Stand Off Delivers an Inconsistent Tone: A Movie Review

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Ketchup Entertainment. Director: Terry George. Writers: Thomas Gallagher and Terry George. Cast: Brendan Fraser, Colm Meaney, Martin McCann, Yaya Alafia and David O'Hara. Stand Off is an Ireland shot comedy from Oscar Award winner Terry George (Hotel Rwanda). From the promotional material, the film looks like a heist thriller. However, Stand Off is a light-hearted film that deals with family issues. The United Kingdom actors provide some realistic Irish brogue and the film has some solid dramatic moments, but the film is missing a much needed edge. The film is set in the director's hometown, Belfast, Northern Ireland. Here, a desperate man, Jimbo (Martin McCann), owes a local gangster over 5K Ir£. He only has a short window to make the money back. Or the hood, Mad Dog Flynn (David O'Hara), will take Jimbo's child. Understandably, Jimbo is motivated

[Tribeca Review] Whole Lotta Sole

There’s a whole lotta plot in the latest feature film from this year’s Oscar-winner Terry George. The Hotel Rwanda director is tackling lighter material with Whole Lotta Sole, an Irish mob hostage movie starring the ever-amiable Brendan Fraser. For such a simple conceit, subplots upon subplots abound to make this relatively well-paced and enjoyable lark strain in its third act.

Fraser plays Maguire, a U.S. resident looking to restart his life in Belfast, Ireland after his physically-abusive wife, who has Irish mob ties in Boston, might have set a hit out for him. While that plot seems like it could be a film all unto its own, it is covered within the first minute of the film. Back to Belfast, there’s a new father named Jimbo (The Pacific‘s Martin McCann), who owes crime boss Mad Dog Flynn (David O’Hara, not straying far from his

Casting Bits: Brendan Fraser in ‘Whole Lotta Sole;’ Clifton Collins, Jr. in ‘Hellbenders;’ Hayley Atwell in ‘I, Anna’
Terry George, who wrote and directed Hotel Rwanda and Reservation Road and wrote In the Name of the Father, has roped in Brendan Fraser to star in the comedy heist film Whole Lotta Sole. The film is written by Mr. George and Thomas Gallagher, and follows "a young man robbing a fish shop in order to pay off a gambling debt; the heist goes terribly -- and humorously -- awry when it turns into a hostage situation." Yep: robbing a fish shop. Brendan Fraser is not the young man; he's the shopkeeper. (But he is trying to elude his father in law, a gangster.) He can be a solid actor, when not being called upon to mug and grimace in family adventures. No idea how this one will turn out, but we'll keep a lookout for the actors chosen to play the robber and gangster father in law. [Variety [1]] After the break,

Brendan Fraser to Lead in New Comedy Whole Lotta Sole for Terry George

Brendan Fraser will star in comedic heist picture Whole Lotta Sole, for director Terry George and produced by Jay Russell.

Terry George also wrote the script with Thomas Gallagher, and the plot centers on a young man getting himself into hot water when he tries to rob a fish shop in order to pay off a gambling debt. The heist goes terribly and humorously — the shopkeeper (Fraser) has his own issues, since he’s on the run from his gangster father-in-law. And when the situation quickly gets worse into a hostage situation, that’s when the comedy cranks up. In any case, that’s the plan.

Fraser had a rough 2010 with Extraordinary Measures and Furry Vengeance. Gods and Monsters (1998) proved he can act if he wants to, so maybe we’ll get to see some of that talent again with this comedy. He will next be seen in the rom-com Crazy,

Brendan Fraser Has A Whole Lotta Sole

Brendan Fraser Has A Whole Lotta Sole
After the horror that was Furry Vengeance, you’ll forgive us for worrying that any film combining Brendan Fraser with a comedy title might not turn out all that well – once burned, as they say. Still, we don’t want to be overly judgemental, so we’ll wait and see on news that the actor has signed a deal to star in Whole Lotta Sole.Besides, the writer/director behind the comedy heist film is Terry George, who brought the world Hotel Rwanda and Reservation Road.George wrote the script with Thomas Gallagher, and the plot follows a young man getting himself into hot water when he tries to rob a fish shop in order to pay off a gambling debt. Trouble is, the shop’s manager (Fraser) has his own issues, since he’s on the run from his gangster father-in-law. And when the situation quickly deteriorates into a hostage situation,

Brendan Fraser To Star In Fish Heist Comedy Whole Lotta Sole

Last week, when Robert Luketic signed on to direct a film about a diamond robbery titled Brilliant, I remarked that heist films seem to be the new "it" thing in Hollywood. Just like whenever a new trend starts, we are likely to see a lot of great ideas a lot of middlebrow ideas, and a lot of unbeliveably bad ideas. This new one falls into the last category. Variety reports that Brendon Fraser has signed on to star in Whole Lotta Sole, a movie in which someone has the brilliant idea to rob a fish market in order to pay back gambling debts. Written by George and Thomas Gallagher and directed by Terry George, Fraser will play the shopkeeper who gets caught up in the robbery when it turns into a hostage situation. The film will be shot in Northern Ireland, though the article doesn't mention when production is slated

Casting Tidbits: Brendan Fraser, Michelle Rodriguez & Hayley Atwell

We are Sex Bob-Omb and we are here to make you think about Casting Tidbits and get sad and stuff! First up, Variety reports Brendan Fraser will star in the heist comedy Whole Lotta Sole from director Terry George (Hotel Rwanda). Thomas Gallagher also wrote the script with the director which follows a young man robbing a fish shop in order to pay off a gambling debt. But of course the heist goes terribly with humorous results and turns into a hostage situation. Fraser will portray the shopkeeper, who's on the run from his gangster father-in-law. Well, I guess anything is better than another piece of junk like Furry Vengeance hitting theaters. Second, The Playlist recently spoke with Michelle Rodriguez (Avatar) whilst she was making the press rounds promoting Battle L.A., and the actress revealed that she will star in the supernatural horror flick The ...
