Ucp Developing Projects With Sam Raimi, ‘Sense8’ Writers Under Renewed Dark Horse Entertainment Deal

Universal Cable Productions has renewed its first-look deal with Dark Horse Entertainment. As part of the renewed agreement, the studio has begun development on series adaptations on several Dark Horse comics and podcasts.

Among the new projects are “Tanis,” based on the hit podcast, developed by Lee Shipman (“The Son”) and podcast creator Terry Miles and produced by Sam Raimi and Debbie Liebling through their company Pod 3; “Mind Mgmt,” from Matt Kindt, developed by Dan Cerone (“The Blacklist”); “The Bright Sessions” adapted for television by Gabrielle G. Stanton (“Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Flash”) and creator and star of the podcast, Lauren Shippen; and “Flutter” based on the Lgbtq comic by Jennie Wood and adapted by Katherine Lindberg and Marc Rosen.

Hollywood Horror Museum: Press Release: "The Nsf just announced the launch of their Kickstarter for the Hollywood Horror Museum. The museum, created by some of horror and Sci-Fi’s biggest names, will be the world’s first educational, non-profit museum teaching the history of horror in films, TV, literature and art, as well as filmmaking, makeup, costumes and special effects, from model making to computer graphics.

The museum coincides with the Hollywood Sci-Fi Museum and will have a permanent home in 2018.

The project goes back to 2012 when writer/fan Huston Huddleston found two Star Trek Enterprise Bridges in the trash at Paramount in 1998 and decided to restore them.

WTFilms boards Patricio Valladares’ Downhill
Exclusive: The Paris-based company has come on as co-producer and international sales agent on the Chilean director’s low-budget survival thriller.

The move strengthens WTFilms’ affiliation with cutting-edge low-budget genre after it served as co-producer on Valladares’ English-language remake of his horror film Hidden In The Woods, as well as the upcoming Terry Miles film Even Lambs Have Teeth.

WTFilms co-founder Gregory Chambet his team are developing Downhill with Valladares and Barry Keating. George Von Knorring of Chile’s Too Much Films produces and the film-makers have earmarked the Chilean locations of Termas de Chillan, Santiago and Chillan City.

Downhill follows a paralegal trapped on a mountain with a killer on a mission to murder a sick man. Valladares (pictured) describes it as “Cliffhanger meets Paranormal Activity by way of David Cronenberg’s old movies.”

Vimeo Inks Exclusive Digital Deals for 13 Films from Toronto International Film Festival
Vimeo starting next month will offer online rentals of a baker’s dozen of films that premiered at last fall’s 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.

Under the deals, Vimeo is giving each of the 13 filmmakers $10,000 up front. In return, Vimeo has an exclusive window for digital distribution — either 30 days or until Vimeo recoups the $10,000. After that, the website will provide its standard 90/10 revenue split, with 90% going to the content owners. Filmmakers have the option able to pursue traditional distribution vehicles as well as other online platforms after the exclusivity window.

Double Dutch boards Tiff duo
Double Dutch International has acquired worldwide distribution rights excluding Canada to Peter Stebbings’ addiction drama Empire Of Dirt and worldwide rights to Terry Miles’ family drama Cinemanovels. Both titles premiere in Toronto on Friday [6].

Empire Of Dirt (pictured at left) stars Tiff 2013 Rising Star Cara Gee as a former addict and single mother trying to make ends meet in Toronto. Mongrel Media holds Canadian rights.

Cinemanovels tells the story of a daughter trying to mount a film retrospective of her estranged father’s work. Apa represents Us rights.

“Both films deal with familial themes that are timely, poignant, and universal,” said Double Dutch president Jason Möring. “We are thrilled to be able to bring these stories to the domestic and international market.”

Final batch of Tiff titles were announced today and among the international hodgepodge of items trickling we find Berlin (Golden Bear winner Child’s Pose), Cannes (The Selfish Giant – Europa Cinemas Label winner and Stranger by the Lake by Alain Guiraudie), Karlovy Vary (Crystal Globe winner Le Grand Cahier ) and Locarno (Corneliu Porumboiu’s When Evening Falls on Bucharest or Metabolism) Film Fest items added to the Toronto Int. Denis Villeneuve will have two films in the festival as it emerged that Canadian Features world premiere Enemy starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a man and his doppelganger [pictured] has joined the previously announced Prisoners, also starring Gyllenhaal.

The Canadian Features selection includes Michael Dowse’s Goon follow-up The F Word, Xavier Dolan’s Tom At The Farm and Chloe Robichaud’s Sarah Prefers To Run as well as work from Jeff Barnaby, Bruce McDonald and Bruce Labruce. Also receiving its world premiere is All The Wrong Reasons featuring the final performance by the late Glee star Cory Monteith.

Festival organisers also unveiled Producers Lab Toronto participants and Telefilm Canada Pitch This! finallists, the shorts programme and participants in the tenth Tiff Talent Lab.

This afternoon, with poutine and local wine to mark the occasion, the Toronto International Film Festival announced their Canadian film selections. Programmers Steve Gravestock and Agata Smoluch Del Sorbo proudly pronounced that this year both new and seasoned filmmakers had the “curiosity and courage to show troubling issues occurring in our country in new and exciting ways.” Past festival favorite (and one of my personal own as well) Xavier Dolan, the always controversial Bruce Labruce and Jennifer Baichwal’s films garnered applause from the crowd at the majestic Royal York ballroom. Incendies” helmer Denis Villeneuve’s psychological thriller “Enemy,” based on Jose Saramago’s novel “The Double” and starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a man and his double, will world preem in the Toronto International Film Festival’s Special Presentations program next month.

The festival added 20 Canuck feature pics to the slate today (Wednesday Aug. 7, 2013), including ensemble drama “All The Wrong Reasons,” the feature-helming bow of Gia Milani, starring late Canadian thesp Cory Monteith (“Glee”) as an ambitious department store manager whose wife is coping with a family tragedy.

Special Presentations will unspool the world preems of Michael Dowse’s romantic comedy “The F Word,” starring Daniel Radcliffe, Bruce McDonald’s domestic intrigue “The Husband,” and Jennifer Baichwal and Edward Burtynsky’s 5K-hd-lensed doc “Watermark,” a global story of water use.
