‘The Lodger’ DVD Review

Stars: Alexa PenaVega, Spencer Grammer, Kathryn Morris, Richard Riehle, Bryan Dechart | Written by Aaron Horwitz | Directed by Rob Margolies

Originally titled 2Br/1Ba, then retitled Roommate Wanted for its Us release, The Lodger - debuting here in the UK complete with cliched supermarket-friendly dark, brooding artwork which sells the film more as a straight up horror rather than the black comedy is really is (talk about mis-marketing) – is actually a loose remake of 2Ldk, the 2003 Japanese “film” (it only ran just over an hour) directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi.

Interestingly, 2Ldk was actually made as part of a filmmmaking challenge called the “Duel Project”, which saw Tsutsumi go head to head with director Ryuhei Kitamura to make a film under strict criteria: The script can contain no more than 2-3 characters and must be shot, on a low budget, in seven days and can only take place in one setting. The most important rule?

‘The Remaining’ DVD Review

Stars: Johnny Pacar, Shaun Sipos, Bryan Dechart, Alexa Vega, Italia Ricci, Liz E. Morgan, John Pyper-Ferguson, Kim Pacheco | Written by Casey La Scala, Chris Dowling | Directed by Casey La Scala

If there’s one thing I’ll never understand it’s the American obsession with the rapture. Over the past couple of years we’ve seen a ton of TV shows and movies centered around the biblical event and most – like The Remaining – are, frankly, terrible. From the gloriously over the top Nicolas Cage film Left Behind, to the completely unfunny (and a waste of the talents involved) Rapture-Palooza, it seems the mix of religious themes and current Hollywood film making do not gel. Then again maybe it’s because, despite a belief in a higher power, I’m not the target market for films of this nature – after all, most rapture-themed films play on inherent fears found in religion.

Film Review: ‘The Remaining’

Film Review: ‘The Remaining’
Genre mashups don’t come much odder than “The Remaining,” a theologically questionable but fitfully exciting melodrama about fear and loathing among the non-Raptured. once this small-budget indie finishes its limited theatrical run and is resurrected in homescreen platforms.

Director and co-scripter Casey La Scala strikes dim echoes of “Left Behind,” “The Leftovers” and Michael Tolkin’s overdue-for-rediscovery “The Rapture” while focused on a cross-section of unfortunates who don’t make the final cut when God separates the wheat from the chaff. During La Scala’s version of Judgment Day, souls are separated from their bodies and whisked up to heaven — leaving behind an unsettling abundance of corpses, and triggering panicky news accounts of an “Instant Death Syndrome” pandemic that is “both troubling and foreboding.”

This sudden accumulation of cadavers — accompanied by earthquakes, loud thunder, downpours of fire and ice, and sundry other biblical portents — puts a serious damper on

The Remaining: See Alexa PenaVega as rapture survivor in new trailer

The Remaining: See Alexa PenaVega as rapture survivor in new trailer
Alexa PenaVega finds her wedding interrupted by a biblical rapture in the trailer for The Remaining.

Machete Kills actress PenaVega, Don Jon's Italia Ricci and Texas Chainsaw 3D actor Shaun Sipos are among a group of survivors who are left to find out why a large portion of the population all died suddenly.

They also have to contend with frightening creatures as they get to the bottom of whether a rapture has occurred or whether something altogether more sinister is afoot.

The Remaining has been directed by Casey La Scala, who also wrote the screenplay with Chris Dowling.

La Scala has previously produced the Bryan Dechart-directed thriller El Remanente.

This new film will open in cinemas later in the year.
