'I Kill Giants': Film Review

'I Kill Giants': Film Review
A teenage girl flees from emotional trauma into a world of make-believe peril in I Kill Giants, Anders Walter's adaptation of the comic book by Joe Kelly. Set in a Northeastern coastal community and making good use of local scenery, the picture creates an inviting world while treading much the same ground as last year's England-set Tiff entry A Monster Calls. Though less persuasive than that J.A. Bayona film, this one will find admirers on the fest circuit, resonating especially with fantasy-lovers who felt like outcasts in school.

Madison Wolfe stars as Barbara, a loner who spends most of her...

‘I Kill Giants’ Director Anders Walter On Uphill Battle Toward Trust From Graphic Novelist Joe Kelly — Toronto Studio

‘I Kill Giants’ Director Anders Walter On Uphill Battle Toward Trust From Graphic Novelist Joe Kelly — Toronto Studio
They say never to work with children or giants—and of course, director Anders Walter did both with his Toronto Film Festival-premiering drama I Kill Giants. Based on the acclaimed Man of Action/Image Comics graphic novel I Kill Giants by Joe Kelly and Ken Niimura, the fantasy film—akin to last year’s impressive A Monster Calls—follows a young girl named Barbara (Madison Wolfe), who battles with imaginary giants and demons inside, not to mention a great deal of external…

Every time Anders Walter's I Kill Giants gets mentioned in the news, I become instantaneously flustered. With her trusty hammer, Koveleski, Barbara protects her home from a world of magical giants and... Read More...

Toronto 2017: New I Kill Giants Clip, Why Are You Sweating?

Are giants real? That's the essential question at the heart of a new clip from I Kill Giants. The film tells "the story of Barbara Thorsen (Madison Wolfe), a teenage girl who chooses to escape the realities of school and a drab family life by retreating into her magical world of Titans and Giants," according to the official verbiage. "With the help of her new friend Sophia (Sydney Wade) and her school therapist (Zoe Saldana), she will learn to battle her Giants and face her fears - tackling the mean bullies at school, her sister (Imogen Poots) and her difficult work situation, and eventually her fear of death." My interest in this project dates back to the comic book series, written by Joe Kelly, who...

I Kill Giants: First Images From The Graphic Novel Adaptation

A trio of images from Anders Walters' I Kill Giants, an adaptation of the graphic novel by Joe Kelly, dropped yesterday. No time like the present to have a look at Zoe Salanda as school psychologist Mrs. Mollé and Madison Wolfe as the central character in the story, Barbara.    As stated, Wolfe plays Barbara, a young girl who battles real and imaginary monsters in her life. When I heard that I Kill Giants was going to be adapted I immediately bought the graphic novel. And while Wolfe may not match the slenderness of J.M. Ken Niimura's character design I really do like what is going on here.    The film is currently in post and sales company Xyz Films is shopping the film at...

Superman: Black Dawn’s Big Bad May Have Just Been Spoiled

Although the “Black Dawn” story arc currently unfolding in the pages of Superman may not be as strong as previous offerings, we can probably all agree that it’s still a decent read and that the creative team of Peter J. Tomasi, Pat Gleason and Doug Mahnke haven’t really steered us wrong since taking the wheel at the start of Rebirth.

If you’ve been keeping up with the title, you’re well aware that the Kent family’s neighbor who looks an awful lot like Wilford Brimley isn’t exactly what he seems to be and has so far succeeded in getting the drop on Batman and Superman alike. And from what we can tell, a mysterious force is pulling the strings of both him and the townsfolk.

Now, when the “Black Dawn” finale, Superman #25, was originally solicited, a cover didn’t accompany it, but here’s what

Joe Kelly’s all-ages adventure Kid Savage set for release in April

Image Comics has announced that Man of Action Entertainment’s Joe Kelly has teamed up with lauded British cartoonist Ilya for an all-new all-ages series Kid Savage, which is set to hit stores in April, with an excerpt also featured as a Free Comic Book Day title in May.

“When I was a kid, I loved taking toys from different corners of the toybox and putting them in stories together. Astronauts with dinosaurs. Superheroes and talking cars. Didn’t matter so long as the world in my head was vast and the characters were cool,” said Kelly. “Kid Savage continues that theme of play for me. I wanted to write an all-ages book featuring genre-mashing adventure and an honest, modern family dynamic. Thanks to the deft lines of Ilya and clever hues of Gary Caldwell, Kid Savage is a thrill ride of color and shape, and at the same time

AFM: Independent Financing Evolves, Adapts to New Market Realities

AFM: Independent Financing Evolves, Adapts to New Market Realities
With tried-and-true film financing models now far from reliable, with digital platforms offering a double-edged sword of bigger buying with aggressive competition, and with economic volatility overseas, many experts say global independent film financing is riskier than ever.

“We’re in a period of uncertainty, both domestically and internationally,” says IM Global CFO Miguel Palos, who’ll be speaking at the American Film Market’s Nov. 4 global film financing panel, the 360 View, which features industry heavyweights like Weinstein Co. COO/president David Glasser. “In the U.S., you [used to be able to] say, ‘If my budget is $30 [million]-$35 million and I spend $20 million on P&A, I’ll get a minimum amount from home video and a minimum MG from certain territories.’ Now Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and others are creating so much content that it’s difficult to model out what return you’ll get on your investment.”

But these new realities — and the ways buyers, sellers, and financiers are adapting to them — shed light on where the market is heading and some possible ways to navigate it.

Imogen Poots Joins Zoe Saldana in The Fantasy Film I Kill Giants

Imogen Poots (Green Room, Roadies) has been cast in a new fantasy film with Zoe Saldana called I Kill Giants. They both join Madison Wolfe (True Detective, Joy), who will play the lead young girl in the film.

The film is based on a critically-acclaimed graphic novel written by Joe Kelly. The story follows a misfit girl named Barbara (Wolfe) who is battling both real and imaginary monsters in her life. Saldana is taking on the role of a school psychologist named Mrs. Mollé, who plays a key role by helping Barbara face both internal and external threats, forming an inspiring bond with her in the process.

There's no information on who Poots is playing, but she's a great actress that I've enjoyed watching in the films she's been in. I'm sure she'll be awesome in the movie.

The movie is being directed by short film director Anders Walter from
