodied,’ ‘Mr. Roosevelt,’ ‘Thoroughbreds,’ and Many More
The American Film Institute (AFI) has announced the films that will be featured in their New Auteurs and American Independents sections at the upcoming AFI Fest 2017 presented by Audi. Selections include a number of lauded features from around the festival circuit, including Cannes offerings like “I Am Not a Witch,” SXSW favorites like “Gemini” and “Mr. Roosevelt,” the Sundance breakout “Thoroughbreds,” and Joseph Kahn’s Toronto Midnight Madness favorite “Bodied,” among others.

Highlighting first- and second-time feature film directors, New Auteurs is designed as the festival’s platform for upcoming filmmakers from all over the world to showcase their new films. This year, the section includes 11 films, nine of which come from female directors. ‘Sultana,’ ‘Hero’,’ ‘Tribe’ Among Projects Pitched at Segovia’s 3D Wire
Barcelona— Animation features “Sultana’s Dream,” “Dragonkeeper” and “Unicorn Wars” and TV shows such as “The Infinite Hero” and “The Tribe” are among 121 works being pitched at Segovia’s 9th 3D Wire Animation, Video Games and New Media fest-mart which kicked off Oct. 2 All project projects from Portugal and Spain.

“Sultana” marks the animation feature debut of Isabel Herguera, a toon/live-action hybrid feature inspired by a classic feminist tale by Bengali social activist Begum Rokeya published in 1905. Formerly Lleida animation fest Animac director Herguera was selected this year as a talent to track by Variety. Feature is produced by Spain’s El Gato Verde, Abano, Uniko Portugal, the U.K.’s Sparkle Animation and Italy’s Stemo Productions.

Film Constellation to sell Florida-set drama 'Life and Nothing More', first look

Exclusive: First look at Toronto premiere from Aqui Y Alla director Antonio Méndez Esparza.

Film Constellation is handling world sales on Antonio Méndez Esparza’s (Aqui Y Alla) first English-language film Life And Nothing More, which will get its world premiere in Toronto’s Contemporary World Cinema programme.

Following a similar filming process to his well-received 2012 drama Aqui Y Alla, which turned on a Mexican immigrant returning to his home country, Life And Nothing More was shot over a period of two and a half years in North Florida with non-professional Us actors.

Screen can reveal the first look at the film which tracks the life of a young African American family, unfolding the obstinate realities of family, race, and the legal system, against the backdrop of the 2016 Us presidential election.

San Sebastian Film Festival adds 'The Disaster Artist'
Films from Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano, Alexandros Avranas and Diego Lerman added to competition line-up.

Further competition titles for the 2017 San Sebastian Film Festival (22-30 September) have been announced, including The Disaster Artist.

Written, directed and starring James Franco, the project tells the story of Tommy Wiseau’s infamous cult film The Room. It will also appear at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Other titles competing for the Golden Shell include Diego Lerman’s A Sort Of Family (Una Especie De Familia); Love Me Not from Alexandros Avranas; Barbara Albert’s Mademoiselle Paradis; and The Lion Sleeps Tonight from Nobuhiro Suwa.

Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano’s C’est La Vie!, Ivana Mladenovic’s Soldiers. Story From Ferentari and Matt Porterfield’s Sollers Point have also been announced.

Alexandros Avranas won the best director Silver Lion at Venice for Miss Violence in 2013. Diego Lerman’s Suddenly won the Silver Leopard at the Locarno Festival in 2002.

The latest movies by U.S. multi-hyphenate James Franco, Argentine Cannes regular Diego Lerman, and Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano, the duo behind “Untouchables,” the biggest French-language hit ever, will play in San Sebastian‘s main competition this September.

Barbara Albert’s “Mademoiselle Paradis,” Alexandros Avranas’ “Love Me Not,” Matt Porterfield’s “Sollers Point,” Nobuhiro Suwa’s “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” and “Soldiers. Story from Ferentari,” the feature debut of Serbian Ivana Mladenovic, also make up cut.

All vie for the festival’s top Golden Shell, as will already announced contenders such as festival opener, Wim Wenders’ “Submergence,” plus the Spanish movies “El autor,” by Manuel Martín-Cuenca, Jon Garaño and Aitor Arregi’s “Handia” and Antonio Méndez Esparza’s “Life and Nothing More.”

Several of the new international contenders will launch at Toronto’s market or official section before landing in San Sebastian for their European debuts.

Handia will premiere at the festival Photo: Courtesy of San Sebastian Film Festival Jurassic World 2 and The Impossible screenwriter Sergio G Sánchez will premiere his directorial debut Marrowbone out of competition at San Sebastian Film Festival.

The film - about three siblings threatened by something otherworldly after the death of their mother - was among the 21 films with Spanish production that were announced for the programme today (July 28). The selection will also include Antonio Méndez Esparza's Life And Nothing More, Basque champions Jon Garaño and Aitor Arregi's Handia and El autor by Manuel Martín Cuenca, the third time his films have been selected for competition at the Spanish festival.

The festival's showcase Pearls section will close with Fernando Leon de Aranoa’s Loving Pablo - which will have its premiere in Venice, which charts Pablo Escobar’s love affair with a TV presenter and starring Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz.

The Cinéfondation’s Atelier is hosting its tenth edition this year and is set to invite 15 directors to Cannes whose projects have been considered particularly promising. Together with their producers, the selected directors will be able to meet potential partners, a necessary step to finish their project and start the making of their film. Created in 2005, the Cinéfondation’s l'Atelier goal is to encourage the emergence of a new generation of filmmakers. Guadalajara Ff Cine Latino Award at Psiff: The Ficg Kicks Off the Year with the Presentation of an Award in California

The Guadalajara International Film Festival (Ficg) is taking part in the year’s first celebration of the seventh art—the Palm Springs International Film Festival—where it is slated to present the Cine Latino Award to the best Iberoamerican film screened at the 24th edition of the California festival, which will run from January 3rd to 14th, 2013.

