Movie Review – The Polka King (2017)

The Polka King, 2017.

Directed by Maya Forbes and Wallace Wolodarsky.

Starring Jack Black, Jenny Slate, Jason Schwartzman, Jacki Weaver, Vanessa Bayer and J.B. Smoove.

Synopsis:

Local Pennsylvania polka legend Jan Lewan develops a plan to get rich that shocks his fans and lands him in jail.

Mere weeks after he stole the show in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Jack Black emerges with another reminder of how shrewd directors can funnel his larger-than-life presence into a truly memorable performance, this time from the polar opposite end of the filmmaking spectrum.

The Polka King, based on the scarcely believable true story of Polish-American polka magnate Jan Lewan (Black), follows Lewan’s rise from lowly pizza delivery guy to polka superstar and apparent entrepreneur in his own right, even meeting a wife (Jenny Slate) along the way. Sure, he operated a Ponzi scheme in order to amass his fortune, fleecing the elderly

Ratings: Fox's Christmas Story Live Trails All Live Musicals Before It

Ratings: Fox's Christmas Story Live Trails All Live Musicals Before It
The ratings for Fox’s A Christmas Story Live were more “lump of coal” than Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200-Shot Range Model Air Rifle.

Opening opposite the tail end of one of the biggest NFL games of the fall over on CBS, the three-hour broadcast averaged 4.5 million total viewers and a 1.5 demo rating, thereby placing last among all live TV musicals of the past four years — starting with NBC’s The Sound of Music Live (still the reigning champ with 18.6 mil/4.6) and including Fox’s own The Passion (which in March 2016 did 6.6 mil and a 1.6).

Jack Black is ‘The Polka King’ in First Trailer for Ponzi Scheme Comedy

Regardless of the quality of the final project, Jack Black and his boundless energy is often the best part of any film he’s a part of. This can be said of the upcoming Jumanji sequel as well as a film he brought to last year’s Sundance Film Festival, The Polka King. Written and directed by Maya Forbes and Wallace Wolodarsky (also responsible for Infinitely Polar Bear), the film tells the true story of Jan Lewan, famed Polish polka singer and Ponzi scheme scammer in Pennsylvania. Based out of a novelty store in Hazleton, Jan wraps himself up in the American Dream. Playing everything from weddings to county fairs and other senior citizen-heavy venues, his polka fanbase grows as he continues to expand the number of band members, much to the chagrin of friend and band clarinetist Mickey (Jason Schwartzman).

Ahead of a Netflix release in January, the first

A Christmas Story Live: The Best, Worst and Weirdest Moments From Fox's Ambitious Musical — Plus, Grade It!

A Christmas Story Live: The Best, Worst and Weirdest Moments From Fox's Ambitious Musical — Plus, Grade It!
Just when you thought A Christmas Story couldn’t become more of a small-screen holiday institution, Fox got an idea.

Ralphie Parker’s timeless tale of childhood desperation and eye-endangerment entered the pantheon of live TV musicals on Sunday with a high-concept (and overall successful) adaptation of the Tony-nominated Broadway spectacle A Christmas Story: The Musical. Based on the 1983 film of the same name, it told the story you’ve seen a million times — only with more singing and less offensive scenes at Chinese restaurants.

Powerhouse performances from Broadway and TV veterans like Jane Krakowski, Maya Rudolph, Chris Diamantopoulos,

New Girl: J.B. Smoove Set to Play Winston's Father in Final Season

New Girl: J.B. Smoove Set to Play Winston's Father in Final Season
Indulge your enthusiasm, New Girl fans: Winston’s father has been found, and he looks a lot like actor-comedian J.B. Smoove.

TVLine has learned exclusively that the Curb Your Enthusiasm vet is set to play the estranged father of Lamorne Morris’ character in the Fox comedy’s upcoming seventh and final season. Not so coincidentally, the episode featuring the anticipated father-son reunion will be directed by Morris himself.

As longtime New Girl acolytes know, Winston’s father abandoned him at an early age; Nick’s dad essentially stepped in

Jack Black as Pennsylvania's Polka King in Trailer for 'The Polka King'

"I heard that people are investing money in you." Netflix has finally unveiled the official trailer for The Polka King, a film which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this year (back in January) and will be released on Netflix just before the Sundance Film Festival next year (in early 2018). Jack Black stars as Jan Lewan, a Polish immigrant who became the "King of Pennsylvania Polka" and started a Polka Ponzi scheme. This is based on a true story and it almost seems too crazy to be real, but it is. The cast includes Jenny Slate, Jason Schwartzman, Jacki Weaver, J.B. Smoove, and Willie Garson. This reminds me of Jack Black's other good dramatic role, in Linklater's Bernie, but it's an entirely different story. I heard some solid buzz on this at Sundance, but it seems to have been forgotten until its return now. Take a look. Here's

Wild Trailer For Jack Black's The Polka King - "Witness The Greatest Scandal in Polka History!"

The first trailer has been released for Jack Black's upcoming Netflix film The Polka King. I had a chance to see this film at Sundance earlier this year and it was a wildly entertaining dark comedy! Jack Black also delivers one of the best performances of his career.

The movie is actually based on a true story that is just so insane! People can't make this shit up. Black plays a character named Jan Lewan, the beloved "Polka King" who conned an entire town with a Ponzi scheme. I loved this film and I think a lot of you will enjoy the hell out of it! Here's the synopsis:

In The Polka King, Jack Black stars as Jan Lewan, a Polish immigrant who became the “King of Pennsylvania Polka.” A believer in the American Dream, Jan worked hard and dreamed bigger, but with big dreams come big mistakes.

Robin Williams Accused of Stealing Jokes in New Book

Robin Williams Accused of Stealing Jokes in New Book
The late Robin Williams has been accused of stealing jokes back in the early days of his comedic career in a new comedy tell-all book written by the legendary Budd Friedman. Friedman founded the New York and Los Angeles Improv Comedy Clubs and has seen a lot of things in his 85 years. In addition to ratting out Robin Williams, Friedman devotes an entire chapter to the iconic and polarizing comedian, Andy Kaufman, and dishes on managing Bette Midler as well as witnessing Johnny Carson getting wasted and making out with an 18-year old girl in the backseat of a car.

Many comedians have been accused of joke stealing, but as it turns out, Robin Williams was reportedly notorious for it back when he was for starting out. The Hollywood Reporter spoke to Budd Friedman about his book and the author revealed that Richard Lewis and Robert Wuhl both accuse Williams

‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’: Larry David Invented Hot Takes, and He Isn’t Looking For Yours
After six years off the air, Larry David and his beloved HBO series “Curb Your Enthusiasm” return to a world that is, well, a lot more like Larry David and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” Just as the “Curb” Larry is known for his unsolicited, and often unwelcome opinions, we now live in a social media age awash with too many hot takes.

Can the cringe comedy maintain its gleefully malcontent attitude in a culture where everyone has their own awkward, awful opinion? The TV version of “Larry David” is the king of offensive behavior, typically meted out by his own hand, waged against a world that just doesn’t understand him. “Curb” did it first, and no matter your take, it’s not going to change.

“In terms of the current culture, I can confidently speak for Larry, when I say that he has never once taken the audience’s wants,
