Ava DuVernay Launches Diversity Initiative

On the heels of directing Jay-z’s latest music video and just in time for the release of her latest film, “A Wrinkle in Time,” director Ava DuVernay has created a diversity initiative in Hollywood for hopefuls attempting to break into the industry. The Evolve Entertainment Fund, founded by Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti, producer Dan Lin, and DuVernay, was recently launched “to give people in underserved communities a new opportunity to chase their dreams in Hollywood.” Funding has already been secured for 150 internships for “women, people of color, and those from low-income households.” By the end of 2018, that number is expected to grow to 250, with hopes that 500 positions will be made available by 2020. The Eef has partnered with some of the biggest entertainment and digital media organizations at the moment, including DreamWorks Animation, Ryan Murphy Television (which just signed a massive deal with Netflix), Film Independent, CAA, Wme, Anonymous Content,

Selma”director Ava DuVernay, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, and “The Lego Movie” producer Dan Lin have teamed up with the shared goal of giving Hollywood a much-needed makeover. Variety reports that the trio have launched the Evolve Entertainment Fund (Eef) to promote inclusion and, as Garcetti explains, “give people in underserved communities a new opportunity to chase their dreams in Hollywood — whether they want to be the next award-winning director or screenwriter, or are looking to secure a future in below-the-line jobs that are the bedrock of this city’s middle class.”

A collaboration between the City of Los Angeles, industry leaders in the media, non-profit orgs, and educational institutions, Eef is already making great strides, securing 150 paid summer internships for students participating in the Hire La’s Youth program. Ava DuVernay, Dan Lin, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti Launch Inclusion Fund
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, filmmaker Ava DuVernay, and producer Dan Lin have launched the Evolve Entertainment Fund to promote inclusion.

“When ‘Oscars So White’ and ‘Time’s Up’ put a spotlight on inequality in Hollywood, they captured the frustrations of people shut out of opportunity in what the world knows as L.A.’s signature industry,” said Garcetti. “We created the Evolve Entertainment Fund to give people in underserved communities a new opportunity to chase their dreams in Hollywood — whether they want to be the next award-winning director or screenwriter, or are looking to secure a future in below-the-line jobs that are the bedrock of this city’s middle class.”

The fund is a public-private partnership aimed at including communities that have been historically excluded from the entertainment industry. It was unveiled Monday at a news conference at Rideback Ranch — Lin’s rebranded production company — in the Filipinotown District west of downtown Los Angeles.

Parris will star as Det. Ayana Lake, a rising star in the NYPD whose keen intellect and quick, analytic mind are the keys to her success. But when she’s partnered with instinctive, intuitive Det. Jack Garrity, styles and personalities sometimes clash.

The Shape of Water and Coco win big at the PGA AwardsThe Shape of Water and Coco win big at the PGA AwardsAdriana Floridia1/22/2018 11:50:00 Am

The Producers Guild of America gave out their top film prizes this weekend. The PGA is often indicative of which movie will win Best Picture on Oscar night.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missourihas been sweeping the awards race so far this year, but it looks like the edge may be given over to The Shape of Water, which won the coveted PGA on Saturday night. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is the film's biggest competition for a Best Picture Oscar at this rate. To no-one's surprise, Coco won in the animated category and it's a surefire lock for the Animated Feature prize at the Oscars.

2018 PGA Awards: All the nominees in the 3 film and 9 TV categories for Producers Guild of America prizes

The Producers Guild of America hands out its awards on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018. That is the night before the Screen Actors Guild does the same. Unlike, the latter, which will air on TNT and TBS, the PGA ceremony is not televised. However, it is an equally important stop on the road to the Oscars.

The PGA Awards has an enviable track record at presaging the eventual Best Picture winner at the Academy Awards. The guild and the academy have agreed on 19 of the most recent 28 Best Picture champs. Last year, all nine Oscar nominees for Best Picture numbered among the 10 PGA contenders; only “Deadpool” was snubbed by the academy. The PGA prize went to “La La Land” while the Oscar was (eventually) won by “Moonlight.”

Producers Guild and Writers Guild nominations announced

Moments ago, the Producers Guild of America announced their nominees, to go along with yesterday’s nominations by the Art Directors Guild and the Writers Guild of America. Having this troika of guilds is an important moment in the awards season, especially with the flashier Golden Globe ceremony just two days away. With just the Directors Guild of America still to announce, a solid portion of the precursors that matter for the major categories have had their say, nomination wise at least. Academy Award voting is getting underway too, so this information is vital. By next week, many voters will have made their ultimate choices and submitted ballots. This trio of precursors has helped establish some films as potentially sitting pretty with Oscar. The Adg nominations basically just narrowed the field to 15 in Best Production Design, give or take a few. The WGA nominations gave I, Tonya a big boost,

2018 Producers Guild of America Awards Nominations: ‘Call Me by Your Name,’ ‘Dunkirk,’ ‘Get Out,’ and More
Nominees for the Producers Guild of America Awards have been revealed, capping off a busy award season week that has already included the Palm Springs Film Festival’s awards gala, the New York Film Critics Circle Awards, and the Art Directors and Writers Guild nominations, and the makeup and hairstyling Oscar shortlist — all leading up to Sunday’s Golden Globes.

For the first time, as the result of a tie among the 8,200 PGA voters, not 10 but 11 films will vie for the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer, including “Call Me by Your Name,” “Dunkirk,” “Get Out,” “The Post,” and “Wonder Woman.” Winning this PGA Award typically bodes well for a film’s Best Picture Oscar chances, although last year that was not the case (“La La Land” won at the PGAs, “Moonlight” prevailed at the Academy Awards).

Awards contenders “The Beguiled,” “The Florida Project,” “Logan,” “Mudbound,” “Phantom Thread,” and “The Disaster Artist” were overlooked by voters for the PGA’s Darryl F. Zanuck Award. Due to a tie in voting among the 8,200 PGA members, there are 11 nominees for the Zanuck award for the first time.

“The Shape of Water” has emerged as a front-runner during the current awards season with a leading seven nominations at Sunday’s Golden Globes, followed by “The Post” and “Three Billboards” with six each. “Three Billboards

International Newswire: Amazon, Netflix Struggle in Middle East, North Africa, Says Report
In today’s International Newswire, Amazon and Netflix struggle to make headway in Middle East and North Africa against local rivals, Juan Minujín is cast as the young Pope Francis in Fernando Meirelles’ Netflix original movie ‘The Pope,’ Studiocanal strikes box-office gold with buddy comedy ‘Marry Me, Dude,’ and Eurimages awards $503,000 to Romanian animated feature ‘The Extraordinary Voyage of Marona.’

One picture painted of the digital landscape is of a world dominated by just a few global behemoths. That has yet to happen, however, in some parts of the world. In the Middle East and North Africa, both Netflix and Amazon launched subscription video services in 2016. “Lackluster offerings mean the global giants will together comprise just 21% of the market in 2017,” says a new Ihs Markit report, A Slow Start for Mena Subscription Video, by Max Signorelli.

Put another way, the sum of 2017 year-end subscribers for Icflix, Shahid Plus and Starz Play Arabia, three of the
