‘Blade Runner 2049,’ ‘Logan,’ and More: the Genre-Benders That Are Major Oscar Contenders

‘Blade Runner 2049,’ ‘Logan,’ and More: the Genre-Benders That Are Major Oscar Contenders
Every year, the studios take their best genre successes and try to push them beyond the technical ghetto. Oscar campaigners want to convince critics, guilds, and Oscar voters that their movie rises to the level of art. But it’s rare for fantasy, horror, thriller, action or comic-book movies to pass over to the Best Picture side.

When they do, it tends to be an exception like Peter Jackson’s fantasy “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. All three films scored Best Picture nominations and technical wins: “Fellowship” scored 13 nominations and wins for Makeup, Visual Effects, and Cinematography; “The Two Towers” earned six and won Sound Editing and VFX; and then came the ultimate triumph for the finale “The Return of the King”: a grand sweep of all 11 nominations including Best Picture. But while “Lotr” fell into the fantasy genre, it was boosted by the literary pedigree of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Taylor Swift Made Dinner for Tiffany Haddish and the Comedian Says She 'Can Cook!'
Tiffany Haddish might be the newest addition to Taylor Swift's squad.

On Monday's episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the Girls Trip star talks about how her guest hosting gig on Saturday Night Live led to her being asked to a potluck dinner by Swift, who was the musical guest of the evening.

The 38-year-old comedian recalls telling the 27-year-old singer, "I said, 'Look, if I come over you got to make me some BBQ chicken, some potato salad and a brisket.' And she was like, 'Ok,' and I was like, 'I'm gonna bring over some collard greens 'cause I got my own garden.'"

Haddish brought over her "joyful greens" and was pleased with what Swift had prepared. "First off, Taylor can cook," she exclaims. "The chicken was bomb! And she made cornbread, bomb! So good."

The breakout star says Swift was also impressed with her dish.

If you happen to catch “Kong: Skull Island” on HBO or stream it on HBO Go, you may notice something very distracting taking place: The aspect ratio changes to a letterbox format at various times throughout the movie. Sometimes the changes occur within edits in a single scene or set piece, resulting in a very unusual viewing experience. It turns out HBO is airing the airplane edit for “Kong: Skull Island” instead of the theatrical cut.

The Predator Test Screening Reactions: Is It Good or Bad?

The Predator Test Screening Reactions: Is It Good or Bad?
It sounds like the first reactions to Shane Black's The Predator are in and they're incredibly divided. Fox reportedly starting holding test screenings of the highly-anticipated movie last week and, though people who get into these test screenings generally have to sign some form of non-disclosure agreement, some reactions have leaked online. Some fans reportedly love the new, very comedic take on the franchise, while others absolutely hate it and warn to "avoid it at all costs."

The reactions come to us via YouTuber Mr. H, who has been covering The Predator pretty closely. He's reportedly managed to dig up some reactions from those who attended one of the test screenings and there doesn't seem to be a lot of middle ground. Those who saw the movie either love Shane Black's very different approach, or they really hated it. Looks like we could have a divisive movie on our hands,

'Justice League' is Coming Together for $110+ Million Opening While 'Wonder' Looks to Surprise
This weekend Marvel's latest hit Thor: Ragnarok is looking to top $250 million after 17 days in release while Warner Bros. and DC Comics unveil their latest entry into the DC Extended Universe, Justice League looking to make a splash globally, though that's not all this weekend has to offer. Lionsgate will debut the highly anticipated adaptation Wonder while Sony is debuting their faith-based animated title The Star. All-in-all we should be looking at a strong weekend in which the top twelve should combine for over $200 million for the first time since early July. Looking at a #1 finish, Warner Bros. and DC Comics' Justice League will debut in 4,051 theaters with industry expectations right around $105-115 million. Given Wonder Woman debuted with $103.2 million earlier this year, Suicide Squad opened with $133.6 million last year and Batman v Superman opened with $166 million, those expectations might seem low given this is essentially DC's equivalent to Marvel's The Avengers.