The award is accompanied by a cash prize of Us$5,000 contributed by the Guadalajara International Film Festival and the University of Guadalajara Foundation/USA located in Los Angeles, California.

The Cine Latino Award highlights the enormous creativity of new talents in the world of Iberoamerican cinema, at the same time underlining the commitment of the Ficg and the University of Guadalajara Foundation/USA to the consolidation of culture and the arts in the region and to the wider interchange of ideas within a global context.

I will have the pleasure of being on the jury along with Juan Carlos Arciniegas (Ccn en Español), a journalist with an established career in the area of motion picture and entertainment criticism and analysis—and Iván Trujillo Bolio, director of the Guadalajara International Film Festival.

LatinoBuzz Asks Programmers: What is Your Top 5 Latino Films of 2012?

A look back at 2012 reveals an undeniable fact, it has been a great year for Latino film. Sundance started the year off strong with films like Aurora Guerrero’s sweet and tender Mosquita y Mari and Marialy Rivas’ rambunctious Joven y Alocada (Young & Wild). Gina Rodriguez broke out in Filly Brown, as a rapper who needs to make it big so she can raise money to get her mom out of jail. In the film, Jenni Rivera played the part of Filly’s mom in her first, and sadly last, movie role.

There was also a strong Latin American presence at Cannes this past summer, boasting films from Mexico, Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. It might as well have been called Mexi-Cannes, with Mexican films winning awards across all main sections of the festival. Carlos Reygadas was honored as the Best Director for his controversial film Post Tenebras Lux, despite having received boos at its premiere screening. The prize for the Critics’ Week section went to Aquí y Allá (Here and There) and Después de Lucía (After Lucia) won the top prize for Un Certain Regard.

It’s been an especially favorable year for Chilean cinema. The New York Film Festival, in its 50th edition this past Fall, included three highly anticipated films by Pablo Larraín, Valeria Sarmiento, and the late Raúl Ruiz. And Chile continued to outshine the rest of the region by winning two top spots at the Festival Internacional de Nuevo Cine Latino de La Habana (the Havana Film Festival) just a few days ago. Pablo Larraín’s No, starring Gael Garcia Bernal, won the First Coral Prize. It’s a brilliant take on the real life story of an advertising campaign that ousted General Pinochet from power during a shining moment in Chilean politics. Violeta se fue a los cielos (Violeta Went To Heaven), a biopic about internationally famous Violeta de la Parra, a Chilean singer, songwriter, and poet won the Second Prize.

Whether it was at Cannes, Sundance, or countless other festivals, Latino films were winning award after award this year and even getting distribution (albeit usually in limited release). With the flurry of activity surrounding the region’s filmmaking, it can be hard to keep up with it all. Thankfully, there are professionals who get paid to keep track of what movies are receiving accolades, have the most buzz, and got picked up for distribution. LatinoBuzz went straight to the experts, film programmers, to ask, “What’s your top 5 Latino films of 2012?”

Mosquita y Mari is a gorgeous film full of heart. Marialy Rivas (Director of Joven y Alocada) is an incredibly exciting new voice in Latin American cinema. She's fearless and full of love. I'm a huge fan of Lucy Mulloy (Director of Una Noche). She draws these wonderful performances from non-professional actors. A natural at using the lens to tell a story. In Las Malas Intenciones Fatima Buntinx plays the lead perfectly. Andres Wood made a beautiful film called 'Machuca', that captured the soul of Chile in the 70's and he does the same with a bio-pic of Violeta Parra, a folk singer who was a part of 'La Nueva Canción Chilena'.

Just 5?? That's tough! In Filly Brown, Gina Rodriguez turns in a great performance, and I expect to see more great things from her very soon. No, I saw at Cannes, and it was fascinating, especially in contrast to Larraín's previous (amazing) films. La Hora Cero has unforgettable scenes and characters! La Mujer de Ivan has amazing acting, and I believe Maria de Los Angeles Garcia is definitely a talent to watch. Reportero is also fantastic.

Kasaravalli Retrospective at Bengaluru International Film Festival 2012

The fifth edition of the Bengaluru International Film Festival will hold retrospectives of Girish Kasaravalli and Jahnu Barua among others. Five of Kasaravalli’s films: Tabarana Kathe (1986), Kraurya (1996), Thaayi Saheba (1997), Dweepa (2003) and Hasina (2004)will be screened. While Barua’s Halodhia Choraye Baodhan Khai (1987), Banani (1990), Firingoti (1992) and Hkhagoroloi Bohu Door(1995) will be screened.

Besides, three other sections are dedicated to Indian cinema. Chitrabharathi – Indian Cinema Competition, Kannada Cinema (competition and screening of films in other dialects in Karnataka) and 100 years of Indian Cinema (screening of 14 films).

2012 Gotham Awards: ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ Wins Best Feature, ‘Beast’ Takes Home Pair

In the battle of the Andersons, it was Wes who beat P.T for Best Feature at the 2012 Gotham Awards. Moonrise Kingdom would go 1 for 2 as Lynn Shelton’s Your Sister’s Sister easily among the year’s the best, for its natural, on-screen chemistry was handsomely awarded the Best Ensemble Performance prize. Making it an almost all Sundance Film Festival takes Gotham kind of year, in the Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You it’s Terence Nance’s An Oversimplification of Her Beauty which gets an extra boost for theatrical play. The heavy favorite in all categories combined was Beasts of the Southern Wild‘s Benh Zeitlin as Best Breakthrough Director and Audience award, while in the Breakthrough Actor category, it’s Emayatzy Corinealdi
