International Newswire: Amazon, Netflix Struggle in Middle East, North Africa, Says Report
In today’s International Newswire, Amazon and Netflix struggle to make headway in Middle East and North Africa against local rivals, Juan Minujín is cast as the young Pope Francis in Fernando Meirelles’ Netflix original movie ‘The Pope,’ Studiocanal strikes box-office gold with buddy comedy ‘Marry Me, Dude,’ and Eurimages awards $503,000 to Romanian animated feature ‘The Extraordinary Voyage of Marona.’

One picture painted of the digital landscape is of a world dominated by just a few global behemoths. That has yet to happen, however, in some parts of the world. In the Middle East and North Africa, both Netflix and Amazon launched subscription video services in 2016. “Lackluster offerings mean the global giants will together comprise just 21% of the market in 2017,” says a new Ihs Markit report, A Slow Start for Mena Subscription Video, by Max Signorelli.

‘Chappaquiddick,’ ‘Logan’s Syndrome’ Headline Carmel Film Festival

The Carmel International Film Festival, running Oct. 18-22, may only be entering its 9th year of existence, but for co-founders Erin Clark and Tom Burns there are already enough stories about the event to go around. Of course, there was the time that the portable screen on the beach punctured during the middle of a movie.

“It was like the Wicked Witch in ‘The Wizard of Oz’ it just kind of went down,” says Clark. “And you have 350 people on the beach watching this. And we get a phone call telling us, ‘We have a problem.’ O.K., because, you can’t be everywhere at once, right?”

It goes without saying that while Clark and Burns realized it was fun in theory, in reality, the windy Pacific coast was best served for parties and special events as opposed to a temporary screening venue. Fast forward to 2017 and Carmel has grown to four indoor venues, including the 700-seat

Settlers of Catan Movie Is on the Fast-Track at Sony

Hollywood can't seem to make video game movie adaptations work. So why not try a board game instead? The project is said to be on the fast track and, assuming a first movie goes well, the studio has hopes of turning Settlers of Catan into a franchise.

Variety was the first to break the news that Sony is working on this Settlers of Catan movie. Producer Gail Katz first acquired the rights for the game in 2015 and now she is working with Sony to bring the board game to the big screen. Her previous producing credits include Pawn Sacrifice, Air Force One and The Perfect Storm. Dan Lin (It) is also on board to produce, alongside Jonathan Erlich. Here's what Katz had to
